I think in their situation, going without a helmet is more Risk/Reward governed than we find in climates to the north. In the US, for example, in states requiring mandatory helmet use, compliance can be as high as 99%. But the fines are high, and enforcement is a priority. EXCUSES: Humidity and temperatures are high in Jamaica and wearing a helmet can be a very uncomfortable experience. Being hot and sticky on a bike can be dangerous as one fusses with the helmet to get some relief. There is also the dreadlock hair styles that make fitting a helmet properly a difficult proposition. There is also a rebellious (freelance) way of life that is popular among many Jamaicans, they conceptualize legal regulation as babylon rather than as safety concerns. Motorcyclists in Jamaica rationalize as well, claiming that they drive slower than drivers in other nations because the rougher, narrower and more winding roads of Jamaica do not permit the more dangerous high speed travel that contributes to data in other nations. Oddly enough, the most common reason given for not wearing a helmet is 'only driving a short distance'. The other most common reason given is lack of ownership of a helmet. Although helmets that meet US safety requirements are mandatory in Jamaican, there appears to be little enforcement of this law. Police may sympathize with rider opinions or the financial burden (about $50 US) it presents, or there simply may not be enough Police to enforce the law consistently. Motorcycle ownership has increased greatly recently and in some Parishes and this has put a real burden on local hospitals. Most deaths are due to skull fractures and brain lesions (internal ripping of the brain) many of those who suffer lesions without death are unable to carry on a normal life due to impaired functioning of their brains. Bottom line: life itself may not be as valued in Jamaica which is ironic considering how pleasant life here can be and how so many profess to the importance of quality of life. Or perhaps quality of life is artificially inflated in the minds of some drivers over quantity of days spent alive. Truth is, there are lots of little reasons that prohibit helmet use adoption in Jamaica but there is no single thing a driver can do to increase their chances of surviving a serious crash than wearing a helmet. (much of this information was gleaned from reading three distinct published studies done here in Jamaican since 1999) Don't be a bomba clot; wear a helmet!

@@santacruzman I should develop a helmet that’s comfortable in hot, humid climates! I would get rich. Motorcycles are popular all over the world. I can just imagine an emergency room nurse looking at someone and shaking their head…not much you can do after an motorcycle accident when the rider doesn’t have a helmet. My sister is a ER nurse, she and her fellow nurses unfortunately call such riders ‘organ donors’. Got to weigh the balance…risk vs discomfort..

@@seanc2862 Unfortunately When I was 23 I crashed my little ride to work CG 125. Woke up 3 months later from an induced coma . To brain injury, had to learn to walk and talk again. My dads a biker so spent nearly as much on my gear as the bike. Frank Thomas Carbon / Kevlar mix helmet in a sale for £350. I think but can’t remember my leather jacket and zip together jeans were Frank Thomas as well, but they had body armour. I was wearing full gauntlets. I’m lucky to be alive and cringe when I see people gambling their health. Can’t even ride a pushbike anymore as my meds don’t control my seizures. Sorry for dropping all this on you. But I can’t ,lie.

@@Oooo-bi7bi Damn, I'm sorry to hear that brother. Without a doubt your own personal strength, determination and will along with your protection have kept you here with us today. I don't say much about possibilities as I fortunately still ride to this day, got a little GN 125 myself, but doing my bit and gearing up honors those that can't ride anymore. I lost an uncle on a bike and he had everything.. he was lucky to be in one piece.. seeing someone without a helmet makes me absolutely wince. I hope one day you'll be back on the road again brother, all the best 🤝

@@seanc2862 like I said, don’t want to bring you down but can’t lie. 1 in 200 people develop epilepsy in their lives. 1 in 20 brain damaged people get it. A year or so after my accident I had my first seizure. I was 24 when I got out of hospital.. I’m 47 I think now, I was born in 73 in November . But yeah in the last few years my medication hasn’t prevented seizures. So they sent me for a scan and the part of my skull I damaged in the accident has grown into my brain. So they think it’s that. Kind of a double edged sword. Because it means I’m eligible for full benefits and a flat. They even fitted a new shower, because I can’t have baths. So for the first time since before my accident. I get a living income. The workers that look after me got me a bus pass and they helped me get a disabled railcard. I watch those KZbin channels were they put a camera on their helmet and I feel like I’m riding the bike.

It seems like he needs some time to adjust to it because it is new and faster than his old bike. In the previous vlog Simon suggested that he should ride it but he declined. He's probably waiting until he feels more comfortable and safe riding it.

@@santacruzman beer runs resulted in three crashes in a row for myself, the third time I had my eldest on the back whilst a BMW 4x4 knocked us off before driving over the bike. I'm only concerned and coming from a place of love. Law of averages makes me inclined to get someone else to do the running around and free up more time for Chucky. Blessings

Simon,As a long time bike rider,I would suggest to not drive the bike with one hand.If there was anything in the road,Fruit from a tree,Trash,or an animal run across your path,It may be a big problem with one hand on the handle bars.Get a camera mount that clips on any part of the bike with a flexible telescopic boom,I seen them that can pan the camera angle with just your finger by the handlebar.And also a bike bag seat or basket for over the back fender so you guys do not have to hold things while on the bike.Safety should be first priority,Especially without a helmet and good protective riding gear.
