Congrats on those onions! It would be really cool if you could do a progression video that showed you panting and feeding over time. There is a KZbin channel, Hollis?? that does these types of videos. I think they are the most informative as it condenses everything for a specific crop to a whole season of growing. I know I could go back and find all of your updates, but lots of people want to see a start to finish product in one video.

Melons won't be planted this year, for me, until I harvest wheat, likely sometime in the middle of June. Onions... I have a fair number of perennial onions, so I'm not as concerned about harvesting them to make space for something else. The biennial onion I planted is "Cabernet", which is a "late intermediate" type adapted for 35 degrees and further north. I'm at 36N. It hasn't started forming bulbs yet, but it is beginning to put on some nice top growth now that the weather has begun warming up. This is my first year planting this variety, so I guess I'll find out how it does. Nice crop of crabgrass and smartweed, by the way. 🙂

I have used your tips to grow some nice onion 2 years in a row. This year i tried DP sweet, timon and Chianti. All did well but i had more like 40% splitting of the DP sweet. Does watering too much cause splitting. I even have some triplets. But they will saute the same 😂. I am gonna try the white phantom onion next year if they store longer and more timons since my wife likes the round onions better. Says they peel easier. Everyone who has tried these onions wants more and comment on how much better they are than store onions. Thanks again.

This year we are having to harvest our onions in two stages. A 9 degree freeze killed about 60% of the crop, so we grew more transplants to replace them. The common rule is, the sweeter the onion, the shorter the shelf life. I think it has to do with the water content.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
I agree about the sweeter the onion, the shorter the storage. Probably has to do with water and also sulfur. The more sulfur an onion has in it, usually the more "bite" it has.

What a great onion haul, I would be very happy with any of those. A freeze dryer would sure come in handy for preserving all those onions. I fed mine enough nitrogen to grow five acres of corn but none of them are as big as yours. The artic blast killed off quite a few of mine and I replaced them with younger plants and they won't have a chance of making a big bulb. If the good Lord keeps me able and He hasn't taken me home you can bet there will be lots of chicken manure in my raised beds for the onions.

I finally made my first gallons of iced tea for the year. My standard tea is no longer available, so I am using a Darjeeling/Ceylon loose leaf blend from Upton Tea. It isn't a good hot tea, but I've figured out how to make a really nice iced tea with it. Ordered a kilo bag of it.
@Maria-ql3fc Жыл бұрын
Be careful that iced tea is addictive, my family has been hooked on it for generations. There’s only several teas here in the south that my son (the major tea consumer in the house) really likes and it’s Tetley, Lipton and Red Diamond, all especially blended for iced tea. I lived in Europe for a couple years and trying to make a good iced tea out of their hot tea blends never worked so good so I gave up iced tea until I was back in the states. If you like hot tea the Europeans have the best (so they say)
@markware4933 Жыл бұрын

Here's my sad story...I sowed Candy onion seeds in December (zone 8a), planted 48 onions out in 4 short rows in a flowerbed on February 19th. Planted them sort of close so I could pluck green onions and still have some left to bulb up. They were looking mighty fine and good enough to start pulling some when, the day before Easter, I noticed all but about 10 left on the outside row were missing. I thought surely someone came along and took them for their Easter dinner. Then several days later, I went out to pick some of the ones left, and most of them were gone except for a couple of nice ones and a few puny ones. So I just pulled the remaining ones. Pulling them disturbs the soil, and the soil wasn't disturbed where the onions disappeared, just a little depression there, as if you lightly poked your finger into the soil. These were planted over a known mole run, but I thought moles were carnivores? Google says voles are herbivores, but I've never seen a vole. All I know is I won't plant onions in the ground any more, just in pots from now on. This was my first time to sow from seed, and I discovered that's the way to go. Anyway, your onion crop looks great, and I'm jealous!!!!!!
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
