Until a just a couple of years ago, most diabetics had to test their blood sugar by pricking their finger and then using a separate little device to analyse the blood. More recently, continuous glucose monitors were developed (or at least became much smaller and cheaper). Now you can get a little plastic disc about the size of a large coin, and it attaches to your skin for up to two weeks. Early models needed to be scanned manually by holding up a smartphone against them (which was still a million times more convenient than manual pricking tests), but the newest ones send out the readings continuously and are collected with your smartphone, which can send you alerts for if readings or too high or low. The main one is Freestyle Libre 2, although that's just one of the brands.
