We didn't expect an English Town in Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰 Nuwara Eliya

I visited Nuwara Eliya, a town famous for tea plantations and for being "little england", it has many English/ British names for their roades and houses as well as some English architecture. The weather was also very cloudy which made it look even more like England.
Nuwara Eliya is known for its temperate, cool climate - the coolest area in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya's climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, called Little England, was a hill country retreat where the British colonialists could immerse in their pastimes such as fox hunting, deer hunting, elephant hunting, polo, golf and cricket.

It was called " little England" mainly because during colonial times, it was a refuge for the ruling Brits from the heat of Colombo. Here they indulged in golf, horse racing & other recreational activities which reminded them of home. Otherwise when people mention the architecture, there is the famous post office & the Grand Hotel, which could be anywhere in England.

There are a lot of buildings built during colonial times by the British themselves. They called Nuwara Eliya ‘Little England, probably because the weather was closer than the rest of the country, and not because the locals thought this is what England looked like.

l think you are not in the correct place(little England)where you are staying is just a sri lanka local village)little England is full of luxury bunglows cottagers with beautiful flower trees roses anthuriams, canastion flower beds. in front of little England there is a huge organic vegetable garden or may l say a farm.MR. HARRY you must visit the correct place l feel sorry for you because you should see the high standard it is preserved for 200years by sri lankans afer English ruler have given back to sri lankans .If you dont know to find it you should search from google or youtube or ask from local police station for the map .and there is world brand tea estate call westwood near by damro estate as well .another wonderfuland charmingplace is nuwaraeliya grandhotel you might even have afternoon tea with cakes pastries, sandwichers with petit shorteats. well enjoy your tripe in the correct place .because l very sorry for both of you as you are in the wrong place. You missed "Little England" ☹ Type "Little England Sri Lanka" into Google and you'll be surprised. There's also a beautiful old British post office, and many old British buildings. When the British ruled Sri Lanka, they built a "little England" in Nuwara Eliya because of the cooler weather and the tea plantations there

18:13 that is a type of fig tree, called "Bo" tree in Sinhala. It is under one of those trees that Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha (aka attained enlightenment) in India, so Bo trees are common in Sri Lankan Buddhist temples. There is a Bo tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka (called Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi), and that tree is the world's oldest living tree with a known planting date (288 BC). Also, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was planted using a branch from the actual tree that Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment in India!

He Bro.. u have only been to the market of nuwara eliya.. u cant expect england or english architecture around the market.. u should walk towards gregory lake from the market to see the actual english architecture and houses where british governers lived during 1800s. Most of those houses and buildings are now converted to hotels. U have missed it and seems u have never done a back ground study before visiting..

Nice video as usual Harry. However I am hoping you did Littlemore exploring in Nuwara Eliya and we get to see more interesting side of Nuwara Eliya in your next video. In this video you only covered less than one km span in the center of the city which is not what this city is about at all. You have to explore more around the city outside the city center and the attractions to get more of idea to why locals call this place little England. It has become more touristy place recently and lost its British reminisce but you can still find some places shows what this place used to be like. Anyway nice video man. Keep up the good work!
