I LOVE opossums. They're normally docile and don't hiss. We have many in our neighborhood. They come up to the back sliding door and hang out with our cats. Our cats will hiss at other cats who come to the back yard, but they just lay there and watch the opossums.

Raven, to additionally answer your question on 10:00, in Florida, you know, where Florida Man resides, they dont always hire the correct people for certain jobs such as this one, and unfortunately, you do come across people like that who wouldnt know how to properly treat an animal, even though, that is exactly what their job is... It sucks but Miranda is right in assuming the worst in people, from time to time.

Please start making noise before opening the door to let an animal out. The opossum was hissing because it was scared! They will often tense up or "play opossum " when scared. Plus it running would've given your dog an opportunity to hurt it. So it did what it thought was best. Most animal control people are not nice to wildlife and I hope it wasn't killed. If you need help with wildlife call a rehabber. All you had to do was leave it alone and it would've went on eventually. The person you called apparently knows nothing about opossums. They don't just eat bugs. They eat dead stuff, mice, snakes, as well as fruits and veggies. I feed all wildlife on my porch and they get along with cats and everything. Please go learn how to keep wildlife safe and live in harmony with it. Also people already hate opossum so you are just adding to it saying you fought one when it didn't do anything but sit in a bush.
