Lauren and Chris... Love the fact that you're so modest about what your knowledge is, while at the same fixing and figuring some pretty important stuff. Delightful. I have a similar plan which is a few years off. I work just above Brighton marina, so please do let me know if you simply need help with a spare nautical pair of hands!

Are you sure that repair on the Mast is galvanised steel? It would be absolutely the wrong metal to use. The mast is aluminium alloy and the repair patch should be the same alloy. Using steel and aluminium together will create a corrosive galvanic action that would cause the weld to fail in time. If it is aluminium alloy then red oxide is the wrong primer and it should be left unpainted as aluminium forms a natural oxide layer. If it is galvanised steel get a second opinion about galvanic corrosion.

Diesel and oil in itself is a lot less dense than water and as such will tend to float except if bound to a substrate heavier than water. The black sludge in marinas is most likely the product of anti fouling paints. Thus going electric will not really solve the pollution problem. I am in favour of electric motors as it will make people up their sailing skills and the lack of noise and stink is a huge plus. However anti fouling technology needs a lot of further research and in my very limited knowledge it seems that copper coat type products and non ablative hard anti foul surfaces is probably the less destructive way to go.
@SailingIndiana3 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks so much for watching and for the comment! We agree that the diesel and oil will tend to float if it gets in the water, but there is definitely a lot of black stuff that comes out of the exhaust systems (we currently have a gritty black trail coming from the exhaust pipe down the the water line!) so perhaps it’s more of a byproduct of using the diesel and oil? The marina was built in the late 70’s and we’re told not much dredging has happened since then, so we’re not surprised it’s gotten this bad! Electric propulsion is a technology that is fast evolving and does solve a multitude of issues. But we agree with you, antifoul technology also needs to progress along with it! Copper coatings seems to be the solution for now, but we need to research more in this area, as we’ve got limited knowledge. Thanks again!

@@SailingIndiana yeah thinking of sailing up the east coast of Australia but not for a while as we have minimal offshore experience with sailing only 30 km with 2 knots wind but 20 knots inshore. Even though our boat is 24 foot, it really isn't the best for fast sailing as it has a fat bow and is really thick fibreglass. It'll get us there at least and we're eventually gonna get one maybe the size of your boat.

Why the need for a large Ali patch welded onto the mast?
@SailingIndiana3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, we were told that there were a couple of blocks there with different metals to the mast creating a corrosion point. We weren’t told how bad it got, but bad enough to warrant the weld patch. We’ve had a few ‘professionals’ look at it, who have all said it’s a good weld, so we are happy it’s ok. Probably the strongest point on the mast now?

The dirt they are dredging couldn't have diesel or oil in it as oil/fuel floats and wouldn't be possible to have sank and contaminated what they are digging up, maybe put a little more thought into that next time?
@SailingIndiana3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and for the comment! There is definitely some black silty stuff sitting at the bottom of our fuel tank and after pumping 30ltrs out last week (to check the tank) and leaving it to sit over night, there was definitely some black silty stuff in the bottom of each of the containers we were using. So no doubt this is part of what is sitting at the bottom of the marina? Agreed, this will not be the diesel/oil per say, but certainly a by product of using this fuel and certainly comes from the pump? And certainly a contaminant from an environmental point of view? Would you agree/is this correct?
