There's a bunch of enraged "rock-lovers" ad "experts" here in Italy that deny Maneskin the status of "rock band". Apparently there's a vital distinction not to be missed between bad rock - which doesn't count as rock - and true, good rock - usually the one those experts listen to in their free time.

I love it when y'all do quantitative pop culture analysis! I wonder if the heavy representation of really recent songs in the top ten most rock has anything to do with how readily people can call the details of the song to mind. If a song is recent enough for me to mentally replay it in my head with some accuracy, I may be more likely to notice the snarly guitars, intense vocals, and drums. If its old enough me to basically remember themes and melodies, the specific genre elements may stand out less. Drift in definitions of genre seems like a good hypothesis too, though. As someone who listens to more contemporary metal than the average person, I think classic metal basically just sounds like rock.

as someone who's favourite year is 2007 and is a huge rock and metal fan.... i feel like it was a long time coming lmfao also your final point about rock in the 90s and modern rock is super interesting! because maybe this also portrays how we all thought of bands as having to play rock back then, even if it wasn't rock? or that "lighter" or more poppy rock genres are being phased out for heavier sounds at the moment? who knows, but this was a very interesting project to be apart of!
@Pavlinka__ Жыл бұрын
That was definitely interesting point. I personally always had a tough time telling rock apart from pop but for me I think it was influenced by my parents, because I only ever listen to what they listen to and my dad is a metalhead I suppose, so I only ever consider rock songs if they have some classic metal kinda undertones... but then I can't really tell metal apart from rock unless its a black metal, idk, music is hard, whoever came up with the idea of genres?? don't like you! In my word there's only songs I woo to, and songs I boo to. Although I suppose that would be hard to list on spotify.

The rock/metal question is an interesting one. While you can't have a pan flute solo in a rock song, you can definitely have that in a metal song. Metal also overlaps with other genres in different ways than rock. For example, the folk/techno song "Shum" (Ukraine 2021), which was not considered rock in your survey, has a lot of metal sensibilities.

You also have to consider how countries choose songs to send: if their local viewers choose or how the public broadcasters choose which songs they present to their viewers. Chris Harms from Germany‘s Lord of the Lost mentioned in an interview that the public broadcaster NDR opened up the genre „gate“ from pop (aka „suitable for radio“) this year. That’s after quite a few years of barely phoning it in after Lena‘s big win…

I know I'm a year late but, it's not my fault, i simply didn't stumble into this channel before this year Anyway, the fact that Georgia 2014 Shin & Mariko - Three Minutes to Earth wasn't up for survey is wild to me. Going by the general survey results I reckon it wouldn't have reached the 50% threshold on account of having a fairly soft touch, but objectively, that's a progressive rock song. Honestly the reason that song feels so weird in general is that prog songs like it generally use 6-10 minutes at least to work through all the shifts they want to do and that one crams itself into three minutes. Still rock as hell though
