We Found a HELL PIG! Our RAREST Fossil Find Ever! | Florida Entelodont (Daeodon/Dinohyus)

This was one of our rarest finds of all time! An incredibly rare Arikareean HELL PIG (entelodont) from the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene of Florida, along with a bunch of rhino material. Terrestrial fossils from this time period are incredibly rare from Florida, with only a handful of sites ever found. This site has the potential to help teach all of us more about the prehistoric life who called this place home.
As special as the fossil finds in this adventure are, it is still only one part of what makes days like this special to us. We are naturalists and fossils are only one part of the way we experience, enjoy and study nature while we are outside. We also smell it, taste it, listen to it and touch it, the way humans have done for hundreds of thousands of years. Doing this causes us to slow down and really appreciate everything around us. It's amazing how much you actually miss if you're in too much of a hurry in adventures like this, or in any other part of life. It is important to slow down, as often as possible.
In any case, we can't wait to get back out to this location and uncover more mysteries that it holds! We have clearly only scratched the surface of this location, and we are convinced that it may tell us much more if we continue to study it. Expect this to be part of a series on this location/site. Hell Pig Creek!

Thank you for contacting UF. That is an Entelodont canine. That site needs a paleontological field evaluation. Places like this must be protected and curated for the public trust. You are a true custodian of our natural history, thank you. I have never seen a Cyprus tree that wide in Florida, I thought most of them were cut down.

I have a simple question: How many times have you been able to donate finds to the Florida Museum of Natural History? I've been sub'd for a while now (and recently to Bri's ... I feel ashamed that it's so recent, having tried to remind myself to do so for as long as I've been sub'd here - I truly enjoy and respect Bri's art / sculptures, and photography ... I just get lost in the art, and forget ... love it! [very jealous of your talent, young lady]), and I've noticed that on a few occasions you've mentioned that what you've found is 'rare' or at least not 'found' in quite some time. And if possible, any updates you get from them, if you can share with us - your couch-participants.

I applaud your dedication, your consciousness and your joy. I, too, donated my collection of over 150 fossilised fish skulls, bird and reptile bones, hundreds of crustaceans (crabs / lobsters) and shark teeth, collected over years from the Eocene London Clay to the Lapworth Museum, University of Birmingham, UK. I found an incredibly rare Hyracotherium jaw, a new species of Eocene crab, Cretaceous chalk ammonites, eel skulls, all now in the British Natural History Museum. Most amazingly, a 450,000 year old flint, post-Anglian Ice Age, "Clactonian" hand axe made by Homo heidelbergensis in my back garden, now in the British Museum. It's where such finds all properly belong. It's humanity's heritage for everyone, not my treasure to gloat over. I just love what you are doing. ATB.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say people’s finds belong in a cardboard box in the basement of a museum(which, like it or not, is where 99.9 percent of donated stuff will go) instead of where they can enjoy them.

As a geologist with a passion for paleontology I must say your video was so impressive. Beautifully done. Your attitude towards collecting and submitting important finds to professionals both inside and outside of a academia is noteworthy and to be highly respected. I appreciate your excitement as I too have stumbled upon amazing ice age mammals in northern most Alaska and even more rare upper Cretaceous dinosaur material from deeper horizons at the same location. It definitely gets the heart pumping with joy and excitement. Keep up the excellent work.

I would love to see wild orchids. I appreciate your zest for learning and knowing... formal school is useful for some things, but true learning really happens when you seek it out, when you make an effort to know something you didn't know before, even if it costs you (not just monetarily but in physical effort or taking the time to learn so that you know what you're looking at when you're out pursuing knowledge). I can feel how enthusiastic you two are when you're out on a hunt, and it makes me feel excited too. Thank you for taking the time to share your expeditions with us.

Thanks for the very nice comment. I am a huge proponent of lifelong learning. Everybody should find something they find interesting, and explore it to the extent that they can. The more you know about a topic, the more interesting it tends to become (at least to me), and there is something very healthy about learning and discovering new things.

