My 21 year old grandson has the same issue. When I found out I was very angry. I think about our Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are all written in cursive. It's extremely important that everyone knows how to read them all and that's just the beginning! Good for you girls making the effort to learn!!!

This is exactly why they stopped teaching it in the US schools. They do not want the children to be able to read the official documents of this country that were written in cursive. I have taught my grandson to read and write it so that if he ever needs it he will be able to use it.

I think it’s sad they no longer teach cursive writing. One drawback I can think of would be if you wanted to become a historian or genealogist. Most of the old wills and documents are written in cursive. 😊

Lord, what a crime committed by the school systems! I have nieces and nephews that never learned either. I feel for y'all. Cursive is such a beautiful art form that can be made into your own personal style. Your own cursive signature is your stamp in my opinion. Watching y'all try was heartbreaking!! Our nephews and nieces weren't taught it. I was writing letters to them in cursive when, finally, one confessed they didn't know how to write it and could barely read it. I offered to print instead, and he said to continue in cursive because he wanted to pursue learning it. I felt so ancient ((chuckle)), but it was so sweet when they said, "Your letters are worth it, so we'll learn." ❤❤

Hello, girls. I think it’s a shame that this old form of writing has been removed from the classroom! I grew up in southern Georgia, I really don’t remember it being called cursive. To me it was learning to write in longhand . Mine is not that great i do admit, my father had beautiful penmanship. Keep it up, you both will achieve this and it will become a natural way of communicating with one another. Should continue and not be just another one of the lost ways of our American history. There’s another beautiful way of writing called calligraphy, sorry if i misspelled it, more so than longhand takes more practice. I used to work in a grocery store and there was a customer that wrote out her check every time in calligraphy. Really beautiful. Look it up, y’all just may find another hobby. Honestly, I've written cursive since I was 7. Momma insisted on it. And now, at 33, I can look back and see that I was lucky to have that kind of tutelage. But also, once the girls started the months, I never realized just how CRUCIAL it is when learning cursive to see how cursive is formed. It's second nature for me to do the F in February straight into the e, but if the girls ain't never seen it they wouldn't know. Incredible. So yeah, watching a video to just see how natural cursive is would make their learning so much easier.

Just think everything the two of you have taught yourselves all you have to do is put the same energy into this as you would learning a new instrument or writing a song or learning a new skill for your job . I bet you both will come back on here after you have decided to do this and put everyone to shame . I'm terrible at typing, spelling, knowing where to put periods start a new paragraph so many things. I would never say anything to anyone about not knowing how to do something because I know it feels horrible I have had some just rip into me leaving a comment somewhere about not knowing These things and I would actually go and delete my comment because I was so embarrassed. Don't be embarrassed, its not your fault. You both actually did very well considering you weren't taught. It's much easier to learn the individual letters first. Stringing them together is easier then. You two are absolutely wonderful, talented, thoughtful and intelligent girls who do great things. If you decide to learn cursive, I think you will be glad you did. However, if you never do, its nobody's business. God bless you and thank you for sharing yourselves. I'm right handed & both my (now grown) children are lefties, but we made it work & they both can read & write in cursive.

My daughter was born in 1992, she went to a Christian private school so she was taught how to write cursive. So Thankful for that. But my niece is 2 yrs younger & she was not taught in public school. It is a shame for these schools to stop teaching cursive. But oh gracious what they are teaching now is so much worse. Katie I am left hand, my father was left handed & my daughter is left handed. If you ever want to do genealogy, most of the census records are written in cursive. And a lot of other records from that time are written in cursive, so it’s gonna be hard on those of you who didn’t learn how to read cursive or write cursive to go back and try to piece together your genealogy if that something you’re interested in, it’s really sad that they don’t teach it anymore

I was born in 1959, so I started learning how to write cursive in second grade, and continued taking penmanship classes through sixth grade. If you could see my handwriting now, though, you'd notice it resembles Katie's "connected printing", especially as far as capital letter formation. Also, I attach every capital letter to its word. My Aunt Karen was born in 1941, and worked as a secretary, so she learned shorthand in preparation for her career.

I’m from south Ga and 38 years old, I did learn cursive in school. My son graduated high school this year and attended the same school as I did and he also was taught to write in cursive but has a hard time reading cursive because not many people use cursive these days. I have been told that cursive is not taught in our school system currently.

