Hi from across the pond. Some years ago I took one of those out on a test ride which done exactly what yours done at the end of this video, it turned out to be a fuel filter. As the shop didn't stock one, I flushed it through with carb cleaner in the reverse direction, this shifted loads of muck out. This was done as a temporary measure whilst a replacement filter was ordered. This hack cured his fault and bought him time till its next service when I replaced the filter.

Had that exact bike, same color in pristine condition with only 8k miles 4 years ago. I got it In crank - no start condition.. I added a large amount of sea foam into new fuel after draining the old from the tank! After a couple battery charges from cranking and cranking I finally got some spit and sputters that turned into running for 5 seconds and dying then firing right back up and dying... let it sit over night came out the next day hit the choke and it fired up and idled great! Riding was a different story because it would want to bog down as soon as you would start letting off the clutch and want to die, I had to flint stone it a bit to get it to take off on its own! After riding around the block a few times and reaming on it “(slow rpm pull) like you had going on in the video” it started to finally wake up and clear out more and more! After 2 days that bike went from not running to running crappy to running great all due to 1 can of SeaFoam! I now run that crap in every bike I own every fuel up! It’s proved itself to me! If you have not used it.. which I’m sure you have, go on and throw some in the tank!

I had an '83 Honda Magna at one time, but it was the V65 VF1100 version. I bought it in 2012 from a guy that said it belonged to his dad before he passed away from cancer. Maybe, but a few miles down the road it began to overheat, so I shut it down and threw it in the back of my truck. When I got it home I took a closer look and found that the cooling fan was not kicking in when the coolant temp rose to the proper temp. Eventually, I just rigged a switch and manually activated the fan when the temp got up a bit and that worked like a charm. Then I got the tires replaced and fixed a few other small items and took it out for a spin. Worked very well and very very fast! I never did get the speedo to work, so I just mounted my smartphone to the bars and used that. I used it to commute 35 each way in Southern California traffic for a couple of years. I did eventually give it up, but I remember one time having my son follow me in his Audi Quatro and he clocked me at 130 before he backed off. I estimate I got up to at least 145mph. I sold it eventually. Biggest and fastest bike I've ever owned. First shaft drive bike as well - that took a small amount of getting used to.

Sitting in a bar with some friends, when someone said that it was starting to rain....well, rain at 30 degrees freezes as soon as it hits the ground, or your bike. It was 36 miles of freezing rain on my '05 Softtail. between 15-20 mph the whole way, using a borrowed bar towel to wipe my goggles every 2-3 minutes. I actually thought about stopping at a filling station to get under the awning but figured that since I was already soaked, frozen and suffering to just push it all the way home. I'm in my 70's and have been riding since 1967, and this was probably the worst ride of my life. If I ever found myself in that kind of situation again, I think I would try to leave my bike in the bar and get a ride in a car....

I own a Honda CG125 for more than 5 years now, and I often find myself in that situation when monsoon season starts here in the Philippines. Usually, the situation begins when I am away from home and then rain suddenly pours down hard. I have to brave it because it takes a lot more time for me to get in my rain gear than simply wearing a helmet and chucking the contents of my pockets into my top box. But that's also how I learned how to survive a wet road, paved or not.

Once, at the beginning of winter, like those days that start kinda hot, but at night gets really cold I went out to meet a friend at a bar. We stayed for a couple of hours, I had a glass of wine and when we said our goodbyes it was like 37°F outside... I had left my house wearing light gloves, an autumn jacket, nothing that could really prepare me for the 30km ride back home at midnight haha! I soldiered on, but when I got in the garage I couldn't open my hands nor feel my fingers. Took me some minutes breathing hot air in my hands to get them to work. And being honest, this is what makes motorcycling so good. Sometimes you just prove yourself that you can endure a bit of rain, cold, or whatever else nature's got on you just so you can have that nice feeling when you reach your destination.

I'm currently in the process of getting my first bike, an 82 V45 Magna back on the road,. It's been a frustrating project without any help or prior older vehicle/any motorcycle knowledge to back me up but I'm getting there. I work on newer cars, it doesn't really translate. So far I've rebuilt the carbs, I've identified a bad stator, put a new battery in it, did a lot of tests to try to find anything that isn't working correctly, and our first test ride it was hanging at 5500 RMP like in the video. It also required 4k revs and gently feathering the clutch in and out in order to even start moving or it'd stall pretty quick. Hasn't been on the road in a month or so, and air/fuel mixture screw actually vibrated out and caused a no-start. Found the valves were way too tight and am adjusting them right now, then I need to remove the other 3 screws and add the o-rings I forgot to put in them, aka why they were loose enough to come out. Here's hoping I have it running good in the next week or so!

