I am 71 years old and when I was in public grammar school we sang this song every year at Thanksgiving. I miss those days.

I'm closing in on 60 and we sang it in school, too. That's where I remember it from. And also Girl Scouts. It sure doesn't happen now, does it? It's a beautiful song.

My favorite Thanksgiving hymn. We sang it in public school in the 1950's and 1960's along with "Come Ye Thankful People, Come."

I'm now 71 years old in 2022 - and remember singing this every Thanksgiving while in elementary school - particularly in 4th grade. Our teacher was Miss McCall and our daily school morning routine began with the Lord's Prayer, singing Holy, Holy, Holy, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and a morning devotional. Then, and only then, did our school day begin. That was during the 50s-early 60s. We had no "issues" at school, so, everyone (great and small) went to public school.

I am seventy six years old and from Massachusetts the place where the pilgrims landed the him that we sang was written by an unknown author in the Netherlands the Netherlands were under attack by the Spanish King and after about a year in England I'm sorry the Netherlands the Pilgrims really couldn't make a living there and they weren't well accepted although there was no persecution and most of the worst of all was that the children were assimilating in seduction becoming really more Dutch than English so the pilgrims decided they're only hope for religious freedom and a better life was the new world the Mayflower bleach and it broke its main mast the middle of the voyage it had to be propped up and they finally made it to the tip of Massachusetts even though the king's charter for their company was for Virginia but bad winds blew the way off course and they decided to stay in Massachusetts they stayed on board the ship for about 3 weeks because it was so cold and then the master of the ship sailed the Mayflower up the coast and they disembarked about 50 mi maybe less and foundedfounded their colony anyway that's the story of the pilgrims at least the way I learned it and I love my school days in Massachusetts it was full of prayers that we did Jewish kids didn't know but we prayed anyway it was full of customs that they taught us about America I love America I hope that America will heal itself of its racism it's anti-Semitism because I'd like to stay here and I like my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandchildren to live here in peace and Harmony have a

Recently this song popped into my head. The only thing I could remember was the first line and the tune generally so I searched online and found this. How great to be part of this group who also said this hymn popped into their head! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA. Thankful to God that I live in a relatively free nation, but very aware that we are in the last days that Yeshua warned us about. Let us be grateful for Adonai's love and faithfulness toward us.

Valerius is the author of this song. He was a civil servant in Veere in Zeeland (the old Zealand) he wrote the song after a victory of the Dutch over the Spanish in the Dutch independence war.

And to think this song has this history! How apropos of today!! This is a wonderful, traditional Christian Hymn written originally by Adrianus Valerius as a patriotic song in 1597 to celebrate the Dutch victory over Spanish forces in the Battle of Turnhout. The Catholic King Phllip II of Spain, whom the Dutch were fighting, had forbidden the Protestants to gather for worship.

Another reason why Thanksgiving is such a widely celebrated American Holiday. It is generally considered non-religious. Despite that this hymn is incredible.

I remember singing this song in elementary school every Thanksgiving...now all you see is rump shakers from the children to the principal. Prayer was taken out of the schools and now we're seeing the consequences!!!

Having grown up when the ruling against forced prayer in public schools happened, I can assure you, prayer nor God were ever forbidden in our Public Schools. I was still free to pray silently to God, ANYTIME I wished! What did change? No child whose religion was different from mine would be FORCED to pray in a way that did not fit with their beliefs! That was utterly and completely an American ruling that fit with one of the basic rights of our nation-freedom of religion! I grew up in the '50s and '60s. And even as a kid I saw no logic in the claim, that God and prayer were now forbidden in our schools. Even as a kid I knew clearly that I could still pray, anywhere and any time I wanted to! And pray in private, as Jesus said we should "not on the street corner" trying prove how pious we were. I knew then that I certainly would not have wanted to be forced to pray the prayers of some other religion, so why should someone who didn't believe as I did, be forced to pray my prayers?? Again, freedom to pray and believe as we wish is one of the very foundations of our nation!! But yes, God and prayer continue to be in public schools, in the heart of any child or teacher who so wishes, it's just not forced on those who don't so wish!!
