When we visit a new county; we want to see all the sights, explore all the regions, and eat all the foods. This means that, naturally, we often get things slightly wrong on the first try. When we first arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we tried one of the National desserts: cendol! Not only did we pronounce it wrong, we ate it the wrong way (and also decided to have our cendol with durian which was probably too advanced!). In this video, we finally get our hands on a true local Cendol from Melaka (or Malacca)! All the right ingredients, the original flavour, the perfect dessert street food on a hot day! Before this, we also eat some amazing local breakfast and COFFEE!

Yea roti canai can be eaten anytime but most “mamak” restaurants take it off their menu during lunchtime. I feel it’s to ensure people order the lunch mains instead of spamming roti canai which probably isn’t that great for their profit margin. It’s understandable from a business perspective.

both coffee that u order are actually the same...the white one is bcoz its already been mixed with condensed milk...this is actually kopi tarik....the other one is black bcoz the condensed milk is not been mixed yet...this is what we called kopi panas or hot coffee....this is for those who dont like their drink to be too sweet...cant you see they give you spoon with the black coffee...it is for you to control the level of sweetness by yourself...if you dont like it to be too sweet, just stir a little bit accordingly...with the white coffee @ kopi tarik, you dont have the chance to control the level of sweetness bcoz it is already mixed beforehand.

You will be going from one World Heritage city (Malacca - Dutch/Portuguese influences) to another World Heritage City (Penang - The UKs major outpost in Southeast Asia in the past). Penang is famous for its food like Asam Laksa, Pasembor, Char Kuey Teow, Nasi Kandar and more. Also the Cendol in Penang tastes different, but equally famous as the one in Melaka.

The main different between white coffee and usual coffee is the way the beans was roasted, unlike usual coffee beans, white coffee beans were roasted using low heat, it weren't roasted throughly and didn't added any sugar in the process thus it doesn't have that dark caramel look normal coffee beans have, colour is much lighter and taste less bitter, that explained why white coffee usually tasted sweeter than normal coffee with condensed milk.

3:53 the difference between the white coffee and the traditional coffee is the ingredients in which the coffee beans are roasted with. Traditional coffee usually roasted with margarine and sugar, the caramelised sugar makes the beans darker during roasting. While the white coffee roasted with only margarine and no sugar which in turn becomes lighter in colour (not caramelised), hence 'white' coffee

The basic curry of roti canai are a mix of two type which is dhal curry and a sambal which is the red thing you see in the curry, the taste of the curry depends on the ratio of the two which if you want more sweet ask for more sambal and if you want a light taste then more dhal,if you have a difficulty eating roti canai just ask the cooker to cut it into a piece, if you want to ask it in Malay "tolong cincang roti canai" which mean "please cut roti canai into a piece" then you can easily eat it using fork or by hand

Hi Adriana & Dylan, 'canai' means rolling the dough until it is thin. As for roti canai, the dough is roll or flatten using hands and then you fling it in the air to thin it before you put it on the pan. That's why it's called Roti Canai.😀

My 14yo daugther was yelling "That's wrong!!!" as she watched you mixing the cendol. We don't mix our food normally. If you mix it, you'll get only one taste one intensity from it but when you pick the different condiments and ingredients, you'll get a whole lot of different experience. You can also mix a combination of whatever on the plate with different intensity (eg. gula melaka/ice/green jelly/etc) then you will finally hit the taste you may be looking for. Thereafter, you must make another order and request the condiment/ingredient that your want more, it will lead you to another level of experience the same dish. This is the way to experience Malaysian food for the first time. Of course you can mix it all up after you experiment and familiarize with it. Eg. Nasi lemak, you don't mix it up before you eat it. You taste a bit of the sambal to test the intensity of the spiciness (most nasi lemaks have different level of spiciness), then you taste the anchovy for it saltiness, the rice for the original fragrant of coconut & pandan. Finally you start making combination of the condiments on the plate differently to experience it. It is like getting to know every different race and culture individually here in Malaysia. Experience the culture through their food. Warning : you may not like the individual condiment/ingredient on the plate when you taste it at the beginning, but when you finally get the combination right, that's when it hits you. That's the reason why every condiment and ingredient make sense in the dish. This is why Malaysian have so many ethnic groups and live harmoniuosly. I'm having nasi lemak almost everyday and yet I still discover new taste and experience in every nasi lemak meal. That's why we never get bore of it. I hope you have splendid and pleasant experience here in Malaysia. Cheers!

nyonya cuisine, chicken rice ball, popiah & satay is also good in malacca. Maybe can also try Jonker Street on a Saturday for its night market. Try Penang or Ipoh next; plenty of good food as well.

You can eat the roti with your hands or using the cutlery. Just tear the roti with your fingers. When using cutlery, use the spoon like you use your knife to tear the roti apart. Whatever is comfortable for you. There's a Jonker Walk night might on the weekends. They have everything there, food, drinks, clothings, accessories, etc. Malacca is also famous for its peranakan dish which is a fusion of Chinese and Malay dishes. Oh wow! You're gona love Penang. Its the food capital of the country. You should try the nasi kandar, char kueh tiaw and asam laksa. Visit the famous theme park called The escape where you get to experience both obstacle course and water park by just buying one entry ticket. You get to experience the world's longest water slide high above ground as you glide between trees. Penang has lots of cafes that you can try different coffees. They even have Starbucks by the beach.

Roti canai in the mornings usually comes just with empty gravy dip either curry based or dhal. More elaborate and satisfying is to eat it with chicken, beef, lamb or fish curry which are normally not ready in the morning in some shops.

Yes that is correct in most states, but in Georgetown, Penang the roti canai with the chicken and beef are served as early as 7AM in most roti canai places like Argyll road roti canai, Hutton lane roti bakar and Transfer road roti canai.

Great reaction.....can try the roti canai telur (with egg)..the one you took is roti canai kosong (just plan)....some people order 1 each for breakfast... for the drinks you can always mention "kurang manis" when do the order then they will reduce the either the sugar or milk if you don't prefer sweet drinks........

@@2Passports1Dream the origin of white coffee is actually from Ipoh, my hometown. White Coffee are generally more creamy and sweeter in taste as the coffee beans are roasted with margarine and sometimes sugar to reduce the acidic taste of the coffee and density to the flavour. I'm actually staying in Melaka now but will be back Ipoh as my parents are staying there still. If there's an opportunity to meet up in Ipoh or Melaka, I can bring you both around as I did before with the Jetlag Warriors and Food and Footprints 👣. Another pro tip, get to know a local subscriber and they will probably able to bring you to all the local gems that you would probably not able find out as a tourist.
