My offroad fiberglass bedsides finally arrived for the Ranger backhalf! After some trimming, I temporarily mounted them to the backhalf to figure out how to build the remaining structure. I am trying to decide on the optimal spare tire mount and need your help. I have narrowed it down to three options for mounting. Comment below which one you think is the best option!

Number 3. weight down low and vision not obstructed. Bonus is the spare will be pretty well captured within structure so no worries about losing it.👌

I like option 3. As long as you will be able to load and unload the tire easy enough. You will have a nice storage area above it that has a larger footprint but somewhat shallow. Plus the weight of the wheel and tire is as low as possible.

Option three. The low, flat position is easy to secure with a 2" strap, and helps give you the lowest CoG possible, for an already kinda tall rig. If need be, you can add storage to either side of the tire box, as well, between the bed sides.

I like option 3, two good things about the tire being lower, one lower center of gravity, two don't have to lift it at high. The bedsides are lookin mint!!

Go with #3. Keep that low CG and ease of tire maintenance. It would be cool to see you build a tire slide out rack if you go that route, maybe. Plus it looks more like a “sleeper” prerunner rig.

Option 3. I have the cargo area of my XJ setup like that. I just have a board across the top of the tire right now, but it works well. Everything goes to plan and you'll never need the tire. But you will always want in and out of the cargo box. No need to fuss with a tire 98% of the time to make getting the tire out easier 2% of the time. It's also better to put the tire under the cargo box to minimize the sun exposure.
@danieldion370

Option number 2. I think its way easier to lift and maneuver the tire when it is already upright. Especially that large of a tire. Plus i think the access to the storage box would be easier that way as well and you could make it larger without it looking odd than in option number 3. And those rangers have very limited storage space so a covered box would definitely be helpful.

Option 2 is best for storage, that is one reason why I like that option
@landyandy9617

Option #3, weight is kept low. Make the tube structure accommodate the largest tire you can run. Make your storage box on gas struts to access the tire. Realistically you’ll need to get into the storage box 10x more than you’ll hopefully need your spare. Can also store spare fluids around the spare if required. Keep up the great work !

My opinion is for #3, but kick the tire over to the passengers side a little. Maybe you could put a jack on top of a tool drawer on the drivers side. Lower is better in my opinion. Great job so far on the truck!!

Number 3. Like many have stated: low Cg… better view… easy access to storage. My last Jeep had 35” spare sitting up on normal mount and rear view was awful. Cg lower alone would be enough reason for me!

I'm with the majority of the comments on here it would seem. #3 flat, weight down low, box/storage on top. Chances are you may vary how much gear/stuff your carrying depending on the trip, whereas you'll probably always have the spare on. Loving the content man! 👌

Option 3, BUT, you know after this is all done and you wear these tires out you will go bigger - thinking 40's, so don't frame the tire in completely, just make it so you can go with a larger tire later, I would do a center mount from the bottom with a spin down collar in the center to hold it, and leave room to the sides and a little space under the top box. Don't say you won't go bigger on tires as well - we all eventually do;)

I would have to go with option 2 but with the tire on the drivers side so you have visibility. I think if you have a box back there it would be easy to get as much weight in it as the tire so it wouldn't really offset the drivers weight. Then you would have the visibility because the tire would be directly behind you. Option three would put the box lid up high so you would always have to climb up on the tire to reach to the back of it.

I’m changing my mind. They sell a big steel drawer/tool box for trucks. If you mount that first and the tire on top of it, then you just slide the drawer out to access tools and recovery. The weather guard pack rat.

Good way to get comments! Haha I think option 3 looks cool with the tire flat, but not sure how the box will look. COG is a big talking point but what will weight more? Tire or storage? If the tools, spares, fluids, and box weights more… than option 1 would have a better COG. Option 1 might end up with more tubing trying to create a “hinge”. Option 3 you can forgo the hinge. I’m kinda leaning to option 2. I think it will have best function and COG. It might look a little funny if it’s not finished clean though. The box is resting low and technically the tire is sitting low also. Function>form?
@anythinggoesgarage1067
@anythinggoesgarage1067 Жыл бұрын
Option two, but tire on drivers side with storage box on pass. side. Moving the tire to the other side will be less visual impedance when looking back through rear window and the storage box on the opposite side can be built low enough that it not in your line of sight. retain ability to load/unload easily. I like the idea of three, but the box being up high, imho, probably would put more mass higher than the half a tire. I guess that would really come down to your final design. Not a fan of option one.

I like number two, its got ease of use and i like the asymmetry. Id also consider something in between one and three where its at an angle th low end being the tail gate end perhaps at the same angle as those two bars on the roll cage that come down from the back of the cab, continue the line the flow although im not sure how you’d do the tool box for that. Its also a bit hard to decide without seeing it with the tool box to see how it all looks together so maybe just make one out of cardboard to see what it would look like.
