I agree! I like seeing the artifacts in the context in which they were used. We already have so many mining museums and they don't need more artifacts. These artifacts can stay where they were left.

@JohnCompton13 жыл бұрын
Just wow! Also I believe you were right about the hoist working like a ratchet. Probably pulled the loads up much like one for safety and to help the mule from feeling the entire load. Just a guess. There is a channel called Underground Birmingham and he explores a lot of the old coal mines in that area. He has found entre mule pens in some of them. Tragically he stated sometimes the mules would go blind from the total darkness after awhile. Great stuff as always....

I'm not a fan of removing stuff from mines but that winch has got to be preserved. What an awesome video!
@MinesoftheWest3 жыл бұрын
I understand the idea behind that, but I don't agree with removing things from mines and I'll explain. I'm sure a model of this pump exists out in the 'wild' in a museum or similar. So what makes this pump so rare is the fact that we found it exactly how it was left, in the exact place it was used. It is so fascinating is to see the context in which this equipment was used. Thousands of feet underground, to dewater a decline, we could even see graffiti from the pump's operators. You don't get that experience in a museum...
@martinlund95243 жыл бұрын
@@MinesoftheWest I think some stuff belong there. but if the mine is soon to be closed off or collapsed. i think that it is ok to remove stuff. But then it would end up at a place that people can enjoy it.
@jmarsh33473 жыл бұрын
@@MinesoftheWest I can totally support your reasoning. With everything left as is its sum is greater than the parts. I guess you have to balance the concept of preservation and its evils with facing the loss of the artifact altogether..

Really cool mine explore. 7:57 My best guess is CONTRACTORS PEART MFG CO BUFFALO N.Y. But I don't find any info on a company by that name. I'm not sure it's actually a "horse whim" is it? Isn't the drum on a whim vertical rather than horizontal? I think it might be a "horse windlass". I could be wrong.