I am SO glad to hear you Donated those fossils to the State University, far too many people feel that they need to keep these things especially if they are rare. but I live in Canada, VERY NEAR the Tyrell Museum of Paleontology in the badlands of Alberta. Here Fossils are not legitimate to be bought and sold and it is not legal for the average person to dig fossils if found, but we are encouraged to call in Paleontologists to dig the fossils and Alberta has a wealth of large land mammals but I am also of the opinion that common fossils should be able to be owned by people since there is little to no more information to be gleaned from them, but the law here is the opposite of what it is in the USA. Especially if it is found on Crown Land (Federal Land in the US). I am so pumped that you found those entelodont teeth and tusk, that must be a once in a lifetime experience for you! A bucket list find, if you will. But you are still very young, and you have lots of years ahead of you yet so who knows what the future holds by way of paleontological finds. I hope you can find tons more bones, perhaps in the North of Florida or into 'Bama to the northwest, you never know, You might find some large animal skeleton that hasn't been found yet or more hell pig in that new "Site" of yours. Did you tell the University of the location? Keep your eyes downwards and focused on the rocks!

This was absolutely amazing!!! And so exciting to find such a rare fossil! Your philosophy about fossils is great, and congratulations for your donation to the museum. Please continue doing these in depth videos, and ones on the flora you find on your explorations. I enjoy it all. I've been watching your KZbin videos for a while, but this is the first time I've commented. The whole thing along with the explanation of your philosophy has brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in South Dakota and was able to collect Eocene fossils from the Badlands formation with my high school earth science class. We also had petrified wood and belemnites on the ranch where I grew up. Now I live in Indiana, and we can collect Devonian fossils here... Brachiopods , horn coral, and others. Still hoping to find a trilobite in these formations! Keep up everything you are doing! It's wonderful viewing, and helps keep me inspired to get out and hunt, even though I'm 76 years young!

Campfire recipe from my late dad.: In a medium pot place your green beans ( sliced in half or thirds) add a can of Tinned tomatoes, one chicken/vegetable stock cube, half a teaspoon of dried chopped or ground garlic ( or chopped dried onions) , black pepper, herbs and 1/4cup olive oil. Add enough water to just reach the top of the beans. Bring to boil on the coals and simmer until the water has reduced so it becomes a rich thick oily tomato sauce that coats the beans. Great as a side dish with steak and mash or on its own. Make sure you have plenty of crusty bread to mop up that delicious sauce and oil ❤ My dad used to use this recipe when camping rough and substitute the young tender still curled up bracken fern fronds for the beans and serve with damper bread cooked in the coals …

So freaking cool! Congratulations on your find! I have no idea why but when I was a young child, I collected all sorts of weird stuff, a normal young girl would probably run away from. There is a world out there and it’s BIG enough for all of us to explore it. Also a special Thank you for Bri for showing young girls that they can get out there and explore!

I am shaking too! Lol. I Love this stuff. You are so lucky to get to do this. I think I would be truly happy if I got to do something like this, even as a hobby, but to be able to do it for a living. Priceless You kids have the right attitude. I wish more people thought like you guys. Knowledge and education are getting a raw deal. This is the only country where learning another language is somehow not good. People like you need more funding for sure. Why shouldn't you do what makes you happy? I had someone try to stop me from arrowhead hunting. He didn't think it was a real thing until i talked him into going with me and he found the first one of the day. Then he was hooked.

Super exciting video!!! Hell yes to the hell pig!!! All the other cool finds too. Yes those were Paw paw fruit. They're really good but only stay ripe for just a day or two. Definitely recommend trying those! You guys have to get Derek and Kyle to this spot! Probably many more amazing things to be found!

I love watching your excitement, and listening to your amazing knowledge about everything, the butterflies the flora and the fauna, of wherever you are. Florida seems like such an exciting place to live. I've seen others find shark teeth on the beach, how awesome. Thanks again to you all, Chris, Bree, and dad....for the video today.
