We are Matariki (pt 4)
As I pay homage to one of the guiding principles of Matariki:
‘Remembrance- honouring those who have died since the last rising of Matariki’
I honour my beloved Mother, Georgina Ormsby…who passed away Nov 14th 2023, shattering my heart.
In saying this, I think of Mum and her life, which was a life of unselfish service to family, friends, fur babies and loved ones. Grounded and guided by her unwavering faith in God, this was a template for how she governed her actions and carried herself.
Cloaked in impeccable style and grace, Mum was cut from the cloth of old-school manners, respect for Elders, tradition and a deep love for those who have come before her.
She taught me to mind my manners, how to cook, how to keep a clean home, how to be independent, how to look after animals, how to plant and tend, to always keep my mind active and engaged in learning by reading, it is why I use a lot of books in my imagery. Most importantly, she taught me the importance of prayer, I loved when Mum would pray, a stillness and a reverence always entered the room.
In closing, I could probably write a book on the life lessons that Mum taught me, some of which she learnt from my Grandmother and from all of our Nannies before her.
‘Georgina Ormsby’, a woman small in stature, she was and continues to be mighty in Spirit, fearless, funny, and generous. The longing sits within me, but I know I will be with Mum, Dad and our Tupuna one day.
