Really interesting seeing how you have brought the house back to life but kept the aesthetic of the 1940's as the theme rather than modernising it

Thanks, I definitely want to keep/enhance the vintage feel of the home

For me, the most interesting part is probably the insight into historical house and furnishings styles in the US, and the comparison. The "waterfall/Art Deco" you say did not really catch on that much in the US did catch on much more here in Czechia... the style looks very quintessential to me. It made me wonder why, and conclude it may have something to do with the fact we were a recently freed nation and there was probably far less nostalgia for the past three hundred years. 😉 So modern styles (especially functionalism) caught on more.

I stayed in Prague several years ago and got to check out a lot of the cool architecture that doesn’t exist much anywhere else (like cubism). It was very cool! Yeah, Europe made a lot more deco furniture than the US. I think it’s beautiful! But you just can’t find it over here sadly. Most of those cool modern styles were invented in Europe (art nouveau, bauhaus).

I had a house built at the tail end of this period that I loved so much. It was a twin with it's neighbor. They were built when the mid-1800s home built on the lot was torn down. This meant our lot was only wide enough for the house and the garage, but was very deep. I also tried to lean into the period with style, but I went slightly more mid-century with since the house was built closer to 1950. We recently sold it (with the kiddos getting older we needed a second bathroom desperately) but I got to go even older with a 1900 home. Side note, I also bought that stool for my vanity! It's the perfect height.

I found a vanity very similar to the 1 in your video. Someone put it out on the curb. It as dirty and covered in stickers, but i tjought it was pretty and could be cleaned up, plus it was free, so now its mine.😊

Congratulations on the home. Well done. You've got a cottage... The furniture you've found is really quite beautiful (I dream of a space large enough for a vanity). Good for you for keeping it in the same period as the home. I adore the 30's, they did what they needed to in order to survie. During that decade my Northern Ontario maternal Granddad built 2 homes for resale and one home to live in. I suspect the patterns came from catalogues - simple square house with a greenhouse in the backyard. My only suggestion is to live with the kitchen for a while in its present configuration. See if the layout logic makes sense. I've worked in older kitchens and, honestly, it was easier than the modern. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Thanks, I really want to lean into the time period of the home. I don’t plan to do much to the kitchen both because of budget and because there’s not really a good alternative layout to do. The only thing I really want is a dishwasher 😂

@@DixieDIY Dishwashers are a game changer. I wish our apartment had one, but at least we have air conditioning and a balcony for the veg patch. Leaning into the historic/vintage furniture is perfect. Modern stuff is just so large...

Lovely home! I would LOVE to get a place with an old established apple tree-even if it needs some tending. Also being lazy I'd be pro cottage garden but would mix some evergreen things in.

Thank you! The main weeds I didn’t want were the ones that were either dangerous (poison ivy) or damaging other plants (like some other vines). If this wasn’t the front yard that needs to be frequently accessed, but rather a wild space in the backyard, I probably would have left it alone.

Im dreaming of decorating in a style that isnt ikea so I really love this kind of content. Historical decor is usually to 1950s, fussy or expensive for me right now. A simple start is just the thing I need. I can make curtains!

If the underpaint peeled off, I don’t think it’s lead. I think it will be acrylic and that’s what makes it flexible! I think.

That’s what I was hoping! But I didn’t have anymore tests at the time and didn’t want to leave peeling paint in my kids room. There is definitely lead paint elsewhere in the house.
