In this episode, we review one coin shop in Virginia named Cameo Coins & Collectibles.
The Coin Shop service by Chip(Owners Son) was demeaning and accusatory. He told us we look like we were going to "case" the place(plan to steal/break into their establishment).
When he figured out we were dealers he didn't want to sell us very many coins. Just not somewhere we want to visit again.

AS a business owner for 25 years now. You will NEVER please everyone you run across, no matter how well you treat them. Also, some are NOT worth dealing with at all, no matter what deals they have. The best you can do with some is just Smile, say Thank you and just WALK away.... There is ALWAYS something bigger and better down the road.

That's a great point SP. Have to work with like-minded people to achieve a goal bigger then yourself. And sometimes avoid dealers who just aren't seeing the same big picture.

There 4 coin shops I have access to, 1 shop only wants to deal with big collectors. I never went back to that shop again

The first rule of coin shops. What you have to sell is never valuable. The second rule of coin shops. Everything they bought suddenly becomes very valuable. As soon as they buy it.

I live in the DC area and have been to that shop. The most I have bought from them was some Dansco albums and silver from their reject bin - that all went fine. I didn’t think the collector coins on offer and their prices was great. For an area with a lot of people and money, the DC area really doesn’t have good coin shops IMO. Beyond that, I don’t know why the coin business, compared to most other businesses, has lots of people that just treat customers like crap. Bizarre business model.

I completely feel uncomfortable in many coin shops. I know the jewelry business a little better than numismatics, and I see the exact same comments I did 30 years ago with that business. Territorial, don't want to change, hate e-commerce, customer unfriendly, living off generational business or taking advantage of those who want are unaware. The result? Small shops are closing or eaten by the conglomerates like Sterling. Consumers who refuse to be mistreated shop online then go to large corporate stores that have uniform policies. The same thing with hardware stores, rare book shops, you name it. The cranky folks you describe in numismatics are ticking down to being eliminated in a generation while reputable auction houses will get more of the business leaving fewer coins for these small shops to scrap over. The world is changing, and people want to be treated fairly without emotional drama or prejudicial treatment. I am so glad Acousha takes the high road. I'm pleased and proud to purchase from you. I am very pleased the internet has made it an even playing field for dealers who want to sell coins without a store front. The days of bad customer service I pray comes to and end. I walked into a sausage store where the owner was surrounded by his product and there was plenty also hanging up. He looked at me and said, "Isn't it amazing? Every single piece of this sausage is sold." I simply replied, "Congratulations." And left. My time was too valuable for this sort of thing. Sorry about your rough experience in "The Old Dominion." As someone that has been collecting coins for many decades I have thankfully never ran into a coinshop like the one you are describing. There have been some coin dealers that have had attitudes right from the start ,but I see that as a one off or this person is having personal problems. I walk right out and tell them look for my review. They do not care about that either. Everything is personality and some should not even be in this business.

I wouldn't spent a dime there! There are too many good dealers to go to. I once walked out of a shop after waiting 15 minutes just to be recognized. They weren't even busy. My money is just as good to the friendly guys. Keep up the great videos Drew & Casey.

Another general observation I have noted at local coin shops is that 95% of everything on display are pretty generic coins or bullion. They are usually in the back of the store working on online auctions of the good stuff. I don’t always walk into a CS with a specific coin in mind and if I see something interesting or different I’ll buy it. I get the what are you looking for question after scouring 100 low grade common Morgans on display. Maybe if they had that 1865 Proof Seated on display instead I would buy it. You always buy a nice variety of coins and review online which I appreciate!

Bingo! That is exactly me and my father. We collect what we like. Not always searching for anything specific. That is the same question we always get in a shops or at local coin shows. Sometimes one of us might buy a graded and sometimes a raw one...if we feel comfortable the coin will straight grade. No rhyme or reason to what we collect. Depends on the coin, condition/look, and price.

I remember being at a coin show about 10 years ago and getting attitude from a dealer about a coin I was interested in. He acted like he was doing me a favor offering it to me. I simply put the coin down and said "thank you for your time" and started to move away from his table. Now, take a moment. A dealer is giving out attitude in a room full of dealers! How dumb is that. He said, "Aren't you going to buy something?". I said, "No sir, not from you. Ever. " and walked away. He said to my back, 'You can't please some people." LOL He never understood that HE was the problem. I must say the majority of dealers I come across are nice and helpful. Sorry this happened to you. Places like that are on their way out .

