I actually broke this rule because I wasn't aware of it (young and stupid) and I managed to get myself and my colleague a raise because our new colleague with no experience was getting more than us, which we weren't supposed to know, but we complained to management....

I live within the Washington DC area, and I'm a government contractor. We all freely tell each other our salaries, because it's in our best interest to know if we aren't being paid enough for our work. It's also easy to change companies since there are so many jobs, so once you find out you aren't earning enough compared to your peers, it's certainly possible to change companies and get a bump in income.

If you are employed by the government in Germany you are usually paid according to a tarrif scheme so there, you can look up everyone's salary based on their degree (e.g. bachelors, masters, etc) and the years of work experience they have. This - by the way - also applies to the chancellor or president.

Gutes Beispiel sind Zahlungen an die EU (Brutto), unterschlagen aber die Zahlungen der EU an Deutschland. Bruttobetrag an die EU - Gelder von der EU = Nettobetrag

It seems that people in Germany think Americans are completely transparent in revealing their salary. I think we are just the same as Germans. It is not very appropriate to ask (or to tell) other your salary. Only 2 things can happen - either YOU will feel bad because they earn more money - or THEY will feel bad because you earn more money. Both ways loose. So how much do Janusz, Cari and Manuel earn - Netto?

I think the topic of salary is a universal taboo questions in all countries. Because people tend to link the salary with self worth together and also people don’t really know what’s the real questions behind it. Not everyone has a good intention to it. So salary makes people kind of vulnerable.

Wie hatte damals ein Arbeitskollege mal gesagt ...? "Wir arbeiten alle an der gleichen Maschine, jeder gleich schnell - und trotzdem hast du 5 verschiedene Leute mit 5 unterschiedlichen Gehältern" Die einzigen, die von der Geheimhaltung der Löhne profitieren sind die Unternehmen - manchen is das sogar so wichtig, dass unter Androhung einer saftigen Vertragsstrafe explizit der interne Austausch unter den Mitarbeitern übers Gehalt untersagt wird (extern natürlich genauso).

Es gibt Leute mit regelmäßig dutzenden Krankentagen im Jahr und welche, die nie krank sind. Man munkelt, die Ausgangssituation der beiden sei bei Gehaltsgesprächen unterschiedlich.

The thing with the salary in germany is: "The more you earn the less you are willing to speak about it". And teachers are still very open about it with maybe 66k a year. The sentence "because so many get jealous" is also because we had discussions about taxing the rich people more and they always drop that sentence to shut that argument down. And if your contract says you cant talk about your salary your company can shove it up somewhere because its not valid, you can scream your salary so that everyone on the planet can hear it and it would be completely legal

As a born and raised Frankfurter, I think you'll need at least around 2.5k€ in frankfurt to live comfortably. This accounts for rent for a 2room apt. outside the center (but still inside frankfurt) for around 1k€ to 1.5k€ and then around 1k€ left for food, hobbies and savings. Less can work as, well but i think it wont be as carefree and you'd not be able to go out as often.

@@nn5410 have you ever considered why it's rude to ask someone about there finances though? And why so many people can't just answer the question directly? It's different for everyone but a lot of people don't feel comfortable talking about their salaries for fear that the it's not enough by society's standards. I'm American as well so I completely understand it's not a question most citizens here would be so open to talking about either, but there is an underlying reason for that. We shouldn't base our value to society or measure our success solely on how high or income is, but for a lot of people, particularly Americans, it's certainly like that

Actually, the concept of hiding the salary is advantageous only for one person - a boss of the company. If everyone suddenly knows the salary of each other in the company - it will be the hell for a boss, many people will start asking for a raise.

I think salary being a taboo topic is a global phenomenon. It is the same here in South Africa. I think as social creatures we gravitate towards seeing the world through the lens of of hierarchies, and salary, whether good/bad or effective/not is a way of placing someone in a social hierarchy.

Hallo ihr Lieben :) bei uns im Raum Paderborn sind die Gehälter natürlich viel niedriger , aber da ich davor in Großstadt gewohnt habe, kann ich sagen, dass man in kleineren Städten deutlich weniger Stress hat ( Miete, Straßenverkehr etc..) Die Sache mit Frankfurt ist, dass das Durchschnittseinkommen aufgrund von Finanz, Banken, Versicherung und Immobiliengeschäften höher ist wie im Rest Deutschlands. Andererseits aber auch hohe Armutsquote, vorallem in den Randgebieten. Schlechte Lokalpolitk hinsichtlich Integration,Arbeitsmarkt,Städtebau usw. Einige profitieren, viele aber auch nicht. the salary gap is catastrophic in Germany. A hard working middle or low class employee gets enough to survive, while someone in finances speaks about a 6 figure salary.

