Everyone reacts to the live version Elvis did in Vegas and it's too fast, the mood isn't as present. The studio version is better and closer to Mac's own rendition here. Mac was just adorable and really a sex symbol in the 70s, he was sexy for the same reason Burt Reynolds was, confident, talented and totally NOT full of himself. Both Burt and Mac loved self-deprecating jokes at their own expense and poking fun at themselves. The whole vibe of Hard to be Humble is Mac making fun of his sex symbol status. So hard to believe Mac's wife left him for Glen Campbell! Can you imagine!? Not to take anything away from Glen, but damn if I had Mac Davis I wouldn't be looking anywhere else!

Mac Davis didn't grow up in the ghetto, but a black, childhood friend of his did. That was his inspiration for this incredible song. There is an interview he did about it, here on KZbin. When they would take his friend home, he couldn't understand why his friend lived in an area so different from where he did. Elvis of course, really did grow up poor and maybe that is why he was so drawn to this song and wanted to record it.

I knew that Elvis Presley didn't write this song, even though I knew that his version of it was very popular but still, I had no idea it was Mac Davis who wrote this -and I was born and raised in Chicago in the 70s/80s/90s, and have lived here all but 5 years of my life. I remember Mac Davis' song, "It's Hard To Be Humble" (a satirical take on stars who let fame go to their head), and some other songs too, but I honestly had no Idea that he wrote this song, as well! Thank you for sharing this, and for your reactions to the song! Kind regards, and God bless.

I knew Mac Davis wrote it and it was inspired by his dad being able to provide a different life than his black friend's dad who worked at the same place. Not once before have I actually seen Mac Davis perform it! It is beautiful and I am surprised at how much easier it is to understand the lyrics when he sings it. Damn! Thank you both!!! This 💔🥺 song is about poverty, describing a child who can't overcome his surroundings and turns to crime, which leads to his death. It was the first song Elvis recorded with a socially conscious message. He was reluctant to do it for that reason, but knew it would be a hit. Mac Davis was the songwriter.
@ptournas
@ptournas 2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't reluctant to do it, but he knew Col. Parker wasn't going to be happy about it. He recorded it without telling him about it and neither Parker nor RCA Records wanted ti release it. The decision to record it was Elvis' alone. He knew it was contrary to Parker's always telling him to never to do a message song because it would offend people who disagreed with the message. Mac Davis said Elvis had to fight to get it released as a single.

Mac wrote this after being inspired by Dr. King and the fight for Civil Rights. He wrote about a best friend he had in Kindergarten. His dad worked with Mac’s dad. But they lived across town. He said he came over to spend the night and Mac went to his house. He said he never understood why the kid lived in another place. Why did the kid live in what he later knew as the Ghetto in Lubbock, Texas and why couldn’t they live where he lived. Anyway it was racism in the heart of the matter. If a 5 year old kid could see it was wrong, then why could the adults not see it. He wrote many other songs for Elvis and for himself like A Little Less Conversation, Memories, Stop and Smell the Roses, and I saw you had done his funny song Hard to Be Humble. ❤

The first Mac Davis song I heard was Whoever Finds This I Love You. I think it was about an orphan, It was a weeper, too. It was a bit confusing at first, because on the label writer credits, he was often listed as Scott Davis. Thus his song Watching Scotty Grow. The really best writers know how to do lots of things, dig deep into your heart as on some of these songs, but also dig into an occasional cute chart topping single, (One Hell of a Woman)and then turn around and make fun of himself with humorous songs, The really great songwriters seem to have all of this inside them.

That song reminds me of myself and my family. I left home at 14 and didn't go back till I was 17. I told my mother that I could starve on my own. In my 14 year old mind I figured she could feed the other 7 better without me. I was the youngest of 8. And yes I learned all that and drug use. I'm 66 now, strange every body said I'll not make it to 20. I swore no child of mine will have to lay in their bed and make a game by throwing socks at the windows and watching them stick.

Not only did Mac Davis write "In The Ghetto" but he also wrote "Memories" and "A little less conversation" also covered by Elvis. Other songs by Mac Davis, "Watching Scotty Grow" and "I Believe In Music". I might not have grown up in the ghetto, but when I left home and got married I found myself knowing what it's like to beg from door to door for my baby to have food and not know if I was going to have a roof over my head, come the next month, which wasn't much in the first place, it was made of block, no insulation, snow coming in from under the door, the only heat came from a pipe that stuck out of the wall near the ceiling between the bathroom and our bedroom, to warm up the rest of the apartment we'd turn up the oven and leave the oven door open, it was like living in a garage, in fact, the top of the kitchen wall was missing and if you could look over the top, you'd see a garage. Because of circumstances that I wish not to get into, there was no going back to my mom and dad. This song shows how desperate life can get.

Well, looks like we still have a few Elvis haters out there! With that being said, A writer of a song and, the sanger of that song are 2 different views here! Mac did do a great songwriters version of that song, it didn't go very far as for the sellig of it, he had wrote a few others for Elvis so, when he gave this song along with other's to Elvis, Elvis made it his own, just as any other singer would have! This didn't mean that Elvis was FULL of HIMSELF, he just knew that in order for it to become a hit, for Mac and himself---he had to put his touch to the song/song's. This is the reason Mac gave it to him, he knew Elvis would make it his own in a way that would make it sale and, it did! Mac was delighted when he walked into the bank with that cheak with Elvis' picture on it, and got to buy him a new Mercedes and a colored TV. Everyone knows that anyone that records a song, their going to put their touch on it. When you here Mac's version, you say; well that's Mac, when Elvis made it his own he put his touch to match his vocals so, that when you hear his version, you can say; well that's Elvis! Same songs, different version and, made both men happy! Now that's the name of that tune, that's what made the difference in the selling of the songs, bar none!

It's weird to think that his association with Elvis may have been the very thing that got in the way of major success. It may have also been his down-to-earth nature. ElvisWorld was replaced by BeatlesWorld in the 60s, and by latching onto a fading star, he too faded. My first girlfriend's father was in the music business, and so I got to meet Mac and a few other similar singers, but he was so normal he didn't seem like a star. It's like my friend The Funky Geezer once said, "You can't look like the roadies." Even though he would do the roadie's work in roadie attire, then change later. Mac may have been too nice for the industry. He sure could write a great song. Thanks for finding him. A dear heart. Love his other hit too. No idea he wrote this beautiful timeless gem.

Mac Davis was a great country singer, songwriter & actor. We just recently lost him in 2020. During his early career he wrote hits for Elvis Presley such as "Memories", "In The Ghetto", "Don't Cry Daddy" & "A Little Less Conversation". When he went solo in the 1970s his biggest hit was "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me". Other great songs were "Stop & Smell The Roses", "One Hell Of A Woman", "Rock 'N' Roll (I Gave You the Best Years Of My Life)", "Let's Keep It That Way", "Texas In My Rear View Mirror", "Hooked On Music" etc. Davis also starred in his own variety show, a Broadway musical, & various films & TV shows.

Although Mac Davis wrote the song I still like Elvis' version better. Elvis' is more soulful along with his back up singer. I especially like the live Las Vegas performance.
