Umbilical cord, long short, soft hard, cow tail, lanyard. It is an important material for safety, which I have heard of different names, which has ready-made varieties produced by several companies.
Today we will make a fixed lanyard with a locking carabiner on the long and short ends that we use in canyons. But first of all, I would like to give information before starting the lanyard construction.
Let's first look at the functions of the lanyard.
It is used for safety with positioning in stations or lines.
It is used as a cord for hand ascender, so there is no need for a second cord.
Since the dynamic rope is used, it helps to reduce the impact that will be taken during a fall with limited shock absorption.
Now let's examine the features of the lanyard we will make.
It is prepared using dynamic rope between 9 mm and 10.5 mm diameters.
It consists of two different cord lengths.
The references of the cord lengths should be as follows.
The short cord should almost touch the bottom of our chin. The long cord should be at eye level.
It has locking carabiners at both ends and is tied using a double fishing knot.
Finally, let's look at the use of the lanyard.
Before using the lanyard, the rope, knots and carabiners should be checked. The rope should be checked for fraying, knots opening or not opening the carabiners doors.
If the carrying column of the belt to which the lanyard will be attached is metal, it should be attached directly, and if it is textile material, it should be attached with a carabiner. The reason for this is that when the textile material and the rope rub against each other, it will wear out more quickly than metal.
When sitting on the lanyard, the size of the long cord should be adjusted well in order to easily reach the station, lines or hand ascender. Because if it is more than arm's length, the possibility of not being able to reach arises.
We should limit the drop factor to less than 0.5. The fall factor is very important and is calculated by the height of the fall divided by the length of the lanyard. In short, the safety point where we attach the lanyard should be above the waist as much as possible.
Now let's start making our lanyard.
My height is 1.70 and 2 meters of rope is enough. Depending on the physique of each athlete, the length of the rope we will make a lanyard may be slightly above or below 2 meters. To tie the lanyard to the belt, we will tie a simple knot. We equalize the ends of the rope and hold it in the middle. Then, at a distance of about 10 cm from the vertex, we hold either side of the rope and tie the knot that we will form a loop. We fill this middle point around the rope once and pass it through to form a small loop. Then we tighten this knot by pulling the ropes one by one. A small ring is enough for us.
Now let's come to the ends to be attached to the carabiner.
We tie a double fisherman's knot by measuring 2 spans from the end of the rope. After wrapping the rope around the rope 2 times, we make our double fishing knot by passing the end of the rope through these loops and start tightening the knot. The ends of the fisherman's knots must be at least 10 cm. We can easily check this too. Put the end of the knot in your palm and if it goes a little over, it means it's at least 10 cm. We tighten the knot. We apply the same procedures to the other cord of the lanyard. We tie our fisherman's knot. We check whether the end of the knot is 10 cm or not. We tighten the knot. We attach the carabiners to the ends of the 2 cords. To tighten the knots, we put our weight on our lanyard and tighten the knots. We check the last available lengths.
Our lanyard is ready for its first canyoning event. Finally, I strongly recommend all canyon athletes to use a lanyard. It is not a material that we can say without a lanyard and it is very important for our safety. Remember, we only have one life. See you in future adventures.
