The "Because you're a jinx!" scene is the show's biggest "Never rewatch" moment for me. It's so painfully obvious Vi didn't mean to call her that, that she instantly regretted hitting her and only left so she could cool off and process the situation more calmly. Goddamn, this show is too good.

Some folks give Vi a lot of sh* about this, but... here's a girl whose parents were murdered by state thugs trying to advocate for a better life. Her entire existence is a semi-supported street kid in slums, violence around her on every side. Plus, again... she's a KID. She has absolutely no foundation for kind, gentle, calm reactions and behavior. What she did was very horrible, very human. Just want to hug them both.

But I do think there are a lot of people who are (protective) older siblings and have been in a situation where they wanted to separate themselves from their younger sibling to take a breather but didn't do so for various reasons (even as kids). They'll look at this and feel kind of disgusted as an older sibling themselves that Vi left Powder alone, while they know and/or feel they themselves wouldn't have done so. So I do think it holds up that they get annoyed at Vi walking away from Powder in a situation where she shouldn't have left Powder alone even if only for a minute. And also Vi has been shown to be rather "fist first, thinking later" kind of girl. Which in turn will but heads with people who aren't at all like that and are and always have been the type to stay calm and deal with anger and sadness later when you have the time to. Afterall people react differently to stress, even at young ages. Some people become unnaturally calm and collected in stressful situations, but break down when the stress is gone/down. So all in all I can see why some people really don't like how Vi handled that situation. I also don't like Vi, but I do think she is a good character for the story.

I have two younger siblings and just couldn't stomach the idea of leaving them in a situation like this that had them vulnerable. I was frustrated when I saw Vi walking away, but understood what immense and complex emotions she was under. Such brilliant writing and acting in this scene, in this episode.

I'm pretty sure on one of the interviews I've seen, they said her voice acting was given as an example to other voice actors on the show for the level of quality they wanted - I fell like every one of them delivered their best.

Good to see you understand why Vi acts as she did. People forget that not only is she still child herself, she's just seen 3 people she cared for killed just as they were all about to escape. And even then, she still recognises she just needs a moment to compose herself, and as soon as she sees powder is in danger she immediately trys to run back to her.

@BrunoSilva1995 Blaming powder is fair enough, no? If she had done as she was told then it's very likely that Vi's rescue mission would have succeeded. Instead, through Powders actions, it is all for naught. Vi literally fought for her life, only for her sister to come and kill everyone. To not understand why Vi, who is only a few years older than Powder, might temporarily lash out is a bit much to be honest. And she realsies she needs a moment to collect herself, before immediately trying to go back at the first sign of trouble.

@@gustavgustav2670 you could say the same for Vi that whole situation wouldn't have happened if Vi did what Vander told her, to not go to the Upside yet she went, and she knew Powder has a hard time with her confidence, so naturally she would want to help rescue their "father" to prove her worth cuz she always being put down, Vi simply showed she agree'd with what Milo said in the end of the day by telling her she would just be in the way Powder is no saint but it's easier to understand her actions having in account the mental breakdown she was having prior to that event but this is just my opinion

@@BrunoSilva1995 I think you missed gusta's point. It doesn't matter what you or I think about if what Vi did was right. He's pointing out that what Vi did made sense for someone who was exhausted, almost killed from an explosion, and witnessed (basically) her brothers and father violently die. Then learning that her sister was technically the cause of it and got super emotional from revelation overload and lashed out. She realized what she did wrong and did what a normal person would do after a major revelation like that, remove yourself from the situation and calm down. Yes, we could play the blame game and say that if Vander didn't try to drown Silco or if he didn't take in Vi and Powder as daughters then this wouldn't have happened. But, the main point is that it was a horribly messy situation where it's perfectly understandable why Vi and Powder made the mistakes that they did and it's hard to be mad at them for making reasonable emotional mistakes.

I'm not sure if you noticed this, but just didn't comment on it: Silco looked ready to kill Powder (holding a knife still dripping the blood of her foster father - doesn't sheath it, just hides it from her) he wasn't thinking of taking her in - he just wanted to know where Vi was. But then she surprised him by leaping on him in a hug (he disarmed both emotionally, and physically - the knife skitters away). When She says "She left me" his gaze falls onto Vander's body - the "brother" who betrayed and abandoned him. He thinks she's a kindred spirit - someone who he thinks he is uniquely able to understand, and her him. When I first watched Arcane, I loved ever moment up to this point, and then realised it was even more well written than I thought.

