Great shot of the special alpine weta. This place has better alpine plant biodiversity than the last video of yours I saw. It would be helpful to know what region each video is taken in. I spotted Celmisia Mountain daisies (3 species), speargrass, Ourisia flower and also NZ Eidelweiss plants . It would be good to include some close ups of the various alpine plants in your stories. NZ has a unique special alpine flora. One reason our alpne plants have such interesting and colourful leaves is that they are evergreen so have to be specially adapted to live in the winder. In Europe a great majority of alpine plants die off in the winter so they only have uninteresting soft summer foliage.
@southislandriflewalkers5545 Жыл бұрын
Yea we really should get more close up/ shots of all the plants/insects. We’re hoping in the future to get a wildlife lens for some more close up shots. Haha yea unfortunately we don’t really give away our spots

Look into some of the other ways of setting up a fly, often the only location available can be a whole lot better with one of the other fly pitching methods

Haha, you gota be kidding Raddy, cutting the toothbrush handle down to save weight lol Another awesome video, with spectacular scenery and nature shots as well as game footage Did anyone stop and pick yiz up? What's the reasoning behind not just carrying a folding saw and capping the skull(s)?
@southislandriflewalkers5545 Жыл бұрын
Hahah yeah the toothbrush was a bit rich coming from the guy who usually carries in two cookers and a redbull... Yeah we got a lift, bloody good bastard of a farmer from the area. Prefer having the skull for a euro mount, don't really like the skull capped look personally

Hey boys How many different sleeping air pads have you guys tried ? Keen to hear your opinions on what you find works best
@southislandriflewalkers554510 ай бұрын
Hey there, we've tried a few different types and brands over the years. We've found the thinner inflatable sleeping pads are pretty uncomfortable if you don't have a good flat campsite, which is a lot of the time in the country we cover. The ones that inflate out to 2-3 inches usually offer more comfort, they can balance out if you've got clumpy ground. Exped are pretty cost effective and have a 5 year warranty, I've had to replace it under warranty twice because it's started leaking from the seams though. From what we've heard thermarest is bloody good but comes at a higher price point. We had big agnes air matts for a few years, they held up well. Chris is trying out a Sea to Summit one now as well, seems to rate it but hasn't put it through the ringer yet 👍

How much of the meat did you pack out?
@southislandriflewalkers5545 Жыл бұрын
In all honesty mate just the backsteaks and the fillets. With the scale of the trip and the size of our packs we couldn't manage much more. A bit of a change from our usual efforts, more of a trophy hunt this one

Excellent walk, shoot and video. Surely you can get a friend to pick you up for the cost of some back steaks? P.S. my old man 50 years back used to cut his toothbrush handles off when he went out shooting….we thought he was nuts. Be warned!

When I was there in 1982 commercial meat hunters were shooting out of helicopters. one place I went on a river on west coast of the south island, there were choppers every day. Kind of discouraging. Spend a few hours hiking up river then up a gut and a chopper would come by and fly over where I had been and was going in 10 minutes. Is this commercial meat hunting with choppers still happening?
@southislandriflewalkers5545 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's still going on, not as much nowadays though. The meat market isn't where it once was, rips your undies when you see them after all that effort though!
@GR-yf1cm Жыл бұрын
You should do some video on butchering the pig or deer you kill would be really good to see something from start to finish .... at least the effort was rewarded👍

We're planning on doing one eventually, just need to find the right time to do it. In all fairness though we aren't experts, just know how to do a rough enough job 🍻

We were hesitant to shoot as we didn’t want to spook any nearby deer, never know what’s around!
