Today we show you the city that stole our hearts Chiang Mai in Thailand. The city with the perfect mix of culture, comfort and adventure.
The first area to steal our hearts in Chiang Mai Thailand has to be the vibrant Chinatown. We love a good Chinatown and this one lived up to our expectations. Chinatown in Chiang Mai is a vast area that contains many shops, food markets, flower markets and even a stunning brightly coloured Chinese Temple. We spent a morning exploring the area and appreciating the lively atmosphere that the North of Thailand has to offer. One can also see the dying art form of Rickshaws here in Chinatown. Once a very popular form of transport around the city has now become hardly used or appreciated. Getting to see the traditional rickshaws was a nice added part of history to our morning walk around Chiang Mai Chinatown.
Throughout the city of Chiang Mai is the Ping River which holds a very important part of Thailand’s history. We walked from Chinatown to a bridge that takes you over the Ping River. Once the hub of the city’s transport is now a place of celebration and enjoyment. We enjoyed watching the fishermen, seeing the tour boats and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere that the river gives to this vibrant city in the North of Thailand. It was also the most lively place to be during the Lantern Festivals.
If you follow along the Ping River, you will come to the Ancient house in Chiang Mai which is the oldest none religious structure in the city. It is an amazingly well kept traditional house surrounded by a lovely picnic area and some cute little cafes. This area also become very alive during all the festivals with night markets and live music.
Next on our adventure was the Old City, an area in Chiang Mai that is probably our favorite. Once in the Old City you can see a moat and rather grand gate which was once used for protecting the city. The wall and grand gate is now a symbol of the past and the moat an enjoyable place to go for a stroll. Inside the Old City there are tons of cafes, shops and markets. The Old City is the perfect place to do a little shopping or just to take a book and read in one of the many cafes.
The food in North Thailand is rather unique and of course tasty. We had a famous dish called Khao Soi for lunch. It soon become our favorite Thai food. It was the perfect balance of spicy, sour and sweet with a combination of smooth and crunchy textures.
Just like any other place in Thailand also has some stunning Thai Temples. We spent almost a whole day exploring three unique and gorgeous temples. The first temple Wat Sri Suphan is a temple that is completely covered in silver. This Thai Temple has had many very different sculptures and art work on the temple walls that we have not seen before in other temples. It is defiantly a temple worth checking out in you are in Chiang Mai city.
Next we explored the Wat Phra Singh which has an interesting ground of many different temples. It was lovely to see all the lanterns setting up for the up coming Lantern Festival.
Our last temple was another unique one Wat Chedi Luang is a temple with a very different look to other temples in Thailand. It does not have gold, silver or jewels all over the walls but rather the simple look of brick.
We loved how Chiang Mai had many different and unique temples to walk around and that fact that each temple ground was not too busy.
Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand is doing a lot to create new modern areas that still showcase the history of culture of Thailand. One of these areas a river side night market that we found while driving around the city. It was a small little market with so much life.
Chiang Mai really stole our hearts and we can not wait to head back in the future very soon.
