It's actually pretty interesting, the only reason this movie isn't massively more popular is that it came out at exactly the wrong time. Not only was it released in November, a time where people like to go into money saving mode for Christmas. It was also competing with a lot of big names so it got skipped over in the theater by a lot of people. Life of Pi, Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 2, Wreck-it Ralph, Red Dawn, Skyfall, Taken 2, Pitch Perfect, and some other sequels. Everyone who watched it loved the movie and it had mostly positive critic and audience reception, but it only grossed 300 million off a 145 million budget. The studio lost like 90 mil due to marketing and distribution costs. So it was DreamWorks biggest box office bomb until this very year with Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken which didn't even make it's budget. It's been widely speculated that if this movie came out either a month earlier or a month later that it might have become one of DreamWorks leading franchises up there with Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon but probably not Shrek.