A friend had a V-65 Magna back in the late 80s. He went on a few cross country trips on it but always had problems. Probably any hi-mileage V-65 will suffer from these same defects. I'm not sure if these same problems were issues with the V-45s

I bought, fixed and rode my first road bike that was an 83 v65 magna. It was cut up, so I made it my own. Not a bad bike. Pulls hard when they run good. The slides not opening all the way could be some varnish on them making them want to stick, an air leak on the top side (near the cap) stopping it from building enough vacuum to pull the slide up, or a plugged passage in the carbs.

I really enjoyed this episode. I don't know if you remember, but I picked up an '82 Yamaha Virago 920 last summer. I got a good vibe from the guy, he had trouble with the carbs which I found is most likely from over spraying paint inside the tank. There were pieces of paint flaking off in side. He gave me an extra tank which had the same problem. I haven't had time to work on the bike because I've been working on 2 apartments. The 1st to get ready for the people in the other apartment to move into and now finally finishing up the 2nd for me. It's amazing how some tenants can screw up an apartment. Every door needed some kind of work. Paint had been spilled on one carpet and just left. Luckily I was able to get most of the paint out using paint remover. Also, in my apartment there is an entry room outside the apartment where I Will hopefully work on the bike. Only problem is its on the 2nd floor but where there's a will there's a way and the landlord, a good friend, actually suggested moving it up there as he is a long time bike rider and has a 2003 anniversary decked out Harley. I learned a lot watching the guys working on your carbs, luckily I only have 2 with an extra set. Thanks for sharing.

Chris Gabbert- it's faster in 5th, 6th is an overdrive and the bike can't redline it. If it could it'd go some 173mph or something (don't remember where I saw that, something about production speed record I think). I have a '84 v65 magna, and it's a great bike. I agree with Michael, easy to ride because you can hang below 4,500 rpm all day and still be faster than cars on the road. Heck its torquey enough I've started in 3rd and beaten cars (it was a 2000's Honda Odyssey but it felt like he was standing still)

Very nice! My very first NEW bike (not my first ever bike) was a 1983 V45 Magna. Yeah, I wanted the V65 but it wasn't in the budget. In the end the V45 was an awesome bike! Nowadays everything I look at seems to be a step backwards. I mean it had shaft drive, liquid cooling, hydraulic front brake and clutch (no cables!) and she could fly! :) I really liked having a fuel pump as well. No more fuel petcocks... Oh, and a low-fuel light instead of just having to flip to "reserve" when the engine started dying. LOL Man, I had a lot of fun on my V45!

EDIT:FIXED so to make a long story short.. my estranged father i just met a few years ago, wanted to give me a motorcycle(i'm 30 now). i was estatic! 1982 gs650. brought it home, fixed the gas leak myself. fixed the head gasket leak myself. changed almost everything simple and standard. ran great! this bike is everything for me that i missed out on with my father... this is the bad part. someone clipped the spark plug caps (boots) off the other night for whatever reason. so i tried fixing it by adding a ghetto fix. the plugs are sparking but i cant get the bike to turn over and run now. any advice? anyone? i have to get this bike going again, it's a part of that gap i had missed with my family. (I found the problem and fixed it.)

Too easy... See those big circle things on the top of the carbs. Underneath there are rubber diaphrams that are probably dryrotted and cracked. This is very common when your slides aren't fully opening, unless your bike isn't getting enough air through the filter which I highly doubt.
@Trevinator19904 жыл бұрын
thats why i absolutely HATE diaphram carbs!
@polly_sacharride4 жыл бұрын
I'd bet it's the tiny air inlet to the top side of the diaphragm that's supposed to equalize pressure between there and the main body of the carb. If it's plugged the carb will have to fight against increasing pressure the further the slide moves up. Either that or the caps aren't installed in the right orientation. Which will have the exact same effect as that air inlet being plugged. I found out just how easy that is to do while rebuilding the carbs on my own '83 V65.

I own a V65 and I can get that up to 90mph just on the freeway on ramp. Of course i was laying flat on the tank when I do it. I saw a KZbin video of another Magna that was also gutless. It turns out they had a bad ignition coil and were only firing on two cylinders. Even though the engine was running smooth. It was only on two cylinders.

@navypatriot1016 I guess I was thinking about the fact that the V-65 was in the Guinness book of records for the fastest production motorcycle for that era. So yes, by the time the V-Max came around it was a monster that would out run the V-65. But a 'pig'? Come on now.