I remember when they started teaching us cursive in 2nd grade, and felt wonderful to be learning “grown-up writing”. It *is* easier to write cursive than print because you are constantly lifting the pen up when you print. I loved Mama’s handwriting. When I wrote to her lifelong friend when Mama was in a nursing home, Helen said my writing looked liked Mama’s-I felt so touched and proud. Just writing this now makes me miss Mama so much right now. She passed away in 2010.

I was in school from the mid 60's to the mid 70's and we were taught both in grade school. But i clearly recall my 7th grade English teacher telling us "if you don't want to write in cursive then don't. I've printed everything since. But i will say there were a few instances where i was told i needed to write in cursive and i couldn't do it because I'd forgotten how. I was so embarrassed that i spent enough time relearning, refreshing my memory, so that if i have to i can. My grandfather was born in 1900 and had beautiful handwriting.

Cursive is important regarding the historical point of you. You can read civil war soldiers letters to home online to get some real history. Or some of Henry the 8th's, Abraham Lincoln's, Bonnie and Clyde, etc., letters too. I have an old school ledger from the 1860s from my family's home town. Cursive was the dominant method of writing/communication. Thanks for shining a light on this problem in many schools. Enjoy your videos. Tipper, bought your cookbook, yum.

Cursive is beautiful! Practice with a book! In Iowa where I grew up it started in 3rd grade thru 6th. We used the Palmer method. It’s pretty. It was mandatory to write papers in cursive throughout our entire school years once we learned how. Not everyone has good penmanship. You guys did well! Keep practicing. Cursive writing is an art. I do believe your generation does more print style of writing. D’Nealian cursive is an easier way to learn. It’s easier to move into cursive. Love your transparency!

I definitely can see how todays technology is keeping the kids from not only learning cursive, but learning just to write in general. While I still get a few math papers or reports sent home, one teacher told me very soon the schools would be completely paperless. Dang I hate that! Love you girls!

When I was in grade school, we had to learn cursive using the Palmer Method with fountain pens. In the olden times, people learned to write in a style called "copper plate". This is the really beautiful script you sometimes see in old ledgers, family bibles, letters etc. My father was born in 1896, and he could write in copper plate script. Your cursive looks just fine. My granddaughter is your age and was taught cursive in elementary school in Denver, CO. You girls were shortchanged by the NC school system. I’m 74 and learned cursive in school in Memphis , Tennessee.

Learning left handed cursive is harder! My family comes from way back in the hollers of southeastern Kentucky. My sister is left handed. It was sad, as soon as she first reached for things with her left hand it was tied behind her back. She is still left handed!

You can get a book that my Granddaughter asked for off of Amazon. It's called “Cursive without Tears.” It's an easy-to-follow workbook. There is no shame in not knowing cursive, because our public schools have deemed it unnecessary. However, they've taken that learning time to throw in things that are ridiculous. They really need to add more life skills classes. Such as simple banking and paying bills. How to apply for a mortgage. How to not get into debt and the pitfalls that follow if you do. I really hope they bring our public schools up to standard one of these days.

When I was in the 3 rd grade we started with the cursive ABC’s then words then sentences then paragraphs then essay. We had a great teacher Mrs. Woodruff, she was tough! We learned! God bless teachers like her!

My grandmother was adamant not only that I learn cursive but that I perfect my "penmanship" nd as a result I'v found that not only is a lot faster than print but also no one will try to steal your notes in school or at work because they can't really read them (huge bonus)

I am retired, and we did have penmanship in school. I truly think it is an art that is being lost, but us still as important as spelling. grammar, and solid math skills. I helped my daughter learn when I realized that both writing and even spelling were being ignored in school ( she is slightly older than you girls, 32). I think writing is comparable to crochet, quilting, knitting, embroidery, etc. It is practical, but also a creative and beautiful art form that should not be lost. It is also a more personal communication method. I admire the two of you for attempting to add this skill to your repertoire of accomplishments !! Keep up the good work! ❤

I don’t think it has been taught at public schools for quite some time. Cursive is cool because you can create your own style with it. Fun video😊.

