When I was in 4th and 5th grade, my classmates had small collections, with most cards being very obviously fake. I told them that they were fake and it was very easy to tell the difference, but it didn't do a thing.

I think the whole stigma behind fake cards has changed over time. I'm 25 now and can understand why parents of young kids would buy the fake cards over real cards both when I was younger and now. 15 years ago when I was first introduced to Pokemon TCG you were aware of fake cards, knew of some of the signs of them, but you often didn't care. There was almost a novelty value in a sense to have a Latios spelled Lation or a Pidgeotto that evolves from a Clefairy. We all knew how evolutions worked back then and were never deterred by a card suggesting otherwise. It had no impact on how we played or collected, back then, no one knew that a Charizard would be worth hundreds of dollars in 15 years. The main thing that I believe has changed the stigma is the fact that a lot of us who still play Pokemon after 15+ years all now have our own incomes, we can buy whatever we want, whenever we want, we're an entire consumer market that didn't exist on this scale 10-15 years ago. You didn't have 25 year olds who'd played the game their whole life who were also interested in TCG collection, as a kid you'd swap real cards for fake cards with your mates at Primary School and not even know it. Nowadays you won't see a 25 year old trading their $80 trainer full art for a kid's fake cards because we see the value, or lack of value in a dodgy replica. Whereas kids just wanna play the game, the monetary value of the cards to them is irrelevant, it's all about collecting your favourite Pokemon.