I learned to ride in Hawaii on an beat up Suzuki TS 125. Used to make McDonald runs. It was only a couple of miles, but the clutch cable was broken and we all smoked way too much pot to even consider fixing it. Clutchless riding may in traffic just may be the best way to learn to ride - if you survive. I was hooked and ended up in the Suzuki dealership. Started out testing the little GS400, and worked my way up to the 750 - then had to try the 850 because it was shaft drive. And of course, a 1000 wasn't much bigger - so that's what I ended up driving off the lot with. I was on a sub at the time, so before we flew out to meet the boat, I dropped the bike at the dealership. They removed the engine and shipped it off to Vance & Hines, and it came back an 1100. Also went through the transmission and undercut the dogs for crisper powershifting. Switched carbs to Mikuni smooth bores. Never dyno'd it, but it broke 160 on H2 according to the tach.

When does he mention if it a 750cc (V45) magna (80hp) or a 1100cc (V65) magna (115hp) ? I would just get that said instantly. This must be the V30 (500cc) Magana at 50hp. The V65 can still beat most cruisers today.
@thechillhacker4 жыл бұрын
He mentions several times it should be 80hp - hence, a '83 VF750C (V45). The V45's can also smoke just about anything on the road, with a good carb job, tuning, and possibly rejetting - you know, basic shit for a carbureted bike. V4 supremacy. I don't even think they made the V30 in '83

A little tip for Honda Shadow Riders that I learned the hard way today. My throttle was sticking so I laid it up for about a year awaiting a carb overhaul and subsequent massive mechanic cost. Today, We put in a new battery and a new set of plugs, lubricated the throttle linkage and cables a bit with spray lube (not WD 40). It's running very good now. SO, although we are going to do a carb overhaul, DIY style ... We learned that It is a good Idea to replace the four spark plugs about every 10,000 miles on these bikes. Make sure you have a proper socket for the plugs.

My first bike was a 99 Magna. Still have it. When I got it, it would run great in warm weather, but it would run terrible in the cold. Absolutely would not idle either. Once you got it running, you couldn’t roll completely off the throttle or it would die. It was so frustrating trying to keep it running. Carb rebuild and bigger jets fixed that issue tho. Now it’s an absolute blast to ride. Runs great. Sometimes I’ll go a few weeks without riding it and start to contemplate selling it. It really does sit more than it gets ridden. But then I’ll ride it and think “there’s no way I could get rid of this bike”!

Back in my 30s, I had a V45 Magna I rode for a couple of years. I thought it was the greatest bike in the world. Then I bought a 750 VFR, going from a cruiser to a sport tourer, so I didn’t ride the Magna for about a year. I remember getting back on the Magna, thinking something had loosened in the steering head because the bike was all over the road. Then it dawned on me that I had been riding a fair handling bike for a year and was now on a cruiser, known more for looking cool rather than handling. I sold the Magna soon after but have fond memories of cruising down the highway with my legs and feet in front of me, my back straight, listening to that seamless V4 engine. Good times.

Bikes that sit THAT long, usually can do with a carburettor rebuild. Old fuel that sits in the carb fuel veins gets all gummy like enamel, which also clogs jets. I wouldn't be surprised if some of that loss of power was from partially blocked jets caused by 13 yr old fuel enamel. Slide needles also get their profile eroded over time, which will also affect the slide lift rate... so the needles could do with replacing too. Other than that, very cool to see these beautiful old Honda v-fours still getting around 👌 Wishing you and yours remain healthy and happy best you can during these challenging times 🙏

I had a 1981 Super magnet and I really miss it. There is a very finicky little valve in between the gas tank and carburetor which is operated off of the manifold vacuume. You can't get them anymore so don't bother trying. What I did was just removed it blocked the vacuum hose and used the petcock to shut off the fuel when it was parked and never had any problems. I'm 99% certain that is the problem you are having

I've had a bunch of these... both the ignition switch and kill switch are underrated for the current (and inductive kick) this thing puts out until they don't work at all. Ignition switch is easy to find new. I just jumper'd the kill switch since it was less safe to have a bike die unexpectedly. I personally thought the carbs were easy (compared to the nightmare it looks like), do the full rebuild with good hardware, balance them out, they will work. Oh, and repack the gear shift input shaft with heavy grease. Water gets in, rust happens, then you round off the 2 & 5 synchros and they kick out forever.

This kind of bike is so good, you don’t spend a lot of money and nobody wants to steal your motorcycle. This is reliable and then you buy some tools to fix it. Of course, you spend two or one week when a mechanic can do in one hour without buying a lot of parts but you drive a motorcycle.
