I've been to London, New York, Paris etc ... but none have come close to Dublin. Sure they've more skyscrapers, more high speed transport and more hotels, but Dublin stands its ground. Its population and economy are growing fast, it has modernised so much since the 1990s. It has become the silicon valley of Europe. A technological economy with a great arts culture and sublime nightlife. Dublin represents everything a major city should, multi-cultured, modern, fast moving yet still friendly and laid back enough to let you live! I'm very happy to call myself Irish and a student of TCD Dublin.

As a tour guide in the city I beg to differ. They come for the pubs, museums, art galleries, to see where Oscar Wilde was born, to see the city Joyce wrote Dubliners about, to hear about the Easter Rising, to visit the graves of Irish patriots in Glasnevin Cemetery and Arbour Hill. They come for trad music, irish dancing, the craic, the city parks, theatre and what makes us unique in the world.

Tourists come to Dublin as the capital of Ireland. They make a beeline for the Guinness Storehouse - which is owned by Diageo a British company. Their next port of call is Temple Bar which is about as Irish as tequila. The point of this film is that the residents of any city make the city. It is a view of the city from the inside - not the outside so I that case tourists are actually irrelevant to the story anyway

That's brilliant but as a tour guide you will also know that The Guinness Storehouse is one of Ireland's top tourist destinations. This is a well documented fact. You have still missed the point of the film which is not talking about tourists but rather residents of the city.
@Ciaradexy11 жыл бұрын
You can call me whatever you want but as a tour guide in Dublin and Connemara, I can assure you that tourists come here for the 'Dublin-isms' and many American tourists and British tourists who have been coming here for over 20 years wont be coming back due to the fact their are so many migrants here which takes away from the unique culture and atmosphere of the city. We are now becoming just like most other cities in Europe which are losing their uniqueness and what makes them special.

You may have a point in relation to certain aspects of the hospitality industry but if tourists / anyone is coming here expecting to find Paddyland they will be sorely disappointed. I for one don't wish to be reduced to a stereotype to boost tourism. If they can't appreciate the scenery and genuine culture that exists here they should probably wise up a bit before their next holiday

@stoney71459 жыл бұрын
+Jason McCoy People from rural ireland have a hard time considering dublin irish even before immigrants started coming.This video is about new comers to ireland so it gives a false impression.However 25% of dublin would be immigrants.Its our only big city for example our second city is cork with around 120 000 and other cities are about the same. such as limerick or galway so dublin with 1.2million is the biggest commercial hub of the country .probably at least a third of the people of dublin are from rural areas are non national,because most of the jobs are in dublin.

Jason McCoy Galway limerick and other western counties usually have the most emmigration.So people of irish descent there ancestors will have descended mostly from the western part of ireland or the bulk of them
@gloin108 жыл бұрын
+Jason McCoy Currently, about 20% of the Irish population is foreign born. The locals have dealt with this mostly by marrying them. There are plenty of "...feckin irish people left in dublin", and they speak with Irish/Dublin accents. The fact that they might have a slightly darker skin tone is neither here nor there. One of our best Gaelic football players is half Fijian, for your information.....

What has the video you've just watched got to do with tourists? You can put the tour guide card away it's irrelevant. Maybe you didn't watch the video through, the German lady in the video commented on the fact that Dublin had changed this was inevitable.Our culture is not being eroded by foreigners, rather changing. Do most kids under 18 speak like Americans because of migrants? Doubtful. Popular culture is responsible there.

It does exist. You just have to look past all the new ugly construction and the noise, and crowds, and the junk that is for sale, and when you look hard enough, at the quiet special places and the gentle, sweet, kind, loving, funny people-the real Dubliners, that made Dublin the city that I love so much, there it is.

This history of Dublin is a history of foreigners coming to Dublin and becoming Dubliners.
@papadoc7117 жыл бұрын
lol foreigners built the city you moron.
@papadoc7117 жыл бұрын
Yes it was called Duiblinn, built some time around the 9 -10th century, however I am sorry to say, as an Irishmen, the city was built by Norsemen and later by their descendants the Normans. However I never said they founded the city Dublin, I said they built Dublin, I'm not wrong in stating that. However yes the Norse integrated well into Gaelic culture, just like many of they're Norman descendants, the Fitzgerald's, De Burgh's, D'Arcy, De Clare etc These kind of foreigners do contributed heavily to our society, its not like they're working in Asda or Lidl, these are professionals and students.
@papadoc7117 жыл бұрын
"Also it's not really fair to say it was 'built by foreigners' because most irish people have norse and norman ancestry, so our ancestors built it anyway.... My surname is a norman one beginning with Fitz for example." The Clans of the Northern Ui Niall claimed important victories over the Vikings which left Ulster with little to no Norse imprint compared to the rest of Ireland. My family the Doherty's for example have no Norse ancestry, my family share a common ancestor linked with Niall of the Nine Hostages, lol so yes I think (I'm) fair in saying it was built by foreigners. However I wouldn't argue With the Norse Geal argument you proposed, the Kingdom of Dublin was built by Norse Gaels, Gaels with names like Ivan, Imar, Óisle (king of the foreigners) Sigtrygg II Silkbeard Olafsson, the same Norseman who fought at the infamous battle of Clontarf against the King of Munster Brian Boru.