I actually like how much this episode parallels what’s happening with Jayce & Viktor to what’s happening with the undercity kids. They both have those magical crystals, but the utilization of them are greatly affected by the access to knowledge and equipment necessary to make them work. Privilege and access. The crystal bringing both magical progress and destruction at the same time. But it also shows that luck is also such a player in the situations because Viktor & Jayce didn’t start off their lives in privilege. It’s such a well written show. Also yes! The writers do such a good job of showing all the sides. It’s just such a Human show.

One of the things that makes this episode so incredibly heartbreaking is the fact that if Powder had stayed home and done nothing...everyone would have very likely lived and escaped. I really apprecaite that this show took that extra beat to show that the good guys had the situation under control and were about to all escape. A lesser show would have left it ambigious and left it up to interpretation if Powder was helping them or not. It just adds an extra layer of tragedy to everything. This show is a masterpiece.

I'm so glad you guys actually understood that Powder was unstable before her and Vi fought. Everyone just glazes over that in the conversation about Powder's reaction and trajectory. It always blew me away that she was looking at Vander's body, evidence of the rest of the family being dead and her biggest reaction was over the fact that Vi had left her. She was never ok and yes, she is weak. She spent so much time expecting all of her validation from Vi that the second Vi says no, she breaks

But that's a far away thought when people don't know LoL and the characters so I don't mind if they don't notice that. But so many people just glaze over her break down in episode 3 like it's reasonable for her to be more upset that she's been asked to stay behind then about their uncle figure being dead and their father figure being missing and also likely dead.

What's great is there are hints both to Powder's vulnerability and Vi's impatience. Or maybe that's projecting, but I feel like the way Vi says "it's ok" is so totally the way I'd say it to someone that's screwed up but who I don't have the emotional subtlety to talk to them without hurting them.

As hard as it is to watch the last moment between the sisters, Vi's reaction is understandable, we may not like it but it's totally understandable. She just witnessed her whole family died and all that frustration and anger got her in a moment. Vi regrets her actions immediately and removes herself from powder to cool down so she wouldn't do more damage. And she tries to run back to her sister immediately as soon as she sees her in danger. Feel bad for both sisters none of them is to blame for what happened.

I think my favorite moment of this episode (and of the series) is right at the end of this episode where the song begins, and the camera backs away from Powder and Silco. The camera slowly fades and spins while gently becoming fuzzy. The camera is from Vi's perspective as she is getting pulled away into the sewer after being "Chloroformed" and slowly passing out and losing her vision. It's a cinematic masterpiece.

First off, as the biggest Powder-apologist in myself, I appreciate that you say you can't blame it all on her. I don't blame you for calling her weak, as she is a young girl that is not only dealing with the immediate trauma of what her sister is saying is all her doing, but the PTSD of losing her parents at a very young age (not to mention the constant pressure from Vi to do things she can't and Milo always in her ear making sure she knows she can't). She naturally has abandonment issues and relied on Vi more than we could have ever known. I think this is the perfect place to bring up that Arcane does a VERY good job at addressing mental health, be it PTSD or other conditions. Powder is by far my favourite character in Arcane, but Vi is also dealing with a lot of the same struggles (though I admit, I was SUPER angry at her when I first watched this episode XD). This episode is definitely a bit of a crossroads, but there is still so much more to come!! :)

None of us were ready for this. It was a moment that essentially said to us that we couldn't rely on our normal expectations about how stories go. The line that really hits differently for me is where Vander is asking him why he's doing this, and all he can see is pride as the reason. When Silco hits back so passionately saying, "For respect!" it... is something that I've come to understand on a rather deep level. As someone who has for several years, within their own household, systematically been stripped of respect for my feelings about what is important or how things should go, I can tell you... it 100% earns its place on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If you are forced to live without it, it will destroy you on a mental level as sure as anything. Also, let's... never overlook the fact that Powder was 100% ready to chuck around things like grenades in the first two episodes. Mouser was going to be a nail bomb in that first kid's face until it fizzled, and she was making more nail bombs when they were getting ready to go toe-to-toe against Piltover. There is a lot already... not right for an 11-year-old girl established in her character leading up to now. On top of that... why did Powder do what she did? To echo Silco... for respect.

