Enjoyed watching this intimate look behind the scenes with Joe B. It would have been extra special if the guitar's owner was able to meet Joe and tell her story. Best of all......It's a "Win - Win" outcome where everyone's happy. And I think it's great this old forgotten Les Paul has found a new home where it will have a chance to sing again! Thanks for sharing.

Would love to restore those PAF's, I don't charge for that, and never have. The measurement they got off it, means something is seriously wrong, it could be the pots are toast, seized up and rotted. The harness braid wire also rots and destroys the sound, and that guitar probably needs the braided wire replaced, judging by all the rust I see, but there's only one company that makes it correctly now. The amount of rust is also a big downer, the pole keepers could be nothing more than powder if its too bad. I've been restoring real PAF's for 20 years or more, plus authentications and my own replicas, the results of 22 years of reverse engineering in every part of them, with the aid of my mentor in the steel industry and the magnet wire I had run thru Elektrisola Wire Corp's labs. Stan Webb has my work, Mick Grabham, Steve Stevens, William Duvall, Dan Spitz, etc. etc. I've written for Burst Believers, Dave Hunter's PAF shootout, that I won, and many other magazines and website magazines. Probably the magnet wire is toast on those but maybe not. Uncovered PAF's get sweated on and the acid salt eats right thru the insulation on old PAF's, and it the number one reason they die that I've seen from personal work experience. Bad idea to leave them uncovered for that reason. If a rewind is needed they CANNOT BE HAND WOUND, or the character of PAF's DIES. Amateurs should not touch them. The other big problem is finding real 59 era magnet wire, because THAT is the biggest generator of old PAF tone, and frankly of ALL vintage pickups. The lab data on vintage PE is amazing and won't share with anyone. I've wound with vintage wire for years and finding anymore these days, its pretty much extinct, but do have a good stash of it. Here's one of many of my youtube videos showing vintage PAF's, against my replicas. Joe will do it right, I hope... Final note, I am the guy who did all the reverse engineering on vintage ABR1's with our group called "Four Uncles Restorations." We successfully brought back the only TRUE vintage ABR1 replica that exists. Several famous burst owners have them now. Visit my channel to that work in progress and the final product demo. So here is a demo of a 1959 PAF set with one double white and one zebra. The pickups were missing mounting legs, but were virgin working PAF's: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGKaiYRpi89jaLM

Thanks for the advice. I know Joe is restoring them with ultimate care and will soon be back on the guitar. Good tips though.
@f.duranleau44162 жыл бұрын
Hi! Interesting info! Why can't the character of a PAF be reached when it's hand wound?
@SDPickups2 жыл бұрын
@@f.duranleau4416 This is a complex thing. I put in 22 years reverse engineering vintage PAF's, because I had mentors in the magnet wire and steel industry and the use of their labs and the explanations from their top engineers and my vintage materials. Hand winding is death to PAF tone. Hand winding is what Leo Fender used becaue random winds LIMIT the the high treble peak frequencies. And that is why he did that, to diminish harshness in single coils. Perfect automated winding as USED BY GIBSON NOW AND THEN, creates a peak treble frequency that humbuckers NEED, or they become too BLAND. The amount of ferrous steels in buckers needs the help of a winding pattern to cut through what the ferrous components cut OFF. Hand winding is for single coils ONLY. Gibson NEVER hand wound anything in their entire history. Amateur hobbyists cling together to protect the fact that they can't afford to use a commercial winding machine to do precision, repeatable winds that are identical on every pass of the wire guide. They will keep claiming that its a superior winding method, BUT is is NOT for humbuckers. I did hundreds of winding patterns with a CNC winding traverse I built to test this all out. Gibson didn't invent some "magic" winding pattern. The PAF winding pattern is BY THE BOOK that came with their winding machines. The equation is simply using MEASURED O.D. of the wire used, versus the SPACE TO FILL on the bobbin.Each wind is calculated for the wire diameter and how many winds to FILL THE SPACE. Get yourself a vintage PAF, unwind it by hand using a counter to see how many winds they used to fill lateral space. Its that simple.
@f.duranleau44162 жыл бұрын
@@SDPickups Thank you very much for this excellent explanation!
@Gorilla.GuitarАй бұрын
didnt we also learn how they routed the start wires on some of the winders in kalamazoo?.. that it would affect the consistency of the left to right winding pattern or some such & thereby affecting the sound? you mentioned elektrisola.. as in Boscawen New Hampshire Elektrisola?

Not really since it is subjective. There are a few Burst's i would consider HOLY GRAILS! 😂 Don't get me wrong The "Greenie" is very special but there are others.

@@These_go_to_eleven_1959 Hi! Yes that's true... Like Jimmy Page's Les Paul is another "Holy Grail" Burst... Perhaps the real Holy Grail electric guitar is not a 'Burst... It might be Albert King's original 1958 Gibson Flying V... Like you mention, it's all subjective...

I have come to really like these early 60's Les Paul's. From what i could find on them they are essentially a "59" in every way except they were made in '60 instead of '59. Obviously the latter 60's have the slimmer neck shape but the early ones still have the fuller neck profile. and the later ones have the non fading paint. The 58's are sweet as well. Those three Years were the best for the Les Paul IMHO.

I couldn't be more stoked that Joe's grabbing that (I already saw him with it a while back, before this video, ,I knew this was that guitar)
