Did you know that the labels and glue on the cans and boxes contain cockroach eggs? That is why you have to take out and clean the cans with bleach and write what is and the expiration date before storing them. I hope it serves you!

Only just now have I discovered this channel. It looks like a keeper. I have subscribed. But there is a story I want to tell.We were coming up on 60 days since out last landfall out in the north Pacific and nearing the west coast of the USA. Suddenly the SSB came alive with a man on what seemed a work boat talking to a woman on shore. They were discussing provisioning the boat when the woman was heard to say her boy wanted to talk with his dad. I forget their conversation but it brought tears to my eyes to hear the young boy and his dad talk in such a happy voice. The child's laughter was an indescribable joy to hear. I shall not ever forget hearing that. This all to say your girl seems so precious and it is lovely how engaging she is. He squeal of delight when the kite was flying under the water just slayed me. Children are so precious and a blessing to us all. Such is the fruit of the parents so I say well done dad and mom. This all sounds sappy but it's the precious moments in life which make it worthwhile.

Congrats on achieving his awesome goal! That's a long way to go for any craft, but you kids have done it with class on your very own sailing vessel. Too bad you had to wait so long for the weather to clear. Seeing your food storage reminded me of way back when, the Cuban Missile Crisis to be exact. My folks were quite concerned that our country was on the verge of an all out war with Russia, so they came up with a get out of town plan. We owned an Islander 30 MK II and they stocked it up with all sorts of canned food for a long trip to the South Pacific. Mom sealed all of the cans with hot paraffin wax to protect them from possible rusting. All five of us kids were to pack a very minimal bug out bag and have it stowed aboard the boat just in case. Pretty scary times those were but cooler heads solved the issues. Just some old memories I thought worth sharing.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Edward. Times really haven't changed all that much. Different year, similar issues that provoke tension and thoughts of worse-case scenarios. Still, I try to keep to the bright side, even though I'm always aware of those "scary" thoughts. The world goes on, even when your detached and living in your own little world on your own little boat.

Another outstanding video, but as always your daughter stole the show. That being said you could continue and follow the ICW to the West Coast of Florida (Naples, Bonita Springs, Ft Myers Beach, Ft Myers, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Pine Island, all the way up to St Pete and then sail the Panhandle towards Pensacola and keep going to New Orleans and Texas. SW Florida has some beautiful sailing. Sanibel Island is called the shell capital of the world. Pine Island and in Charlotte Harbor is call the fishing capital of the world. When or if you go to Ft Myers Beach you will find SW Florida Shrimp Boat Fleet. On down from there is two of the nicest marinas; Salty Sam's Marina and Moss Marina.

Just a friendly word of advise from a 30 year cruiser.. Please remember to always lock not only your engine to your dinghy, but also lock your dinghy when you are in shore anywhere, and to your boat while at anchor too! Definitely not with a cable either do to it being very easy to cut!!! Get a chain, trust me it is worth the hassle. Also never leave the engine on the dinghy during a storm, because it is too easy for the engine to go under water...ie dinghy flips, or fills with water. Take care of your taxi, because rowing really stinks especially in the Bahamas with any type of current. Also before you leave make sure to stock up on extra plugs for your outboard, get extra fuel and oil filters (lots) and at least one extra set of spare belts for your engine. Definitely don't forget a spare belt for your auto pilot too, no body likes hand steering all the time!!! Last but not least extra fuses and tons of batteries for flashlights (they rob you blind in the Bahamas on all of this)Same thing goes for beer if you drink it, you will want to stop drinking it when you see the prices over there 40/60$ per case! God bless, safe journey to you all!

i really enjoy your videos, either you learned very fast or you really have visual talent. editing, music, info....everything on point, great job, very entertaining! tambi seems to be doing a great job homeschooling molly, i love the idea about the journal (did i get that right?)! maybe molly will become a writer some day, wouldn't that be awesome? :) molly is condensed cuteness, she'd make me smile even if her name was trump. that of course could never be because she is so well behaved and friendly! the only thing that could make your videos even better would be a pet on the boat, i was thinking koala bear or one of those tiny ponies for molly, huh? #mollyneedsapony have fun and keep vlogging, greetings from europe, austria :)

Don't know if u have heard this, all ur dry goods can store much longer bug free, grains, flours, beans and the like.....put a couple of bay leaves in the bags, no weevils. And cans, strip those labels and glue off,bugs live in there and u will have pest problems, don't forget to use sharpie markers to ID stuff, this will be accelerated once u get into higher humidity and heat......pain in da butt, but less of a pain than getting run over with roaches....great vids...