It's only natural that people in finances make so much money, their lives are sold to the devil essentially, they have no meaning. Beyond around 80000 euros per year, money does not make you happy. It is true that not that many people make 80000 in Germany, still, but the idea that you should be jealous of investment bankers that make 500000 a year, remember that their entire lives revolve around money, and they are likely spiritually vapid and rely on expensive hobbies like prostitution, drugs and golf to make their lives bearable.

Everybody is free to choose their career. Not everybody wants to work in finance field. Anyway in Germany the paygap between people with no studies and people who study and have a career is really small in comparison with USA and other capitalist countries. I know handworkers who have jobs between 2700-10000€ netto and people with Master studies who earn around 2500-3800€. Yes, there are people who earn around 100-120k, but after taxes and everything you just get 4800-5500€ netto so not even double as someone who never bothered to study and had no will in life.

My experience with German companies is very bizarre. Two people working on the same role with same job expectations will earn very differently. I know two friends of mine who are working at the same company and the salary difference is more than 30,000 Euros/year for the same job role. That is why it is like an unwritten rule in Germany that no one wants to talk about salaries (because they know they might be earning more than others and companies and employees know it very well).

I'm originally from the Midwest but moved to Germany some time ago. I think it depends on the job or career. There is no mystery around what you are expected to make in your career in sales, tech, medicine, teaching and most careers that are well-paid and transparent about potential earnings and average salary. This info is not hard to find out. Jobs that are lower paid and not skill-orientated or require little education may not disclose their salary upfront, most entry-level jobs are for students and people who simply want to have a job in the service sector. I've only seen people afraid to talk about how much they make if they are in a job that pays poorly. Other than that, especially in the U.S. we pretty much know what everyone makes based on their jobs. Germany may be different, because of the discretion, it is hard to gauge actually if people are being underpaid or wages controlled because of the taboo of talking about earnings.

Es kommt auch immer sehr auf die Ausgaben an. Gerade Homeoffice heißt oft auch, dass man niedrige Kosten für Mobilität hat. Wenn dann die Wohnung auch günstig ist, hat man auch mit 3000 netto ziemlich was über.

I'm born and raised in the U.S. we talk about salary all the time, but it depends if the person has a professional career or a job. People with jobs usually don't talk about it as much, unless it is to complain to others about it. People with careers don't mind because it's usually why they got into their profession in the first place...because it pays well or has the potential to pay well.

Es freut mich, dass ihr endlich in meiner Stadt gelandet seid :) aber mal ganz ehrlich, ihr hättet besser in andere Stadtviertel fragen können um bessere Antworten zu bekommen. Es gibt auch "normale" Menschen die auch "normal" Leben können, mit einen "normalen" Gehalt. Ja, es ist etwas teurer geworden wegen Inflation, man kann aber trotzdem mit einen Gehalt als Single von 1,500 netto zurecht kommen. Es ist zwar kein luxus leben, aber man kann schon davon leben in dieser Stadt. Soooo teuer ist es hier nicht. Kann aber auch sein, dass ich etwas voreingenommen bin weil ich seit Jahren hier lebe 😅

Das würd mich mal in Köln interessieren. Gilt der Rheinländer doch generell als sehr offen. Bei uns in der Firma ist das kein Thema. Da wir im öffentlichen Dienst arbeiten. Wenn man also weiß welche Position derjenige inne hat und vielleicht auch noch die Erfahrungsstufe kann man das ziemlich genau aus einer Tabelle ablesen.

Hallo aus einem der Hochhäuser. Abgesehen von den Verschwiegenheitsklauseln die viele in ihrem Vertrag haben hat man sehr viel Konkurrenz. Also gilt es Angriffsfläche zu minimieren, zu denen eigentlich alle privaten Informationen zählen. Denn Freunde findet man in den ganzen Türmen eher nicht also sollte man die privat Sachen auch privat sein lassen.

ist schon richtig so das das man persönlich sein gehalt nicht verrät. Meine Erfahrung ist auch das das gehalt privat bleiben sollte. Warum ? Es sorgt für Neid, Eifersucht, falsche schlangen aber auch unruhe in einer firma. Aber wenn man sein gehalt anonym teilt oder im internet ist es absolut legitim. Ich war früher anderer meinung und habe mich gefragt warum man das gehim hält aber Menschen beurteilen einen nach seinem gehalt, aber auch die erfahrungen die machte sind erschreckend. Aber wenn man sowieso den reichen lifestyle lebt und spendabel ist ist es kein problem oder wenn es im bekannten kreis sehr stabil zu läuft. Das hängt aber auch stark von der steuerklasse ab

Ich finde es lustig, dass so viele haben die gleiche über Amerika gesagt, dass in Amerika man teilt sein Gehalt miteinander. Ich glaube das eigentlich falsch ist.
