I'm so, so happy with your new purchases, I'm an interior decorator and love old Chinese furniture. Just great Miriam! Please take care with the electric oven on a wooden surface. If it is the case try to put some isolating device in the middle otherwise it will damage your box. My experience is that these small electric ovens work differently from the conventional ones. I made some scones a few days ago and they didn't rise properly. I think we would have to look for a KZbin tutorial, maybe there is some trick. Heartly congrats for the new beautiful acquisitions and now enjoy them with Sansan!

I'm not completely certain, but it seems that a lot of antique Chinese furniture ends up sold in other countries as well. I live in an area with a large Chinese population, and the antique shops in our area have a lot of old Chinese furniture and other household items. Some of it likely was from Chinese families who have moved here ages ago, but I suspect some of it initially ended up in the homes of wealthy non-Asians. It's not cheap stuff, either. It's the really nice stuff. I have a couple of the old Chinese cedar chests in my home now, handed down from family, and I suspect I will end up with the rest of them, and I hope to have at least one to give to each of my children so that they don't forget their heritage. My parents, though they prefer modern Western furniture, still own a set of Chinese parlor furniture, including a front table, two "couches" and an end table. I will probably end up with that if my sibling doesn't want it. I really love the older stuff, too. I'm a huge fan of wandering around antique and thrift shops, and we will sometimes spend our weekends visiting areas with lots of these shops. You did a wonderful job with the little reading room. Books are so important for children. I know many people already commented about this, but definitely anchor that shelf, please. The ones I like are those L-shaped metal ones. I've had one bad experience with a bookshelf that, even though not heavily loaded, ended up toppling down because it was too top-heavy. No one was near it, so no injuries, but it was still scary. It's still possible with the tile on the walls; you just have to be more careful with drilling. Here's a site with advice: homeguides.sfgate.com/put-screws-ceramic-tile-23660.html

That's a toaster oven. It' meant to toast bread so it will never really act like a normal oven. People do use it to bake cakes in, of course. It just works different, or the cake doesn't turn out the same. The sitting area is so nice :)

Looks like you will have to experiment with the oven a bit. Perhaps it will need a higher temperature? Also, if you are at a significantly higher elevation than in Sweden, you may need to adjust the recipe slightly. (Basically you make the batter a little wetter and use less leavening agents in recipes that call for them.) I lived near Nairobi for a while and I found that at 2000m I had to make a few adjustments compared to Texas, where I grew up near the ocean.
@cathymarsollier94173 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. While living in Cuzco, I found leavening was really difficult at 3300 meters.

Mao didn't want any old things to be left from the old imperium. Thank goodness they made him see the cultural importance of the palaces and left them alone but there has been a true iconoclasm. Some farmers hid old furniture or painted them and used them in the stables to help it survive. As some had been for hundreds of years in the family. I have a very old closet ( about 250 years old) that was painted blue and hidden underneath the rubble. I shipped it to my house where it is there now for a long time. Perhaps you and your husband can find more, Europe sees them as real treasures. I am happy you got some now for your little family.

San san was so cute when he gave a kiss to Yonghong 🥰 We have a Chinese oven by Supor. I think the price was around 300 rmb or even less. It’s really good quality, the temperature is correct and it heats evenly. I can bake anything with it as long as it fits to that small oven 😅 I’ve heard from my foreign friends who have oven that many have the same problem as you that the oven doesn’t heat up properly or you need a lot longer time for baking. I hope your oven wasn’t too expensive 😣

Oh, please, if you haven’t already, anchor that big shelf to the wall... but your new room looks lovely so does the new old furniture. Are any of those old boxes made of camphor wood, they will have a lovely smell inside if they do. My father in law who was Chinese had one of these, in it was stored the most beautiful cashmere coat from pre WW2 times and the most elegant hat, of very rare quality then. They were in perfect condition. This kind of linen chest should be similar to store things where insects will not have them for dinner!
