Sorry for the long-ish comment, but hopefully worth the read. Not sure how much you've been able to investigate the issue with the front drive, but here's some tips on locating where to look: Engage drive and turn fully one way and count the number of "pops" and if left, right or diff or transfer box, do the same with diff lock in. I suspect you have a shaft spline that is worn, possibly in the transfer box. If it's shaft in diff, you'll get it in and out of diff lock but at different frequencies as the torque builts up at different times, quicker with diff lock in. if no differnece, it'll be somewhere prop shaft/transfer related. When you properly investigate, look at inside where the shaft/spline is as well. It could also be the dog clutch on the front drive, not sure exactly how they work on that box, but suspecting it's a locking dog into the rear drive so if worn it may skip, Do you have freewheel front hubs? I'm guessing it doesn't. It will be a issue that was always there, you just haven't done enough in 6x6 to find it out. do the non invasive testing first, as may be obvious where the issue is and means a simple locate and possible fix. They seem to be designed pretty well. I think you'll be fine for most of the driving with the front disengaged, worst case is remove prop. it's a lot more capable than you will be making it do. RE starting issues at altitude, I'm guessing there is no electric manifold heater on the B30 engine. Cold fuel doens't vapourise well, so it needs something to warm it, I would have thought being scandinavian that it would have some form of cold start mechanism to heat the fuel, but it may not. Also your mixture needs to be compensated for the altitude as you have less air, so exccessively rich (and not vapourising), it might also be that you're combining the two issues on cold high up mornings so you're in effect too much fuel and not enough air. which is like too miuch choke. There is a simple altitude compensator for diesels with old rotory pumps and modern use the MAP sensor for fuel adjustment. Something to look into if you are planning more high altitude camps. As for Ski run, don't cross it, yes I think the C304 is very capable of crossing it, but it's jsut going to really annoy the skiers and probably result in some nasty injuries to them (the last thing they will be expecting is tracks into the slope surface). The best plan is always turn back if even remotely unsure, you're an overlander not an extreme rock crawler.. 😀 You are finding some awesome camp spots,

After lending my friends 4-camper in Christchurch and discovered the South Island I returned to my home country Sweden. For some good reason the algorithm showed me your channel and since you started your second build in Sweden with a Volvo: I was hooked. For the last couple of days I rewinded and have watched the last 30 episodes… I’ve done a 7 years long sailing and I could painstakingly remember all the work with maintenance of the old boat. You have done a fantastic job and even if I came for the build, I stayed for the laughs, views and great family feeling. Just make Ang say “mödd”, that will melt the snow all around you, so charming! Now building myself a stealth boxtruck, I will lend some ideas

Do you keep the Stromberg carburettors filled up with ATF oil? Just one centimeter below the top of the inner pipe so that the dampening piston fits, no more, no less. The B20 and B30 likes to suck in the oil as you drive and the right amount keeps the trottels calmer. Overfill and you get oil on the rubber membrane that swells up and make it less precise. I used to lift the trottles with one hand when I filled them up with a tiny bottle with a pointy "nose". The Choke should be adjusted to it's settings to let the engine have more fuel and slightly raised throttle valve. No use to push the gas pedal when cold.

Great video! Such beautiful scenery. Ever think of straping a gopro to Oakley and getting some "Oakley Cam" footage? Also as for your starting issues, I know nothing about Volvo engines, but I have belonged to a buggy club for over 25 years. Mostly all carbureted VWs from the 60s. We have an annual event in Big Bear CA (7,500-8,000 ft. Elevation). Buggies tuned for lower Elevation run rich up there. We've learned to put our foot all the way down on the Throttle while cranking the starter. Don't pump the Throttle, as this will flood the carburetor. But holding the Throttle all the way open while cranking allows more air to make up for the fuel richness at altitude. Hope this helps.

Looks like fun up there in the Pyrenees! You may find your starting issues is more to do with the high altitudes than ambient temps. Carb will benefit from a leaner mix at altitude (reducing the jet size in the carb). Advancing timing also helps. A pita, but more likely to fix your starting issues. Or - swing that diesel between the rails and be done with the old anchor :)

To drive on sheets of ice in dangerous conditions at the very least you should have studded tires. Then, if conditions are more treacherous (cross slopes, steep slopes, high risk etc) you should have chains to put on at least 4 tires...or better yet all tires.

It might pay in the long run to set up a self leveling system, there are some pretty good hydraulic units out there, and at the press of a button they level the vehicle, I was a commercial driver who drove a survey truck ( ex military 4x4X6 ) and this had such a system ( I have no idea what the makers names was as it was already fitted to the truck ( 20 tonne monster) it was loaded with geological survey equipment, but could also sleep up to 6 people in comfort, I had photos of it both static and in action, but unfortunately the PC and it's HDD were stolen a couple of years ago, and I have no back up. That thing had a high/mid and low range gearbox, 10 speeds, ( 1 low being a crawler gear, where you could actually step out of the cab, and just watch it pull it self out of deep mud, ) it also had a extremely heavy duty ( 30 Tonne) winch with ground anchor, which was a god send at times. The self leveling was superb, it could compensate for 10 to 15 degrees of inclination front to back and side to side, often we were parked with 1 or 2 of the wheels actually off the ground, ( with wheel chocks in place for safety), Travelling with this set up was amazing, the best 2 year contract of my life, I was saddened that I could not extend my contract due to family commitments, otherwise it would have been a 7 year extension to the contract. but it meant being away from a young growing family for all that time ( the money was fantastic, though I will say had I got no commitments I would have driven the whole contract for free( don't tell them though lol )

Discretion was wise. Ice has no grip; does not matter how good your tyres are. Even chains are sketchy. If you don't absolutely have to cross that ski trail, don't. And if you do, have a Plan B up your sleeve. What Plan B might have been I have no idea. To see your vehicle slide over the edge and end up on its side or even upside down is plain dumb. Very beautiful video. I’m from Barcelona. If you return to Catalan zone I recommend hiking from Queralbs to “Vall de Nuria”. There is a mountain train called “Cremallera de Nuria” and you can return with it (be careful it is quite expensive). You can continue and make tree day hiking that cross pinirineus. Day one is from Queralbs to “Vall de Nuria”. The second day goes to “Refuge de la Carança”. The third day cross “Gorges de la Carança” and arrive to France rail station of “Thues Carença”. It is possible to return by train to Queralbs using historic train called “El tren Groc” (only in summer) but the trip is like WillyFog travel and it takes one more day. It is possible to sleep at “Alberg de Nuria”. It is possible to sleep at “Refuge de la Carança”. I only recommend it at summer. I’m sorry but I don’t know if your child is so little to do that. No glow plugs as it isn't a diesel. The military used to hook up an external heater system to the coolant loop but that isn't practical. If we were keeping the motor long-term I would need to fashion some sort of hydronic system with the diesel heater or our hot water system but again it's just not practical at this stage. Cheers

Oh something to think about , If you get this gas engine running good and later on after you change to diesel , should something happen the diesel engine all you will have to do is put this engine back in . And not be stick and not have to put out a ton of money immediately to fix the diesel engine . Also you might be better to install a Chevy/Holden 250 straight 6 gas engine . I was in Europe this year a heard a lot of rumors about Diesel fuel being eliminated in Europe . A good running straight 6 with a 2 barrel carb or fuel injection , towing option camshaft , and electronic ignition , will outperform a diesel any day . And even though I am a big diesel fan , still a gas engine might be better for you . Just my opion .
