Really happy to see you guys visiting Kolkata during Durga Puja... The guy explained well, but one point he miss judged was that the first Durga Puja in Kolkata (there are much more older pujas outside Kolkata... Kolkata was not the place where Durga Puja started) was done in Barisha's Sabarna Roychowdhury's house which is older than Sovabazar Rajbari's pujo by more than 100 years. Still the way he explained was wonderful... the job he is doing to make you guys understand the Durga puja in Kolkata. Much appreciated that you guys came....

He is quite right. Barowari puja started from Bagbazar Sarbojonin. Before that it was limited to elites in their homes like you mentioned Sabarna or Sovabajar Rajbari. This was the first time that masses got together, raised money & organized the Puja for public.

I really love Bengali literature, movies, music and food my top 10 Bengali songs are the following: 1) Ankita Bhattacharya: Komola 2) Shironamhin: Ei Obelay (Bangladesh) 3) Sanjib Chaudhary: Ami Tomake Bole Debo (Bangladesh) 4) James: Tor Premete Andha Hoilam (Bangladesh) 5) Oishee: Nizamuddin Auliya (Bangladesh) 6) Arnob and Sunidhi: Shondhtara (West Bengal and Bangladesh) 7) Fossils: Ekla Ghor 8) Anupam Roy: Darun 9) Somlata Chaudhary: Mayabono Biharini 10) Mohineer Ghoraguly: Prithbi Naki I also love following Bengali cinema and my favorite directors are following: 1) Satyajit Ray 2) Mrinal Sen 3) Ritwik Ghatak 4) Tapan Sinha 5) Rituparna Ghosh 6) Humayun Ahmed (Bangladesh) 7) Tareque Masud (Bangladesh) These are some great restaurants in Kolkata like: 1) Peter Cat 2) Mocambo 3) Kasturi 4) Arsalan Biryani 5) Nizam Kathi Roll 6) Aminia 7) Indian Coffee House 8) Cafe Mitra 9) Dadar Hotel 10) Chittaranjan Mistono Bhandar Kolkata is pretty affordable, 5 star hotels only cost Rs 5000 a night. Also for me Kolkata is one of my favorite cities in the world. I even have made 2 playlists of Bengali music: One is Bengali top 50 and second is Top Bengali rock songs. After seeing your vlog, I remembered the Bengali movie Praktan and the song Kolkata with Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta. I watch Bengali movies with English subtitles.

Thank you guys for visiting Kolkata, especially during Durga puja...For every Bengali, it is a time for happiness, reuniting with family and as a whole enjoying some good time. This time around a lot of people stayed slightly away from the festivities due to some recent horrific events and joined the protests against that. Even then, event like Durga puja brings in a lot of people, even from other states- thus the massive crowd. As much as pandal hopping and enjoying that experience goes, the other beautiful thing in my mind is the way Bengalis treat Durga puja as a whole. In most cases, especially Hindu festivals, you would see complete surrender and devotion to Gods and Goddesses. However, for Bengalis and Durga puja, it's more like welcoming your daughter to your home and loving and caring for her, taking strength from her. This feels more surreal when you experience "Baran", a ritual that mature women do to bid goodbye to the Goddess by feeding the goddess sweets and the like. Any way, great video, hope you enjoy your rest of the trip! Stay well.

You know its not only a festival to us we are so much attached to this festival emotionally that sometimes we can't handle the "Dashami" (The last day of 10 days) and we ended up by sheding tears. Durga is not just a Deity or goddess to us she is like a girl who comes to visit her own house from the heaven , from her in-laws house. So we cant bear the pain sometimes when she has to return on the last day. She has to return to her in-laws house and we will see her again next year, its very hard for us to wait so long. Anyway please come next year again. In 2025 it will start around last week of September. And Thak you so much for showcasing our heritage, may god bless you.

It was fascinating to watch our beloved Durga Pujo through a foreigner's eyes! Enjoyed the video a lot! ❤ For Pete's wondering at 14:21 thought I will share my own experience. I used to live in such a neighborhood. I am talking about 2000s, I was in school that time and there were a lot of restrictions regarding how long I could stay out, how far I could go, also I needed permission for going out etc. However during Durga Pujo I was allowed to stay out as late as 1am, no question asked. So I think it also symbolised as freedom to the little me. I had neighbourhood friends who I could only meet those 5days, and together we would go for pandal hopping to the nearby pandals, but for most part we stay in front of pandals. Our neighbourhood pujo was small, meaning there were never too many people. There would be chairs and stand fans in front of the pandal, and you would see different age groups sitting in different circles and hanging out. We like everyone else used to sit in those chairs and hang out and ate a lot of chips, cold drinks, phuchka & rolls. Next morning we used to wake up in the sound of music coming from the sound box in front of the pandal, and I used to get ready to hangout with those friends again. I used to also go for pandal hopping to the famous or semi famous pandals with my family but we used to try to wrap it up by noon in order to avoid the crowd. Not only me, my other family members used to hang out around pandal with their respective neighbourhood friends as well. While a lot of families enjoyed the neighborhood pujo, a lot of families used to leave for vacation. Things has obviously changed a lot now, however I hope I could give you an idea. P.S.: In order to fight the sweat, next time try buying those chargeable hand held mini fans. They are inexpensive and a life saver in the Kolkata weather.

Pani puri anxiety!?! Actually, I feel you. I wanted to have it again so bad and couldn’t muster up the courage without Soham’s expertise. Makes the burn of our first trip to India without visiting Mumbai sting extra. Thanks for appreciating the ad read :) Happy coincidence as that was take five. Oh and if you wanna sign up at the link…. 😜😜😜

I went back to Kolkata after two decades for the Pujo. I am Bengali. I wasn’t ready for the crowds, but the artwork was simply outrageous! To imagine they do it for the ten days to just dismantle after is just unbelievable

Nice family, you got and your child is super cute :) Soham of calcutta capsule did a fantastic job of explaining the festival, especially his lines about analogies and metaphors that we HINDUS associate our religion with and celebration of it. All the best TO YOU GUYS. TAKE CARE. LOVE TO YOUR SON.