Great info on fuel use! Did you also keep track of nights at anchor versus tied up to a dock? I can't recall if you ever were in a marina. Lastly, how often do you have to replace the compost with three on board? Many thanks for your great videos. --Jim

That's easy. ZERO nights at dock. ZERO nights on mooring. 100% anchoring. We empty the composting head about every 4 weeks. Not bad at all. It's practically dirt. Except for the most recent addition - which is, in fact, a turd.

Weird thing is that I've tried 3 different belts! They all fit similarly. Just not sure what else to try other than machining a deeper groove onto the pump structure itself.

When you're at the parts house, just ask them for the next smaller sized belt. The size is usually coded into the part number. Here's a good reference for what I'm talking about: www.vbelts4less.com/Measuring-Belts_ep_46.html

Rhode Island to Miami $363 I calculated it would cost about $125 in 35 mpg car Cheaper, but I couldn't take my house....

Car is cheaper in sooooo many ways! Much more dangerous too. All in all, for nearly 3 months of boat travel, $350ish for fuel is rock in'! We talked to the owner of a big sport fish once. They held 2200 gallons of fuel, and they burn over 100 gallons an HOUR. Craziness.

wow. I knew a car was likely cheaper, but I didn't think that $350 was that bad... I thought it would have been more.

Hola from Puerto Rico Ben, Tambi, and Molly. Now that you're heading to the Bahamas, I recommend you to access "Sailing Trio Travels" Channel. They travel in a Catamaran, and if you get the chance to contact them, I'm sure they could give you tips on places safe to go in the Bahamas. They travel with other Sailboats too, They're like a travelers extended family. Wish you the Best as always and Safe Journey!

We should cross with at least 30k from the North. That's what we keep hearing. KIDDING! We'll definitely not cross with North wind. Thanks for watching!

Two things to say. Firstly, I really like your editing style - I've watched most of your vids, and have been subscribed for months, and, as an English person, with typical home-counties views, you seem, from your accent at least (yeah, shouldn't judge a book by its cover) to be what I would call a redneck (no offence intended). But your sense of humour and your video production skills completely throw me. Something isn't as I expect it to be and I can't work out what or why things seem different from how they are. Put it down to old fashioned colonial prejudice. Whatever, I think what you're doing is great, really, really great, even though, to my ears, you sound like you're knee deep in the bayou and shouldn't know a GoPro from Play-Doh. The other thing I wanted to mention, I was prompted by your passage preparation checks, was John Vigor's 'Black Box' theory, if you don't know what that is, as a cruiser you really should, if KZbin lets me post a link it's here: johnvigor.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/the-black-box-theory.html, the work you did on the engine and Tambi (sorry, don't know correct spelling - never met a Tambi in deepest darkest Surrey or Sussex) did on the victualling all contribute to your black-box credit. I think my black-box it quite empty, I am reminded to begin replenishing points, though my travels are nowhere near as adventurous as yours. Thank you for sharing your journey, you are a beautiful family and I very much enjoy sharing in your journey.

OK, I don't want to be critical here but! Your wife took a long time to count five cruise ships. "There are One ... Two ... three ... Four .....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Five cruise ships there". It sort of sounded like she was confirming the number of cruise ships against the number of fingers on her hand. Maybe it's nothing. We just don't know yet but you might want to be a little more observant. Just keep your eye on her. I'm just saying, when I was in the military, I had a buddy that displayed the same ... uncertain confidence. Sure enough, he was kicked out of the military when he was caught eating urine cakes in the officer's latrine. Makes ya think don't it.

I actually increased the tape speed by 4x during that segment. Originally, it took her a full 3 minutes to count to 5. Take it easy on her. She did, after all, think that 2+2=blue during her early mathematical years. Im going to be in trouble when she doesn't reads this. If there's not an episode 32, this is why...
