William Dun (1792-1861) was a Scottish minister and mathematician. Born on July 22, 1792, in Scotland, he became known for his contributions to the Church of Scotland and his work in mathematics. Dun served as a minister in various parishes and was noted for his scholarly pursuits, including mathematical research and education. He passed away on May 5, 1861. His contributions, particularly in mathematics, were significant during his time, though detailed specifics about his works may require further historical research.

The hand holding the key is the Dun family crest. Their motto is Mecum habita which means Dwell with me. The Dun-Waters family eventually moved to England and settled in the Okanagan, British Columbia. There is a Fintry blog from October, 2022 that explains a bit about the family. In the blog, the writer states: This estate was owned in the 18th century by William Dun, J.C. Dun-Waters’ father. He built a castle (Craigton House)…….. with extensive stables but never lived in it, preferring to live closer to the village in a smaller house. The castle has since been demolished and the stables now converted into a beautiful house in which (an) eccentric gentleman lives with his five cocker spaniels.

Hello from the USA, Escapade! I found that William Dun's family, now collectively known as the Waters-Dun family, ultimately sold the estate that the Dun Tomb is on and moved to Canada, settling in British Columbia. The estate that Dun built but never lived in was sold but still never lived in. I have no idea why. It ultimately fell into disrepair and was demolished. The current owner of the land restored the old barn of the estate as a house and now lives there. It is private property. The family that moved to Canada built an estate there now known as The Fintry Estate National Park. They named it after the town of Fintry that William Dun grew up in and served as minister. Fintry remains the closest place to the tomb. The Estate publishes a letter, called The Octagon. Its November, 2022 letter describes in detail visiting the tomb and Fintry, so that may have been the last time it was seen before you guys went in. They may know more about Dun there if you wish to find out. The tomb building itself was originally a small church on the estate but, like the estate, fell into disrepair. When William died, it became his tomb, along with his family. It was renovated in the late 1800s-early 1900s. That's all I could find. Y'all take care!

The Macdonald family became tenants of Craigton, also known as Craighouse or Castle Craig, in 1762. The final Macdonald in Craigton, the retired Donald Macdonald, died in 1900. In Scotland this isn't considered old. There's like 2,000 or more castles in Scotland. So places like Historic Scotland and National Trust don't care. Old is like stuff built before 1800. Historic sites are like castles, abbeys, ect. Historic Scotland doesn't even have enough staff to keep their ticketed sties open all year.

Often, such huge sarcophagus would be built in place with the tomb built around it and the coffin, usually wooden, put in last, the iron inner sarcophagus and ornate lid suspended above until afterward, then lowered and sealed. The people in the floor may have been put in anytime after the tomb was built, even before the main tenet was interred. I assume that that is not a graveyard or cemetery but the grounds of a Great House, there seem to be no other graves in the area and Laurels were quite popular with landscapers of the 18th century for Great House scenery. I can't believe William Dun would be forgotten like that, but it appears he did make plans for that eventuality.

Damn but I'm good! as soon as I saw the fence, and then the entry gate into the mausoleum, I guessed mid Victorian. . . And yes that is a stunning bit of castiron, I agree it probably was painted when new, most likely the same colour as the stone work of the tomb. You are doing your ancestors a bit of a disservice though, mid to late Victorian was the epitome of the foundryman's skill, they had the tools, I don't think we could do work like that today, at least not in a timely manner. And gawd when I saw the ring I was yelling at you not to touch it . . .

Absolutely mind boggling!!! Definitely Bram Stoker vibes🧛🏼‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧌, or JRR Tolkien even. The sarcophagus is beyond description. The empty crypt is kinda disturbing I must say (sorry but I think I’ve read too many vampire stories lol). I think the key on top of the helmet is some sort of heraldic symbol. The presence of “mantles” surrounding the helmet suggests that it’s associated with a family crest or possibly a professional guild. Love, love, love these types of explores. I used to do paranormal investigations at abandoned cemeteries and I don’t need to tell you the kind of vibes those places have lol! Thanks to you both for a beautiful and eerie video❤

Were he a knight we'd see the prefix Sir to his name. There's a pic of the Dun family house from that era in the Craigton archive. The hand on the helmet with a key in heraldry denotes religiosity. He was a devout believer in the resurrection, further evidenced by the money spent on the preservation of his mortal remains. Cast Iron artisans were ten a penny back then. The Dun family of Craigton were considered to be regular middle class. If they lived in London they couldn't have afforded a tomb like that.

If you add "of Craigton" to your search terms (William Dun of Craigton) a lot will come up

Terrific find. I wonder why the ring was just left outside the coffin? Presumably they might have taken this off the body and got spooked

I've been on Ancestry, there's a few William Dun's from Scotland. If I can find anything I'll let you know! Looks like a baronet.

This mausoleum is so steeped in Victorianism, revivalism of a then, 150 odd years ago, romanticised past! It speaks of vanity, decay and yet persisting to exist and rot for many decades, if not centuries. The stone (marble) tablets become unreadable, the pompous tomb is covered in rust. As I mentioned below or above, this William Dun is difficult to fathom, while his remains obstinately loom in the thickest of woods and his newspaper still is being issued daily under the name it has had in his day. And the crypt beneath appears to be empty. W. D. designated it to the burial of descendants of whom no-one went. I wonder whether any descendant has visited the place or cared for it for a century or more. Very strange.

Do you ever have the historical societies contact you about places like this and say, "Hey, thanks for showing this because we forgot about it but now we're going to clean it up and protect it."? Anything like that?

Guys; always take a small brush with you (like you get with a dust pan) you'd be amazed at how by lightly brushing you'd be able to read most Inscriptions you thought illegible! Thanks for sharing this Video! James Coltart Waters.

I think your tube in the wall is a ventilation vent. They always install them inside of Cripps and tunes because of the fumes that still come off of the body.
