@@CarlieAndAnge Just to pour some fuel on this fire, I'm pretty sure one of the ways of writing "squirrel" in Japanese is with a pair of characters meaning something like "seed/nut" and "rat/mouse/rodent". So if you translated it literally character by character, it would be... "seed rat".
@TheMenticore7 ай бұрын
@@DarwinAwardWinner A short googling seems to confirm what you said. It seems squirrel can be either written as 栗鼠 (Symbol for chestnut and rat) or 木鼠 (tree and rat). There seem to be other variants like "ground squirrel" but all of them have the symbol 鼠/rat(mouse) in it.

As the other poster mentioned, Fern and Frieren are “the same” because they both don’t quite like magic all that much, regardless of their inherent talent with it. In fact, it can be argued they’re largely indifferent if it were just by/for themselves. However, Frieren revealed that her magic brought joy, happiness, and awe to someone she cared for (Himmel) and that made her appreciate magic and continue to seek out arbitrary spells. Similarly, that explanation brings Fern’s subconscious feelings to light; that despite claiming she could have done anything as a profession that would have supported her and been satisfied, she still stuck with magic because it made her adoptive father (Heiter) happy and look at her in awe. So, they’re the same, Frieren and Fern, like Tolkien’s warrior-philosopher Faramir. “I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.” It’s about being strong and accomplishing things not for oneself, but for those whom you love.

I do love that the show sets it up for the stereotypical anime priest isn't really pious and is willing to do anything to avoid death trope, but then it turns out it was just an excuse to keep Frieren around long enough to train Fern so she would have someone to look after her after he was gone.

This animé guys... it's too much for my heart. The season is soon over and I swear to you I just can't think something I would remove to it. It's just perfect! And believe me I have a very sharpened and critical mind (very often some communities think I'm too harsh with their fav animé when I'm just giving my honest opinion). The impression I got at the beginning of the show is it seemed slow while being fast at the same time and I can tell you that this is one of the strengths of the animé! I love how it makes me connect so deeply to the characters. This show made me cry several times and they didn't even need dramatic scenes to do so. The writing of it is INSANE. My work is being an academic researcher and I often review papers, books' chapters, etc. I can tell you that this has been written by a hard-working and gifted person. I am genuinly amazed by it. I saw some of you comparing the genius writing of this show to Attack on titan and I agree. Hajime Isayama is definitely a genius in terms of writing and is at the top level of the best written mangas (even if some of you might have not liked the writing of the final chapters). And I can easily say that even if the writing here is totally different, Yamada Kanehito is an outstanding writer. And I feel very grateful that this animé started when AOT (snk) finished. It feels just like AOT's writer just passed the torch to the Frieren's one. Once again these shows are completly different so does their writing styles. And yet both of them are at the highest level of their art.

The way I see it, Frieren genuinely didn't think much about her journey with the hero party before. A decade is just a small part of her long live, that's why the regret she showed on Himmel's funeral for not trying to spend more time with her friends, for not trying to know more about them is so strong. Before Heither died, she told him to spend as much time as possible with Fern because she already knows that not everyone have as much time as her. Now, only after knowing that regret, after she started revisiting all the places that she have traveled through with them, only now she can appreciate more the memories of the time she spent with the hero party. As for her hobby of collecting spells, it was probably her hobby even before, cause as she said in episode one when she was asked "where are you going now", "I'll just continue collecting spells" or smth to that effect.

Frieren doesn't have a burning passion towards magic. But Himmel liked her silly magic, so she ended up "somewhat" liking magic. . Fern doesn't really have a passion for magic either. But Heiter saw potential in Fern to be a mage and that ended up making her "somewhat liking magic". . Idk if this makes any sense tho but that's my take on why Frieren said we're the same when Fern said she "somewhat likes magic"
@kasagure.7 ай бұрын
the name of the episode being "It Didn't Have to Be Magic" is very poetic. they both desperately wanted to do something, anything, to repay/honor the ones they loved. it didn't have to be magic.
@ATypiclaNPC7 ай бұрын
Not entirely true what u have said. Frieren dosn´t like magic because of Himmel but she likes to collect this silly spells because of Himmel. That she liked magic somewhat was clear to here long before she knew Himmel. I guess picking up silly spells was a habit she had from her Master, but when Himmel made a complyment about the silly speels that also became a thing she liked. So its just strong conected because if the other thing were not there this woulnd´t also being there.
@Ayakaa247 ай бұрын
Yeah, just like the above comment, Frieren do have burning passion for magic. But you know living for almost forever, that passion may be gone. But himmel rekindle that fire again and she never stop ever since. So it's the same with fern. U can see the flashback her parents are happy that she have talent for magic and she does too. But after they are dead, fern are going to throw it all up until heiter rekindle that love for magic (butterfly scene). Basically they are similar

I was thinking the exact same thing with the connection of Himmel and Thors. Characters with a very limited amount of screen time, yet their impact is felt because of their overwhelming greatness, benevolence and wisdom living on through the memories of the people they touched. I haven't read Frieren so i don't know exactly how everything turns out, but from the anime episodes so far i'm thinking characters like Himmel are meant as the antithesis to Flamme (in this respect). Which you can distinguish by how Flamme influenced Frieren and how Himmel influenced her. Specifically i'm talking about their seemingly opposite views on history.