I really appreciate your input on Cameo Coins and Collectibles in Virginia. I won't buy from them. I don't think you deserved to be treated that way. Common courtesy should always be extended dealer or collector. I give you credit for coming forward and mentioning this. Great job!

I stopped going to coins shops early in my career. Found Dave McHenry of AZ Coin Exchange who buys all the wholesale stuff with stone prices and buys it all. Been doing business with him for 20 years. The few coin shows I went to felt more like going for a swim in a pool of sharks. If you weren't an idiot looking to give your coins away they didn't want to talk to you. Den of thrives comes to mind. For five years I ran ads in classifieds in 20 to 30 cities at a time. All with a local voyage number so people didn't know I was from out of state. Did house and bank calls and could find all I needed to buy and sell for a decent living. In 2008 started doing hotel buys. Hired, trained, and managed buyers who did buy event all over the country. Again finding more to buy then you can imagine. Two decades later I'm teaching my four children how to run the business as I prepare to meet my maker. Ten months in a 12 month prognosis. Doing events starting on 22nd in CA. Good times.

8 out of 10 coin shops I go into are very similar to your experience. I like to see coins I purchase personally, but have moved onto buying at Heritage the bulk of my coins due to this type of treatment. It seems like most coin dealers have been beaten up of the years that they presume you guilty when you walk in the door. I have never got into an argument with these people, I stay pleasant but never go back…

That is why I don,t buy from the local coin dealers in los angeles . I had two different dealers accuse me of stealing the coins I wanted to sell . One of them insisted I was one of the people that tried to break into his store a week prior . I own my own business and am able to buy and sell the metals as I see fit . I will just continue to purchase online .

That's crazy to hear! I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and I go to several coin shops and Ben the Coingeek on occasion and never had such an encounter. They're always so friendly and willing to chat about a number of things and never once did I feel mistreated, which means either I'm lucky, or haven't caught them on a bad day yet.

Coin shops are the worst people on earth. The most unfriendly folks in the world.This happens to me at shops and shows. It's like they don't care if you buy anything or not. If I was a shop owner I would sell you the whole case of coins if you wanted them. Owners need to be friendly to customers. I no how you feel I've felt this for years.

I run into situations like this in guitar shops as well. "Can I check out this guitar?" "Are you going to buy it?" "I don't know until I try it" "Well you can't try it if you aren't going to buy it" "If I wanted to buy it without trying it out first then I would just order it online, which is what I'm going to do now" And we act perplexed as to why there aren't any brick and mortar stores anymore.

I know of one store that sold junk silver but if the price of silver or gold dropped 1% he'd close up, no matter the time....or advertise one price then you'd ay to the get informed the coi s would be there in two to three weeks...I'm not a fan of those bait n switch or only open when they are taking your money...no downsides for them.

I have a lcs ran by a absolute ahole he refuses to communicate I walk on egg shells while in the store. I've never met such odd customer service.

Local dealer I tried was buying silver eagles for $2 UNDER spot. He was really on the grift. I smiled to myself and so I toyed with him a bit before I left and was glad I left.

Drew: That is one crazy ass experience. Do you think the dealer was prejudiced against you because you were Texan, or was he just being a jerk? Regardless, that 1916-D is a real nice coin. I just picked up a nice clean (not as in "cleaned") AG03 for $800 after tax. If I had more money to spend, I would definitely try to get that VG08 from you. Thanks for a very educational video! I've often learned that it can be a sad reflection of our world that being a "good honest person" or respectful customer is "so abnormal" or "sketchy". At the end of the day though you just have to be yourself and let that personal example be the first. You never know the impact of your actions on others sometimes too

I have a shop similar where I live called, "West Edmonton coin and stamp" They are in the largest mall in Canada which attracts a lot of tourists. If youask for 5% off or mention thier own web site the guy loses it, beyond making any sense. he doesn't want locals to buy from him, he only wants to rip off tourists

I lived in that area, I avoided DC, Arlington, and Fairfax CS for that very reason due to business costs and the money in that area. There’s a CS in that area that will literally ignore you in store but concentrates on online sales only lol. Didn’t buy anything and left.

Been thru that before. Was out with my father doing an errand in Wall Twp, NJ which was not local for us. We came across a coin shop on Rt 35 and stopped to see what they had. The owner was rude and unprofessional from the second we walked thru the door and asked what graded coins he had. He literally told us go and search Ebay. There were no other customers in the store that we were keeping him from. Just a horrible experience and way to run a business. I always tell others to avoid that place when they ask me about coin shops.