You both did a great job! Remember, learning cursive is a process. You must learn how to correctly from the strokes of each individual letter. Each one will have a specific starting point, specific strokes, etc. When I taught cursive to my students, I would use the set of lines like you described, 2 dotted line sandwiched between 2 solid lines. But, I would also colour those lines (top solid line was blue for the sky, middle corresponds were both green for the grass, and the bottom solid line was grown for the ground/dirt). This made learning the correct starting points and strokes much easier for the kids. I am so happy that the two of you are taking this task on! Well Done 🌟

I was a elementary librarian for 12 years before I retired in 2020 and when I first started that job i was shocked when I learned that the students weren't taught cursive anymore. My teacher friend, in the room across the hall was so aggrivated too that she started teaching her 2nd graders to write it everyday! School is so very different from when I was growing up. My two children thankfully had teachers who believed in the importance of knowing how to do this and taught them how. But, to be quite honest, when I would stop to read things in the hallways, I couldn't even read the students printing on their papers.

My great grandpa only had a 6th grade education..he could do anything and was a genius in alot of ways but he couldn't read or write. His wife my great grandma had to sign his name for him and write things for him. They lived thru the depression but were very well off bc of his other skills. We homeschool and we teach cursive so our kids learn to sign their name and read letters as adults, although my grandpa never really needed it to be successful. God has given everyone gifts if you use your God given gifts you will be fine in life! He lived to be in his 80s and my grandma was almost 100 when they past they left their son millions 😉 They were huge savers and always said if someone else made it I can make it too;)

I learned it in the 1st grade. If I see people print I fiqure they never learned how to write. A good example of dumbing down our children. It is a shame that you two obviously intelligent young women were never taught to write in cursive.On the other hand I can’t print. On job applications it will say Please Print. If I was to print you couldn’t read it. I always write everything in cursive. I am 68 years old. The way things were taught in school back then and now is like Day and Night. You can’t even imagine. My decision to retire early was in conjuction with cursive! I wrote a note to a coworker, she went to our boss, I was verbally reprimanded to be considerate to our coworkers who can't read cursive! Gave my notice the following week! Never looked back lol

You both have musical talents that that most don't have, not to mention being able to identify plants, flowers and rocks. You can't learn what you haven't been taught. I'm sorry your teachers didn't see the need you would have in the future to know cursive. Do you know if they require learning it now? It’s definitely not your fault! I was surprised awhile back when I found out they stopped teaching it in schools. Back in my day, we had a LOT of instruction on it, because it took a LOT of time to learn it! We literally practiced writing pages and pages of single letters (with arrows showing which way to write all the swirls etc) and then small words, etc… I think for a whole year or two. Both of you actually did very well for not having learned, your penmanship is good, and you are both so artistic I think you could learn it easily.🌼🌼🌼

Wow, it’s so weird y’all are making this video! 2 weeks ago I decided I wanted to re-learn cursive as a 30 year old and started making my grocery shopping list by hand instead of typing it out so I could get weekly practice. Left hand is more difficult. Teacher tried to change my brother to right hand. He was angry and still writes like a third grader and doesn’t care (50+). Poor girls only learned truth, faith, honor, love, and respect. People need to get right and don’t take bull. Thank you ladies be strong.🙏🙏❤️‍🔥👍

My daughter is 19, she has a hard time reading cursive and doesn’t write it either. Like y’all, writing in general makes her hand cramp. We all do EVERYTHING electronically these days. The schools here in Texas had all removed teaching cursive by the early 90’s in favor of teaching computer skills like keyboarding and basic coding. My only concern with this as someone closer to your parents age, is everything being digital feels more fragile. Paper copies can be kept in many places and everyone can write and put information on paper while digital stuff is all dependent on the electricity staying on and no operating system crashes. No pressure from here on y’all to learn cursive, but one day Mom, Dad and Granny won’t be here to read to you and by then your own babies will be asking you what an old family letter, handwritten recipe or historical document says. When you see cursive, if you can take the time, you might want to look a little more at the letters, even if you never write it, figuring out enough to read it might be a handy skill to have one day.

I said this was going to happen years ago with the generation of kids coming up. My son was double promoted from the beginning of 2nd grade to the beginning of 4th grade. That meant he missed 2nd and 3 rd grades. That's where they teach cursive writing here. I had to sit with him and teach him to write. The first day of school he was expected to write cursive when he had never had it. Him being the genius that he is, he looked at the top of the bulletin board when he got stuck. His writing was horrible for the longest time. He finally moved on into his cursive writing on his own. Good luck girls!

