we build assassins.
a tribute to team taz.

ft. taz, ftw champion ricky starks, powerhouse hobbs and hook.
So my claim to fame is that Powerhouse Hobbs retweeted this video HOURS before turning on Ricky Starks, officially ending Team Taz. I had this strange feeling the end was nigh, so I posted the video only 99% complete on Twitter and hoped maybe someone would get a kick out of it. I tagged the members of Team Taz - not with any expectations or hopes. I woke up the next morning and Hobbs had retweeted it. Insanity. And then he broke all of our hearts.
Anyways, this video is a throwback to the period where I fell in love with Team Taz ie. the period where they struggled for TV time and I would have to suffice with a 30 second vignette every second or third week. Basically from Ricky Starks becoming FTW Champion (and Team Taz kicking out Brian Cage) to Hook becoming a singles star in his own right. Their is some recent stuff of Hobbs and Starks - since they were technically still calling themselves "Team Taz" - but I've only included Hook segments from pre-Revolution 2022 (no Hookhausen). For that reason, this video is light on "Hook the wrestler" and heavy on "Hook the moody youth who stands at ringside and helps Team Taz cheat in their matches".
Team Taz got me through some really difficult health challenges in 2021. To cope with everything I was dealing with, I escaped into the world of AEW. Anytime I was anxious or feeling overwhelmed, I'd throw an old Team Taz match on, or a Ricky Starks match, or watch an old episode of Dynamite. Sometimes, even as adults, we need that escape. And they were mine. I remember being alone in my hospital bed the night before I was to undergo some tests (that were going to tell me if my heart was failing - thankfully it was not) and being too anxious to focus on anything - so I put on Rampage. The visual action was too much to focus on, so I literally just listened to the commentary (mainly just paying attention to Taz and Ricky bantering) with my eyes closed. And it calmed me down.
I still can't quite believe it - but I actually got to meet Starks, Hobbs and Taz in Las Vegas during Double or Nothing week in May. And while I didn't get to tell them how much they meant to me (because I was unbelievably nervous) - and what they indirectly did for me - I did manage to squeek out that they were my favourites.