That’s not reading into anything, it was literally explicitly stated. And because it’s animated and written, that moment was clearly inserted for a purpose. Trust me there is no shortage of male friendships in media. Almost every piece of media contains platonic male friendships. Just look at the entire MCU as an example. You’ll live if just this once TV writers hint at a male character bringing other male character to his bedroom (they don’t even act on the implications of this scene so it’s literally not an issue).

Notice that Powder did not react to Vi hitting her. She reacted to Vi leaving after that. She was too emotionally charged to even recognize that happened. Had Vi been able to go back as she had wanted to, I do believe that this is one of those moments that would play out differently in retrospect than it does in the moment. That Powder would recognize why Vi had to step away in that moment. But unfortunately for both, Marcus prevented Vi from going back to Powder.

He'd hold Powder hostage as Vi runs up to him, his goons would subdue and kill her while Powder screams, and then he'd slit Powder's throat. Marcus saved them both.

Powder was like the embodiment of "no good deed goes unpunished" and "good intentions pave the road to hell". Like she want's to help but because she's too young and naïve, she doesn't think about that her helping would lead to. Only thinks about throwing the bomb but doesn't think who it'll hurt. The writers had so much fun with these characters! This story is so good! DAME!

Something that's easily missed - Powder was damaged long before this episode. In the opening scene of the first episode on the bridge, she's already experiencing her disassociative hallucinations (the white images scratched onto the film) and there are hints throughout the first few episodes that she may be a sociopath as well. They laid the groundwork for what is to come so brilliantly.

I'm so glad you guys rewatched the first couple episodes, shows how much your invested in the story and looking for those details! And this show is one that reqards that 😊 This episode is so painful, and yeah, it does a great job of showing how both girls were just trying to help. I obviously don't agree with Vi hitting Jinx but i completely understand that she's also just a kid and is unable to handle these emotions and just needs to take a moment. And then Powder was just trying to help and was so excited and then her entire world just crumbled in an instant Can't wait for the next episode!

Don't know how far ahead you are in watching the series, but there's also a music video for the opening song "Enemy" that has additional animated scenes not in the show itself. It's worth its own reaction. I'd recommend watching it between episodes 6 & 7, but it does technically contain spoilers, but they're subtle unless you know what you're looking for.

Marcus is a little shit turd but taking Vi did save her life because with how weak she was, they would’ve killed her but sadly it makes it looks like she abandoned Powder 😭 It wildest episode and just sets the tone of the show. Can’t wait to see your reactions to it!!

On balance, you're probably right that Marcus saved Vi's life here.. but: Vi has just spent a lot of energy fighting for her family's lives, been blown up, had a steel door fall on her, and fallen out a window - albeit with Vander taking the impact. So she's pretty beaten up. On the other hand, Silcos goons just had Vi rip through 8-10 of them in a few seconds, and also been blown up - several of them are probably dead, with only the survivors present (one of them - Sevika is unconscious with a shredded arm). Their morale is likely a little shaky. So, if Vi was able to pick up a metal pipe or other improvised weapon, and with her single minded purpose being to defend Powder, charged in, I'm not so sure they'd be up for the fight. Silco, could of course, threaten to kill Powder, but he dropped his knife, and might not have time to find it and recover it. As I said, you're probably right.. but the show makes me think about things like this.

​@@Hohum37 I think the big tattooed goon didn't take too much dmg, as he only got upper cutted, while Vi is barely holding his consciousness, which is why the cloroform works so quickly instead of the several minutes (idk, my head canon on that last one). My point is, that guy seems like he's strong enough to take on Vi at that state, and he also has a knife nearby. Like him or not, Marcus did one right thing that night, saving Vi

Man....there are really good shows and then within those really good shows, there's always one episode that rises above the rest and forcefully drags the show into absolute greatness. This episode by far the most important, most dramatic and most impactful to the series. Truly one of the all time great episodes of all time.

One fun detail that's hard to reach is it wasn't Silco, but Vander who went off the rails. Vander tried to kill Silco, who was holding him back, and then start a full on rebellion, which you saw at the start of the first episode. Silco was the diplomatic one.
