Same here . . . I've directed the flooring guy at Lowe's in West Des Moines to Caleb's channel (after said he was really into restorations of old homes). You guys keep me motivated restoring my 1929 house this summer. . . .also delaying plaster repairs due to heat. Amazed by the before and after restorations. Its really a cost thing as there are 6+ patterns of wood around that window. So if had to replace it all i would have to get knifes cut for all of those patterns. At about $350 each for knifes plus the cost of lumber it starts to get pricey really quick.

Just a word from experience of using 2 part wood filler. Works great but if any moisture gets behind it to the wood, it will still rot behind it. Beware to seal everything around it when installing it or even put two part epoxy over the whole piece front, sides and back. Cheers

@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack If I might suggest - and you might've done this and just not shown it - hit what's left of the original wood with some sort of wood preservative before putting on the epoxy layers? There are very old/traditional solutions for this, I think the old copper solution brush on stuff (that is still totally available, I was using it last week) might be good. There's so much texture there that I don't think it'd create adhesion issues? I guess that's something to check, but with that much texture it _really_ seems unlikely. I mean, call me paranoid, but I'm from Seattle on the edge of the rainforest so it's an honest paranoia. xD

I'm curious how long they'll last! In my experience, exterior wood filler jobs have a tendency to fall off again within a few years, depending on a few conditions. Direct sunlight accelerates the decay fairly rapidly, I've had window fall apart again within two years or so.

I restored a Victorian home over many, many years in Hamilton Ontario where we live. Much smaller scale than your project, but very like minded with your approach to restoration. I do know and understand what it is like to put your heart and soul into such a labour of love. Due to life circumstances we finally sold our home 3 years ago. I left part of my soul in that house. Don’t ever get discouraged from setbacks. There will be many. Relish your time there. There is very little to compare with the satisfaction of bringing something like an old house back to life. I love this house! You guys are doing an amazing job. I love that you are so humble and kind about the gifts. My husband is a pastor and it is truly overwhelming when people do nice things for you. Sometimes, humbling as it is, we have to just say, “Thank you!” and accept the gift, because the giver receives a blessing as well in the giving. One KZbinr I watch is collecting the Patreon and other gifts to make a custom piece for his house and discreetly inscribing all of the givers’ names. The Phone -- late 40s to 1960 my father was a train station agent and an old wall phone of even earlier times hung in the waiting room of the station for passengers to use. Many years later my husband and I were backpacking in Jasper National Park in Alberta (Canada). Ranger Woodrow occupied a cabin across a stream from the campsite we were at. When torrential rain flooded our camp, he invited us in to dry our sleeping bags and drink hot tea. There on the wall was a phone exactly like the one from my childhood. He told us all the ranger cabins along 100+ kilometre perimeter trail, for emergencies. There was a single phone wire tacked to trees that we never noticed until after that memorable encounter. I am so glad you are able to make it work.

Wow that phone bought back memories of childhood in a Victorian country villa in New Zealand. My grandmother had one rather like that installed in their hall. The difference was no dial, as at that time they were on a party line. You checked first to make sure no one else in our valley was using it then hung up and turned the handle round then gave the switch board lady the number you want. Opposite the handle was another handset hanging from a metal loop. My Aunty used it to listen in to the conversation so there they would be both on the phone together. My home had similar curtain hooks set to the side of them with the hook facing away from the centre. The curtains had tassels with looped heavy cords which held the drapes to the side during the day. Thank you for letting us into your lives in such an intimate way.

Regarding the outer trims from the front of the house. Use your table saw and cut off a little on both sides, just half of an inch or so. Glue on fresh wood with polyurethane glue and trim the profile before applying the wood filler. It will keep water out, if water seeps in behind the wood filler the trim will rot away in a couple of years without you noticing it. Also cut a slight angle at the bottom so the water goes away. I usually cut 15 degrees. Use a really good impregnating oil before applying wood filler and painting, also the backside. In my experience this is the best way to go besides having new material custom made. It's quickly done and at no cost and can last for many years. I'm afraid that the way you do it is just a cosmetic fix that won't last for long and in worst case can cause damage to surrounding areas. Just a friendly tip.

Hi Caleb, I'm not sure if you had done it, but I always back prime/seal & paint all sides completely before replacing exterior wood pieces :) The wood lasts way longer & helps resist water or moisture wicking in behind and causing it to peel.

That Minwax epoxy filler also has a liquid wood hardener component that comes in a can. As long as the porous old wood isn't still damp/wet and it isn't extremely humid outside, the liquid hardener works quite well to give the filler a stronger substrate. I have used both quite a lot and have had issues putting primer over the liquid hardened wood. For pieces as porous as those bits of trim, I would recommend the liquid hardener be used prior to smearing on the filler because as someone else said, if water gets behind the paint, that old porous wood will soak in the water, rot further and pop out the filler.

I LUV the PHONE!!!! I run several rotary dial phones at my place. So you if your phone is not modern wired ..... I have a fix for you. Out of Australia they have the Dial Gizmo. Because you can receive calls on old phones ... but "pulse dialing" is no longer used on any phone system .... all use "touch tone" now only. This GIZMO will give you the capability to dial out. YAY!! And I run my phones over VOIP. ;) So there's that. Just WIRE all your phone lines into a central nexus somewhere (hopefully near your internet modem) .... hook up the Dial Gizmo inline along ANY path .... and you're in business. Good luck. I'd be fascinated to see how you implement your phone system. :)

Super episode I love the way you redid the wood I personally probably would have took it to a one person and had new ones made and that's cool that you're getting internet that should help out a lot and that's pretty nice of everybody to send you little things in the mail like that at the end I thought that was pretty cool I'll look around see if I got something historic maybe I can send it to you too thanks again guys keep putting out the good videos I'll keep on watching ❤️👍😀
