It's correct in certain old English words to drop a repeated sound. That includes Turmeric, February, Wednesday. I'm just pointing it out because I think orthography and dissimilation are interesting. There's no need to give people grief over pronunciation (unless roasting Ian, lol).

blue_avocado I know it’s common for sounds to get dropped over time but looking at the origin of the word it is based of words where the “r” sound is present therefore before it got bastardised by common speech it would have been pronounced how Ian said it. We learn to pronounce it that way in Australia so that’s where I’m coming from. (And a quick google doesn’t hurt). I think a lot of olden pronunciations are bastardised into something easier because people get lazy and different accents can change the word. Eg. “twelfth”. I learnt to pronounce to “f” but a lot of people don’t because it requires more mouth movement. But I think the more you pronounce difficult words properly, the better you get at properly articulating languages that are foreign to you. That’s my take on it 😅 Edit: it’s also probably a generational thing because I know kids these days are even worse at articulation because everything’s let slide.

In the U.S., the first dictionary pronunciation is with one R sound. But it's ok for folks to pronounce things differently. We all know what everyone means, no matter how they say it!

We used to be getting so many new words in the English language but now due to laziness a lot of them are not being used or taught. The further we stray from the original ways of speaking the harder it is to understand older writings. Like how a lot of people have trouble reading Shakespeare nowadays. Also with people trying to learn English I’m sure the variations make it more difficult. But there are valid points for either side of the argument.