Awe! I think you did great. We started learning each individual letter (in third grade) and then learned to put it together in words. Also, everyone develops their own personality in their handwriting. My cursive looks a lot like Cory’s.

Glad to see, you are practicing & learning on your own. I homeschooling my granddaughter and I know there are things I didn't teach, like chemistry and advanced math skills. IMO, the greatest thing that can be taught is "How to learn". I was taught Geography in school and that gave me the desire to travel and see those places first hand. Penmanship is a skill that can be learned, like sewing, knitting, drawing etc. So don't feel embarrassed or poorly educated. Practice makes perfect & perfect practice makes for excellence. BTW, my grandmother used to undue all my stitches when she tried to teach me sewing. That would discouraged me to the point, I didn't want to even try. But as I grew up, I managed to learn how, though I do prefer the machine...which I taught myself. Guessing Kate is the ĺefty...you have a real creative brain!😊

I can read it, but I hate writing it. I went to school in the 1970's and the public schools failed to teach me THE VALUE OF CURSIVE. So while I can read it, I NEVER WRITE IT. It's supposed to be faster, but it's just sloppier, IMHO

I'm a senior citizen and I of course read and write cursive. I understand why it went by the wayside but I think its a crime just the same. With the increase of typing in everyday life I find I'm a little impatient using a pen to write cursive although I still do an excellent job. Handwriting was an actual subject on report cards. It was taught in the curriculum daily throughout the school year. Anyway, ladies, thanks for giving it the college try. You can master it if you set aside a couple of minutes every day. This was enlightening and fun.

I am a child of the 90's as well, and I have the same issue! You both did better at writing the months than I would have! Corie, I agree about the typing problem. The only thing that I write these days are words to a song that I am learning, because I still like it on paper and I don't like to rely on a phone when I want to practice. But in the last few years I have noticed my hand cramping when I write more than that... This was a very interesting video, thank you!

I wrote in cursive all through school and my hand writing is nothing to write home about. Katie, I'm left-handed also, and it was hard for me not to smear what I had written because the side of my hand was always dragging behind my pencil. I enjoyed this and all of y'alls videos.

Thankfully some schools are teaching cursive again because they realized kids were graduating and couldn’t even sign their signatures. I taught my children at home to supplement. Getting children to read historical documents is a good way to teach reading cursive.

Wow ! I didn't realize that cursive was no longer taught. That's crazy. I first learned cursive in the 3rd grade, a looong time ago ,( Harry S. ) and it was expected that you could read and write in cursive from then on, which of course I do. Present day students are being short changed in more ways than one. 😪

Let me tell you, I was taught how to write cursive and still can't hardly write or read it 😂 Most of the younger generation does not know cursive. You girls did awesome for someone who never learned cursive! ❤️ One thing I love about cursive is, everyone writes differently. It doesn't matter whether every jot and tittle is made perfect. If you can read it, that's good enough. You have the "grammar" of Appalachia 😊 It may not be "proper" but it is colorful and beautiful. God bless, beautiful ladies!

Public schools stopped teaching cursive when using keyboards became predominant. Don’t be ashamed over not being able to write/read something you were never taught, ladies. I was born in ‘71 and we were taught not just cursive, but *penmanship* all through elementary school. We had to pass tests on how accurately we wrote in cursive. 😂 But I eventually dropped cursive and adopted writing in all capitalized block letters.

I still write in cursive and people always comment on how beautiful it is. My niece luved her envelope and birthday card with her name and birthday wishes in cursive, so much so she is now learning cursive.

I never understood the keyboard thing, there have been typewriters forever. I took typing back in the 60's and still had cursive. The typing didn't really do me any good until computers though.

Depends on the school and individual teachers as well. I'm only 32 and cursive was only required up to middle school. But in high school, the chemistry teachers required all class notes, assignments, and essays to be written in cursive. So the first couple weeks of school that year, I had to practice everyday (1-3 hours) to force myself to be proficient again. This was in Long Beach, California. I write in capitalized block letters (for work) as well.

Even though I text I think today’s technology has made people lazy. You girls just keep practicing your individual letters and if you really want to write in cursive it will happen ( practice makes perfect ).

