Some great comments here. Ray Mears is genuinley my hero. I've seen his live shows 3 times and had the pleasure of meeting him. If I could live my life again and have a choice I'd try to live how he does. The world would be a better place if we all had his attitude, patience and care.

My family migrated to Canada in the early 1800’s from Italy. Hunting and fishing was a very important aspect of how my forefathers learned to thrive on this newly discovered way of life. Passed down through generations my father as a child was exposed to fishing at a young age and in his early twenties was introduced to the French river through his uncle. Fishing trips to northern Ontario for him became an annual tradition beginning in the late 60’s. my father carried out this tradition with me growing up in a very average suburban lifestyle as a single parent. My appreciation for the simplicity of Northern Ontario can not be describe with words. The journey of my soul began in finding peace in nature and forever will my idea of happiness be tied to a close bond shared with this lane. I am grateful that I was lucky enough to be inspired by the way things used to be.

My father taught me at a young age. I don't remember when. He taught me to make a camp fire, he taught me to collect wild food (which was supper). He taught me to respect nature. I watched Les Higgins in awe. I watched Ray with excitement. I try my best to pass this to my son.

Ray Thank you. for 4 days I have been on a terribly stressful journey beside my lovely bride. you see her father has chosen Hospice. Non stop stress and little good sleep makes things worse. but while she showered this morning I sat in the truck ready to go and watched your latest video. I feel much more relaxed now and am ready to face the day. because You're right afterall, we do belong to nature and Dad is heading back into her warm embrace. Thanks Ray. You have touched many lives with your work in more ways than you know. From inspiring future conservationists, to comforting survivors. I’ve heard the quote “we belong to it” attributed to several people, mostly native Americans. It is so true. When I’m in the woods, I always start off feeling like a visitor...an outsider. But, as I forget the calendar and ignore my watch and let the thinking and mechanics of my daily life dissolve ... that’s when I become a member of the community of nature. I don’t believe humans are “just another animal,” but we lose something when we forget that we are still animals. More, yes. But, not less. Nature is our inheritance. But also our origins.

I love ontario with its great lakes, i used to live out there for the summer holidays, spent 2 months there for 10 years, stopped with my grandma who emigrated there, spent a lot of time with native Americans, to this day i still feel privileged to have done so as it will live with me forever. Great video, chapter 3 for me, fire is like a gift from the gods, even if you can make a fire you should still practice with new tools to further the skill as normal tools might not be available when you need most, breath with the land at it will breath with you.

Hey Ray, I used to see your show before but haven't in years. Good to see you in my amazing part of the world. I'm not sure if people here realize how lucky we are to be able to drive 20 minutes and be in total wilderness. I went yesterday to a beautiful little Lake and caught trout and saw a lynx and a moose running down the road in front of us.

What strikes me most, after following you and your exploits for years, is the ever increasing humility, as one cannot but realize that we are, in the greater scheme of things: irrelevant (although we hold all the potential to be either supportive or destructive). Thank you for your endless dedication and commitment to not only preserve the knowledge but also for awakening a generation to a much greater awareness through participation. It is a fact that many great men, adventurers and explorers have gone before you. But no-one can claim to have done what you have done in the revival (and therefore survival) of much of the revered practice of bushcraft. Bringing to life that which had been nothing more than dusty historical relics in publications of ages past. Please do not stop doing what you are doing. Love your videos. At 12:30 you quote "nature does not belong to us,we belong to it" I believe this is an old Australian Aborigine saying: "The land does not belong to us, we belong to the land". How true.... And here is an Old American Indian Quote " When the last fish has been caught, and the last tree has been cut down, only then will man come to know, that money can not be eaten"....