Ive had some very uncomfortable stiuations in coin shops. Some days id show up and all the staff at one shop in particular would act nervous or something. Well id basically buy like half their inventory but after that they wouldnt sell me anything anymore. They would say things like " i cant sell that one" and Im like umm well its in your showcase with a pricetag on it right?? That happened several times at the same spot. Eventually, they acted like they didnt want me coming there anymore and Im like wtf Im your best customer why on earth would they not want me to come there?? I couldnt figure it out..I just stopped going there. It was a pos shop anyway. I thought I was helping them but I guess I was wrong.

Sorry that Northern VA treated you like that. I personally haven't been to coin shops in those area myself. I live in the Hampton Roads Area of VA. I'd say where I'm at I am blessed to have lots of coin shops down here that are really nice. Everyone has their good and bad days, and it seems someone rained on his parade before y'all walked in.

Thanks for Sharing. I occasionally travel for business and like to drop in to some LCS’s so it’s good to know where not to waist your time. I do like checking reviews. If ever in the Toledo, OH area stop in at “Toledo Coin Exchange”! I Highly recommend them! They are some of the nicest and hospitable LCS Folks I have ever met. When they found out I was from Houston they were quick to small talk and chat. They offered me a bottle water. They even let me change in their Restroom out of my suit in to something more comfortable before catching my flight. Anytime I’m in Toledo I will surely drop in to revisit them.

There's a LOT of men in the coin business who are high in disagreeableness. That's VERY evident. Add to that that we're dealing in MONEY (with a disagreeable person!) and the "buy low, sell high" business model (with disagreeable people), and the results speak for themselves. I go to coin shows and there's dealers who face away from the table so they don't have to "deal with" their customers. Instead, the guy has an underling who deals with customers. When a customer has a question, the underling then turns around and whispers customer inquiries in the dealer's ear. The answer you see him give is often an irritated shake of the head or a pained facial expression, like "oh, God, I gotta deal with this sh_t again!!??" My question: WHY do these people stay in this business if it's such a pain in the ass to them?

Wow, that shop is right in my neighborhood!! Of all the coin shops in the entire country, you happen to stop at a coin shop that is just a couple of miles from my house. I have gone in there a number of times. My impression is that they make all their money by buying and selling gold and silver. They have one display case for collectible coins, mostly Morgan dollars, that never changes. They’re just fine if you want to buy or sell gold or silver but I don’t consider them dealers in rare coins. The shop is located in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the entire country and the locals come in all the time as a precious metals exchange. Someone from out of state looking for actual collectible rare coins was probably actually a shock to them! Nonetheless, there’s no excuse for lack of courtesy and civility. Basically the same with the other store you mention, this is just down the road a bit. Very eager to buy or sell AGE’s, but useless for a serious coin collector.

This is weird for me to hear. I see what your business model is. You have money that you work honestly to obtain. You jump through hoops to buy coins to grade and then maybe send to CAC. Your methods are all legitimate. You try to learn from every CAC submission. You guys are solid even though I think CAC gives you a load of BS when they reject your coins. Tommy Lasorda once said about Curt Bevacqua (a lousy .236 hitter for the Padres), I will send that guy a cab to get him to the ballpark. If I was a coin dealer and you were stuck at the hotel in my city; I would send a driver to get you to my shop. I know you guys are serious coin buyers if something is priced right for you to buy.

drew since you've been around the coin show circuit and or know dealers like Jeff Garrett or others that the dealers may have done dealing with in the past to defuse the whole situation call or text dealer friends asking if they know the owners of the said coin dealership if you get a yes answer back, call the dealer friend when leaving the shop explain to them what's going on,and wait until you hear the dealers phone ring and watch there demeanor change when you've been verified legit vs a threat. I'm only saying this because the same thing has happened to me but the dealers that did it, got a phone call from my current boss in a not so happy tone.

I had an experience about 40 years ago where I went into a coin shop and was looking around and was literally kicked out of the shop. I got the feeling they were mafia types; I rode in on a motorcycle and had longer hair at the time, I think they judged me just on appearance. The people you were dealing with may have passed some false judgement on you, the best way is not to give them any business.