Currently some twenty one states teach cursive writing but with various intensity. Few have the time to teach the subject with any consistency and instead concentrate on computer literacy from a young age. Thankfully many of the old and historic documents can be found online in a printed version. I did learn cursive but use it rarely and for signatures on physical copies only. I can only hope some will view it as an art form and on their own learn it that way.

I know it was criminal they quit teaching cursive. Thank God they brought it back in Indiana where I'm from. We signed for it! To sign your name was our biggest issue for our cause. I think our public schools are failing to teach children the very basics of life. How can they expect kids to function in a world where they can't even read cursive, much less write it? It's like not teaching them the language written in this country. Don't get me started on grammar. It drives me crazy when people begin a sentence "Her and me are going to..." or ending it "...give it to she and I". You two are adorable! I'm not blaming you. I don't know what they're teaching kids these days. They have them for 12 years! I was really surprised to see that you write with opposite hands.

I learned to write cursive in the second & third grades, in the 50's. My grandchildren weren't taught cursive and can't read it. My daughter prints and she was taught cursive..lol. You girls make my day and are the first ones I search out when I go to utube. You make me smile 🥰 .The only person I know, who is my age that still writes cursive is my cousin. She went go a Catholic school and they taught very strict penmanship. You girls do well in what you do. You can't do what you didn't learn. What a wonderful topic! I have been a teacher for over 30 years. My first 5 years of teaching, I taught 1st-3rd grade. Cursive was taught thoroughly in 2nd grade (here in Canada back then, but not anymore). It's because of my university studies in psychology, brain development, and learning that I understand why learning cursive is important. When your hand is learning the correct pen strokes and negotiating the correct linking of one letter to another, your brain is actually creating new neurological pathways in your brain. Today, we minimise the value of writing by hand because of the perceived efficiency of computers and other such technologies. Unfortunately, what has been scientifically researched and proven but goes totally ignored today in schools is the fact that when your hand is doing the physical movements involved in writing (pen/pencil on paper) the remembering, retention, and longer-term learning (meaning the neurological pathways that are being created) are far more meaningful and longlasting. The other aspect of writing in 'longhand' that is crucial but overlooked is the fact that inevitably, one must slow down. Yes, I said slow down. I know that everyone today is in a hurry... to get where, I don't know. But the physically slower movements involved in writing longhand means what is actually produced has taken more brain-time and brain-power to produce. More recently, when I've taught high school English classes, my students find it amazing when I give them time in class to write by hand on paper. The process of writing: crossing out, scribbling in the margins, drawing arrows to connect ideas, using different coloured ink to show meaning, revising, editing, and revising some more always leads them to producing much more thoughtful, insightful, creative, and well-written pieces. There is a place for technology, absolutely. But, it seems that today, everyone is always in such a rush to hop on the band wagon of the 'new' and throw out the 'old' without actually giving any thought to its true value and benefit. Ask anyone who has ever done it or still does it, what it's like to write a letter in longhand to someone for whom you care deeply. Or what it's like to receive a handwritten letter from someone you love. It takes time, effort, and thought to do it. All of these mean that someone thinks you are worth that time and energy. How precious. Students often wonder and ask about the best gifts to get a teacher. My answer has always been the same. Write me a card, write me a letter. It's those heartfelt cards and letters that I've received and kept over these many years that are precious to me.

Well said. Agree 💯 AI technology is slowly going to replace art and anything personal. Our voices can even be captured, recorded and imitated now. These old skills need to be learned to keep our brains sharp to outwit technology and have actual keepsakes that can't be revised and changed depending on whatever else is happening in the world.

OK….. the very first thing I am doing since I just saw this video, is calling my daughter to make sure our grandsons learn how to write their name in cursive😊. In fifth grade, we had Mr. speaks as our penmanship teacher for an entire class period….Every day. I guess I did not realize that I have the ability to write in code if I choose not to let young people understand what I’m writing.😂😂😂😂😂😂

Penmanship is actually an art. That is why some people have their own style of beautiful handwriting. Some folks don't have it or just don't care.. If I'm not mistaking Alabama schools have started teaching cursive writing again. My 29 yr old daughter has beautiful penmanship but my 37 yr old son.. Let's just say when it gets cold he can't read his own hand writing... It's pure scribble..😂. Enjoyed the video!
