Here in Pennsylvania they made junkyards put up fences to block drivers from seeing the old cars, to “beautify the roads”. I loved seeing the old stuff. Was like passing a car show without all the glitter. Driving on the back roads, and seeing an old car, my Father in law would say what year it was and what options and motors could be had. Now finding an old car is rare. In the 80’s, I had one of the worst jobs. I was a crane operator at a scrapyard. A lot of muscle cars and classics came in and I had to put them in the crusher. We weren’t allowed to keep any of them. When I asked why they weren’t fixed up, I was told they were beyond repairing. But after watching Graveyard Cars on TV, were they restore cars, the ones I loaded were definitely repairable!

My Grandpa had a '62 long bed 3/4 ton unibody. Only 1 picture of this truck exists, taken in 1969 with my Brownie Hawkeye. I forget what the original engine was, but he put in a 534 from a Super Duty (somehow) along with the 5-speed and driveshaft. He also put in a "reinforced" 1-ton rear. He was a gifted machinist, and that truck was just a beast, man. It never twisted or bent the body even with all that torque.

Yes, sir. I grew up doing junkyard searches in the 60's with my Dad. I love watching them on the KZbins. Dad would occasionally find something for 50 bucks he could drive home, because he figured he could do some wrenching and hammering and make $100 on it. His only miscalculation was Corvairs in the late 60's. He took a hit on those two Spiders he bought in '68.

From 1961 to the middle of the 1963 model year Ford made that unibody truck you are speaking of in the video. IIRC that was only on the 2-wheel-drive trucks. 1964 had a solid front axle on the 2-wheel-drive trucks. 1965-1996 was Twin-I-Beam on the 1/2 ton pickups and it is still used today on the E-series cut-away and the 2-wheel-drive 3/4 and 1 ton Superduties. Great video!

Schramm tractors built from 1950-1970s for navy. Built on IH frame half tractor, half compressor. Used for flight line maintenance as they pull a/c and carts behind. Unusual piece of equipment. Still used into late 70's onboard and navy air stations. Kind of rare, if you need an extra project fun to have. See them online maybe once a year.

When I was young and single, I really enjoyed exploring junk yards! However, that was in the sixties, and I always had a project to two going on. Now, I've been buying new Ford pickups since 1986 through 2016. If you're looking for a great fit part, you can generally substitute similar parts. I would suggest looking at the XLT models, as the XL models are pretty much work trucks. extended cab, crew cab or regular cab window regulators should fit easily, along with the power door lock motors. The switches generally are more particular to the body/interior style. Generally, pre-1997 would generally be similar. If in doubt, take the plug too, and leave the wires long enough to splice in if needed. Some parts don't change unless needed...this isn't GM or Chrysler of old!

The solid unibody went out in 1964. My folks bought a brand new F-150 Custom Cab short bed with a 240CI six in it and it had the cab and bed separate. I just sold it to a fellow because I was not able to bring old Sara back into decent shape. After running back and forth across the country a few times and spending time back in Illinois it contracted rust big time. Anyway, 1965 on regarding the unibody. I still remember coming home in it and the new truck smell. I do miss her for sure. Take care

Ford used the same cab from 1980 to 1996 for the F150’s. And up to ‘97 for the f250 and 350 so a lot of those cabs would have useable parts for your truck. Also, the medium duty trucks also used the same cab if you can find a those, F600, F700 etc…

Yes but the interior from 80-97 is different, mounts different and will not interchange. 80-86 will not fit 92-97, etc. Front clips are not interchangeable but cabs, doors and beds are pretty much a swap.

I had a '95 Explorer and the plug for the door wiring harness wore out. That was over ten years ago. Found one new/old stock at a dealership and they wanted 600 bucks for it. The mechanic found one at a junkyard for 20. That part will wear out too. But really you'd be better off going with crank windows. You'll just run into that same issue again using worn-out old electrical parts. I ended up taking that to the junkyard because it was a constant thing with electrical parts getting old and worn out - fire hazard.

Schramm 160 Pneumatractor; ( SCHRAMM was founded in 1900 by Chris Schramm to built air compressors.) Schramm built tractors were based on International Harvester frames and engines between the 1950s and 1970s. They also had some connections with Farmall. These tractors were, essentially, portable air compressor units and not designed for tillage or other typical tractor work. Although some may have been fitted with backhoes to complement the jack hammer or other air tools. Schramm no longer builds tractors or air compressors. Today, Schramm, Inc. is a privately held manufacturer of mobile, top-head hydraulic drilling rigs and related equipment for the global mining, energy, and water well industries.

Chances are you've got the typical issue with that harness. They brake wires between the door and the firewall. Unplug it behind the kick panel, pull the harness through the firewall, and rubber out of the door. Cut the tape off the rubber and slide the rubber off the harness so you can access the harness, and then you can repair the broken wire and reinstalleverything. Another issue I've run into is the door not properly grounding to the cab, which is just a matter of removing the bolts (I do one at a time unless the door needs adjustment) I've also had wire terminals break at the plug which is an easy fix as well.

Hank, you should already know that you can do anything you put your mind to. You get you a project car and practice enough and eventually you will become an artisan. I think that car may make a perfect first start for you if you have any interest in building that skill. Put your mind to any task enough to build that into a skill and you can do anything you want. You just have to decide to do it and know that you will fail but fail enough times and you will become a success. Trust in yourself and in your faith. =)
