We're at it again! CFA owner and paleontologist, Ashby Gale, explored some of the larger dredge islands in Charleston to collect more fossils for our Patreon supporters. (Visit patreon.com/chsfossiladventures and join the Great White Shark tier or higher to receive some of the fossils we found in this video.)
These dredge islands are a mixture of Oligocene through Pleistocene sediments, dating 30 million to 11,000 years old. We collected teeth from the megalodon lineage, false mako sharks, giant threshers, great whites, and more during this epic hunt!
Once we resume in person tours, we'll start offering our Dredge Island Adventure, so that our clients can tour these beaches with a paleontologist, and discover more about the fossil treasures that Charleston has to offer!
Want to start finding fossils now? Head on over to our merchandise page and order a 3 lb or 10 lb box of "Shark Tooth Sand" loaded with literally hundreds of naturally-occurring fossils! Shop here: chsfossiladventures.com/shop
Fossil-loving family? Preorder A Beachcomber's Guide to Fossils, photographed and co-written by Ashby Gale. Available to purchase through our website, fossilsABG.org, as well as Amazon: www.amazon.com...

That little grackle was so curious as to what we were up to! Sadly, it probably is a learned behavior from other visitors feeding the birds...

Nice finds! Do you put anything on your teeth to make them good? I cleaned mine and the still look dirty and dull.

Thanks so much! Other than a quick rinse with freshwater, we don’t treat our teeth with anything. On particularly tough specimens, we’ll employ a toothbrush, toothpick, and maybe a little mild soap. What type of locality are the teeth coming from that don’t clean up well for you?

She was a very good fossiling companion! Unfortunately, her behavior suggests that many people must feed her whenever they visit this beach.

Do you license or a permit for finding shark teeth? I ask other KZbinrs and they said no you don’t need one.
@CharlestonFossilAdventures
@CharlestonFossilAdventures Жыл бұрын
Hi AS, thanks for your comment! The answer is a little more nuanced than others may have you believe… In SC, you do not need a permit to collect along our beaches and shorelines as long as collection happens between low and high tide. The moment you collect from a navigable waterway or beneath the low tide mark, a license is required and no tools are allowed. And as with *any state* you MUST have written permission from the land *owner* to collect on private property. Permission granted from a construction worker is like asking a restaurant employee if you can sell cookies in the parking lot. These rules only apply to SC - they vary state by state.

@@CharlestonFossilAdventures Thank you for answering my question. I really like your videos and it’s really cool how you finds those shark teeth out there. I do have some, but I can’t tell what some of are. I might have to buy your book online. Also I might plan a trip to go to Charleston to find some shark teeth.

Are there specific beaches that are better for bigger teeth
@CharlestonFossilAdventures
@CharlestonFossilAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzanne - great question! Finding productive beaches is all about understanding how the fossil material washes up (or out) onto the beach. Keep your eye out for inactive dredge islands, as these are usually productive if in a locality with the right strata. We talk a bit about this in our Shark Science Week video, so definitely take a look at that one if you haven’t already!

Charleston Fossil Adventures, LLC I live in Vero Beach, FL. Can you explain what an inactive dredge island is?
@CharlestonFossilAdventures

Basically these are spots where sediment was pumped up onto the beach from another area.

That's awesomeness. I'm a 💯percent beach goer. Growing up going to Westport Washington. My grandpa and his brother's were able to purchase land in Westport Washington. The family's property became a major part of our lives. Had many families come to the area for a family 🫂 reunion 🫂. I, in that many years have never seen a single 🦈 tooth. You have a great eye for them. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ love the video. Maybe I'll be able to find one now.