Not sure you will see this as it is an old video. I owned a store and beyond the security I had a policy that I did not wholesale unless it was an appointment. If I wanted to wholesale stuff I could not sell in the store then I would do it at a show or coinnet. Reason was that most dealers would not be as upfront as you and they would want to see every coin I owned and take the day up. Never take it personal.

That’s too bad you had that experience. How weird. What would it matter if you were buying all their coins, isn’t that the point when you have them out on display? To sell them? I couldn’t imagine walking into a LCS looking in the display case and have them say, “Sorry that’s not for sale”. Sounds like an awful shop.

Everyones egger and willing to make a deal or even explain something. That story sad to hard to hear why would someone turn down no only a customer but a young person in the hobby. o well keep up the good work i doubt youll run into many more people like that.

some of these dealers are just like their stuff is the only thing around... A couple of years back i was at one of the F.U.N. shows and aske a dealer f i could look at one of his morgan's.. He told me" Oh this one is really expensive" so i said oh well then maybe i shouldnt.. then i went to the table next to him and preceded to pic up $6500 worth of coins and i said when i was tallying up i said "Oh that wasnt so expensive" all the while the guy was looking a me.... i just smiled and moved on.

Some dealers are just arrogant pricks and you can't do business with them. If someone treated me that way, I would simply say "look, I'm looking spend $x,xxx-$xx,xxx, I have cash and I work on slim margins. If I can build a stack and get x% to xx% off, that'd be great, if not, I'll just leave. Since you're already there, you still want to salvage the visit for expenses, but make it clear that you're not going to take their shit.

PS, Drew, I'm sorry for your experience here! And if this happens to you,it will happen to anyone! Again thanks for the heads up about this place because I do a lot of purchasing on eBay and if this dealer sells there, I will NOT buy anything from them! I do business with only certain people who are selling and I don't like an attitude from them! I believe you experience was as bad as you mentioned and frankly, Myself, I wouldn't buy anything from them if they were the last ones on earth!

Sorry you had this strange experience. I could understand some anger if you were handing out business cards and soliciting other customers - but you were trying to buy inventory! that area of VA is high dollar and can get high crime...I am pretty sure most the shops in that area will give you the same kind of attitude...plus he may have owed money and was waiting on the mafia to collect their weekly VIG...:)

Sounds like you made him uncomfortable right away, for a reason that probably just floated away from your conscious and now you don't even know why. I doubt he'd be like that on a regular basis or he wouldn't even still be there. You never know what someone else is going through. It's not your place to know, it's your place to just acknowledge that you don't know! They might have been robbed the day before you got there. It could be anything. I wonder if your camera had anything to do. Also, it's a big mistake to go into a coin shop and expect that everything you see there to be for sale. If you gave me pressure to sell you something that wasn't for sale I'd be half way to asking you to leave. For instance, nothing on the wall is for sale. If you gave me attitude because you wanted to buy something on the wall? That's not how it works brah. If I have a bad first impression, I put aside politics, asserting my opinion or focusing blame on whose fault it was, I've learned that being sweeter and most importantly respectful will always improve the situation. "Kill them with kindness" brother and I promise you, you'll have better outcomes for the rest of your life.

I respect your opinion. I was telling them upfront what I wanted to see and what they could price it at. They did because it all was available. Everything was for sale, just not to me. Wasn’t going in there like I owned the place. Was being very reserved and polite(how we treat everyone we meet). They basically said they wanted to sell different coins to collectors and different coins to me. Hey, if that’s the case then just say it politely and make people feel welcomed. That wasn’t the case sadly. Was pretty stand offish and wouldn’t help them grow as a business from my opinion. I understand people go through things in life, but it doesn’t give you an excuse to treat others poorly or differently then your other customers. We might of been having a bad day or week, but my goal is to never make someone else feel bad about themselves. The reviews I presume are from local collectors who enjoy the service. That’s wonderful and I hope the business does well. We just had a poor experience and don’t want others to feel the same as us. I just think they could do a better job and providing a bedside manor for dealers who come by and want to pick up a few items.

Sounds to me that he was annoyed and probably thought he could get more for those coins even if it takes him longer. Some shops I know will overpay for a few anchor coins that not only keep their shop interesting, but allows him to offer those rarities to his locals. Some shops have a hard time building up and keeping a good solid inventory of investment grade collector 🪙.

I could only imagine he would fear a local he hasn't seen in a while comes in and is looking to buy and has nothing of interest which could very much disappoint that local. I do agree that could have been relayed better, but not everybody is for everyone unfortunately. Cool 🪙's.
