Smoke was probably started from chaff inside the throat. I’ve been watching farmers a long time. I’ve seen it happen on combines & hay balers. Good thing you had water on it so fast. Combines burn so fast. Scary as heck.

I know just how you feel a few year ago I had a total of 5 small fires on the combine. It was a very hot year and the dust was very fibrous and it was this that started by a spark from the exhaust while it was going through an auto regeneration. When you have a fire it makes you very sensitive and on high alert. Hope the rest of your harvest goes well.

Just an FYI. I've got magnets I keep at various locations. Put one in your tool box lid. Helps not losing nuts and bolts out in the field. Drop a nut in the field and it's a goner

I have done that. I was combining flax, and it wrapped up around the feeder chain. It was moving, but flax has oil in it, and it got hot enough to light up the stocks. These where the days before being able to hydraulically back out the feed chain and I did not have a detachable draper head. So, I had to run down and turn the feed by hand with a big wrench.

Service is critical for Detroit Diesel, start with fuel filters and see how it preforms, if the exhaust is light blue look at the turbo seal leaking oil into the combustion supply air.

That's always my biggest fear on a combine OR a cotton picker. Harvest conditions contain all the ingredients for a disaster. Chaff, cotton lint, grease, hot moving parts, hydraulic fluid under pressure, diesel fuel, hot engine parts, grain dust, and overall dry conditions. We lost a cotton picker in 1999 to a fire. When cotton lint blazes up, there's not a whole lot you can do.

Good morning. Is there a rectangle tube in front of your feeder house drive chain sprocket? It holds little stripper plates at the sprockets. If you have it take that whole tube out. Our dealers and many more take them out on new and trade in machines. Good luck! We will be starting in about 3 weeks. Sw ia

I had a Cotton picker fire and lost it for lack of water and since then I use a 5 gallon hydraulic bucket filled with water on my picker and combine then use a swimming pool type hand operated water cannon to get to places that are hard to see, very cost effective about $10.00 , just remove the top spout with a flat screwdriver and the water gun will just fit in the opening and also is a storage place for the water gun. Happy Harvest

Daniel - Do you have a cheap infrared temperature gun? Need at least one in you and your dads pickups or carry one in each combine so when you smell smoke you can use it to test bearings, drive belts and pulleys etc when you smell smoke. It can also tell when a bearing is overheating 200F degrees or higher and failing and running hot or needs lube. Fairly cheap online or at like Harborfreight for $ 50 each and you can check temps while the bearings are running.

Whe had the s same problem with our combine, look in the back of your feeder house close the gap between your sprocket where your feeder chain runs on and your knife next to it the bolts are underneath just feel around next to the sprocket it is in a difficult to reach just, close the gap where your sprocket doesn’t rub the knife then heat up again just get it as close as jou feel comfortable

I know exactly how you feel. I was combining heavy wheat in my old 1480 international. You run around like a chicken with its head cut off. I found it. Belts had started chaff on fire. Luckily I had a fire extinguisher and my neighbor come running over with his. Took me half the day to stop shaking.

The neighbor had a John Deere combine about 40 years ago and he would have me grease it. The diagram showed 163 spots that were to be greased. One day I counted and could only find 159 so I told him. Next day. He greased it and came up with 159 also. The very next day he had a fire on the back side of the feeder house from a bearing that when out. There was a top and bottom rollers and the bearing when out. We found the 4 grease inserts 😂. Only way to access them was climbing in the back and remove a bunch of stuff to get to them. That was terrible engineering and to replace the rollers bearing was all day job
