From the Morning Press, 06 May 1957: Lancaster Marine dies in Coast auto crash: May 5: Marine Cpl. Kenneth C. Shanks, 20, from Lancaster, PA died Monday in a Hospital yesterday from injuries received in a one-car accident 14 miles north of here on the Death Valley Highway. Patrolman Paul Jorgensen said Shank was a passenger in a car driven by another Marine, Donald A. Fling, 21 of Denver Colorado, who was also injured. The majority of these vehicles were disposed of off the side of the road. If you'll notice a lot of them don't have drive trains in them. I noticed a few of them that had the heads taken off of the engines and no Interiors. Not even seat frames. With this rugged terran nobody would go down and be pulling whole engines apart and taking drivetrains, engine blocks to try and get them up that hill.

Easy, the overturned Mopar is a '69 Dodge Dart. The front grille gave it away. The last car is a late, 1960s or early 1970s Oldsmobile. The one with the roof cut off is a 52-54 Ford. The station wagon is a 1959 or 60 Chevrolet. I think the car on top of the Chev might be a late 1940s Oldsmobile.

@REVERSE ROCKET TV It's on Hwy 14 at Cameron pass. The area where the cars are said to have down is near The Crags Campground. Google maps shows a almost 90° turn with a cliff going up on one side and a cliff going down the other. The guardrails were installed in the late 80's so what's left down the hill is prior to that.

It's amazing how long abandoned cars last in the arid desert. In my country, where the rainy season begins every summer, in 20 years everything would have turned into a rotten mass of metal. My father told me the story of a relative man who was driving his new tanker truck on a mountain road 30 years ago when it fell off a cliff. Fortunately, he survived by clinging to a tree branch, and his tanker truck crashed down a cliff into the woods, making it impossible to save. (The tanker was empty and did not explode.) After that, the truck was never recovered and is probably still abandoned deep in the forest to this day. If I know the exact location where he got into the accident I'd love to find his truck!

@@SlavicUnionGaming If I were to search the truck it would be easier to try in the winter when the vegetation is dry. That's not a big enough job to use a helicopter. 😅 All I need is some tools to remove trees and grass! However, someone may have already found it, disassembled the truck and sold it as scrap metal, and it is expected that it will be in the same state as the wreckage of the Titanic, so recovery is impossible.

There's a river up in western Maine which I camped alongside for years. One spring we were up there after a major flood stripped a lot of soil and trees on the opposite bank and there are a bunch of really old cars across the river. There were at least two Model Ts and a late 1920s Chevrolet, laying on their sides and upside down but pretty intact. There was also a mid-1950s Oldsmobile, crushed like it had been flipped, but the mint green paint was still shiny. I asked in town and it said the cars had been buried along the river bank as rip-rap to prevent erosion and been exposed by the recent flood. The next time I went back the cars weren't visible: maybe they added a new generation of clapped-out cars from the 1960s and 1970s as an update. (There were certainly enough available in backyards and behind barns up there!)

Really cool video, that 55 Chevy is in fact a 210 two door, it came with a 265 V-8 with 2 speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Not sure if it had the original engine or not, if it came with oil filter it would have been mounted on top and I could not see the return line. So if this is a replacement engine it would have the oil filter casting on the bottom of the engine starting the 56 year. Now GM had a lot of left over parts from 55 and did use them in some of the 56s including the motors. I could write a book an book you all. Now if a wreck has its wheels the inside lip of the wheel will have manufacturers mark and date, my 55 Chevy wheels are dated November 54, that's because it was made late 54 for the 55 year. I very much would like to recover that 55, I think it would be great to rebuild it into running condition but not touch its patina! I would really appreciate it if you could tell how to get there. The Marine who was killed was my Mother's age, she was born in 37 as well, my father was born in 34, they were of the same Generation. Your ''fifties bel air" is actually a 1955 Chevrolet 210 2-door sedan, originally painted Sea Mist Green and was equipped with a .265 V8 2v and Powerglide. Your 'second car' is a mid-1950s International Harvester half-ton pickup. The 'American hood' is from a 1959 Chevrolet in Aspen Green. The loose tailgate is from an '80s GMC pickup. Car # 4 is a 1956 Ford Customline in Diamond Blue. The Kenneth Shanks car is a 1950 Mercury Custom Fordor and its companion a 1953 Oldsmobile 88. They did not crash into each other. Each followed the same trajectory at different times. The upside-down car with the motor/trans still intact is a 1969 Dodge Dart. The Aspen Green '59 Chevy wagon was once connected to the matching hood you found earlier. The car between the Aspen and the Honda is (at best) a 1952 Dodge Coronet. Your 'i dunno what it is' is a Glenmist Green 1952 Ford Customline Tudor Sedan and the rusty seat is the Ford Crestmark front seat frame to the Glenmist '52. The car with the scrawling on the trunk is a 1971-1972 Oldsmobile 98 Regency. We found the Glenmist '52 Ford in 1966, on our very first trip to Death Valley. I spotted it instantly, but my folks refused to let me go down the hill and study it. BTW, you don't need to be paranoid about where this is: there is nothing worth salvaging... TRUST ME!

The International pick up is a 63-68 I believe. The Bed also seem to be a short step side. So it most likely could be an 1000 1/2 ton. Or it could be a 900 or 908 but they are really rare.

The green station wagon is a 1959 Chevrolet Parkwood wagon. the rust free floors are worth grabbing that entire body and cutting out along with some other good parts all around. worth as is $1,500 easy, but to get it out need a helicopter and a flatbed that would be around $5,000.

That rust bucket on it's roof looks to be 1969 Dodge Dart four door. If it's a V8 engine in it, it would be a 273, a 318, or (highly unlikely) a 340. It has the 7.25" rear end, so definitely not a performance model. I'm surprised no one has tried to grab that '55 Chevy 210 two door or that '59 Wagon! I'm not convinced those cars were in accidents...people used to dump junk cars in the desert all the time, and over the years other people bang them up, shoot them, and burn them...

The car Mr. Shanks wrecked is a 49 or 50 Mercury sedan, the car that's wrecked into the Mercury looks to be a 51-53 Oldsmobile sedan. The car that's upside down is a 1969-70 Dodge Dart sedan. The Chevy wagon is a 1959 model. The car on top of the 59 Chevy wagon is either a Dodge or a DeSoto, 1949-1952. The white car with the roof cut off looks like a 52-53 Ford two door sedan. Some will have just been dumped, pushed over the edge after mechanical failures. I suspect a lot of the damage has come from rock slides. Bodies would be removed from crashed cars and if possible the car recovered. That marine who died apparently got out of the car but died in hospital. I doubt anyone would want an engine badly enough to go to the trouble of removing it from a car on that hill so chances are those were just car bodyshells when they were shoved over.
