Great choice of boat lads.... You have a very pretty and truly 'go anywhere' boat. The C&Ns were massively over-engineered, built without compromise. As an owner myself of a C&N for the last 25 years best advise I can give you is not to be in a hurry to change things - just go sailing and have adventures!!

Sailed a bit on the West Coast and know Kyles of Bute an Rothsay well, made me nostalgic seeing your video. Love the choice of boat. Some years ago my brother in law and I rescued the crew of a Nicholson 30 when their tender broke down, and took them back to their boat. Proper old school vessel with original RDF set. The whole thing original 1960s throughout -just lovely. The family had learnt to sail an Optimist in St Catherine's dock and then bought the boat to go and have adventures. Not sure of your route South but all I would say is beware passing the Isle Du Sein on your trip down the French coast!

Excellent boat for the money. Definitely a blue water cruiser with that solid hull, full length keel, protected prop and full skeg rudder. Looks like a heavy displacement too so it will handle rough weather with ease. Great choice.

When trying to launch the dinghy into the wind and waves try throwing the anchor out and pulling yourself out then holding fast on the anchor until you get the outboard started.

Enjoy some sailing on the west coast of Scotland before going further a field. Check and replace Skin Fittings as necessary, check Steering gear check Standing Rigging, auxiliary engine is useful but don’t rely on it. Consider your options and limit your ambitions to match your abilities. Then go, enjoy and explore !

It is probably just as well that the first boat fell through. Wooden boats take loads of upkeep and I would guess that a survey would have shown many defects that would need to be attended to.
