Yeah, that’s high enough for a febrile seizure. Any parent or caretaker should immediately help to bring the fever down..take off clothes, put in tepid bath, ice packs to underarms and groin, an antipyretic (acetaminophen or ibuprofen).

To add, with children it’s always best to check when the temperature is high anyway as they can get something called febrile illness from high temperatures as they cannot regulate properly and may have febrile convulsions which can of course be very scary
@Smelloise1015 жыл бұрын
So I’m a children’s nurse in A&E and just so people don’t think they need to call 999 when their child has a temperature...temperatures are normal in children, it helps them fight infections and viruses. The shaking is like a shivering to try to cool themselves down, the same if they’re too cold, they’ll shake to warm up. Also, a child DOES NOT need to have a temperature of above 40 to have a febrile convulsion, some children will convulse with a temperature of 37.9 and some children will reach 42 and never have a seizure. Also, checking the temperature every few minutes is not going to help. Give calpol/ibuprofen, strip them off, try not to cuddle into them and just give them time. If still high after a couple hours, give the other medicine and repeat. Obviously there are red flags that go along with temperatures such as non-blanching rashes and neck stiffness etc etc but just the temperature alone is not cause for immediate concern

Children respond to an infection by heating their bodies up to clear it. A 40 degree temp is not good news. Although it’s tempting to cuddle, all you’re doing is keeping her warm. Strip down to nappy/underwear, give a tepid bath if possible. Ibuprofen is better at bringing down a high temp than calpol. There’s always a reason for the temp though... I don’t think Alessia should have been out and about afterwards. She seemed to hold her ear a little... perhaps an ear infection. I’m sure at A&E however that’s one of the first things they check for. My 9 month old daughter was running a 40.2 temp too a year ago, turned out to be Pneumococcal Meningitis.

I hope she is feeling better! I've worked in nursery for 12 years and the worst thing you can do for them when they have a temp is cuddle them tight as your body heat also heats them its so hard as all they want is comfort, try stripping her down and placing a breathable blanket over her slightly, offer cool drinks and also cold compress with a flannel, you don't want to go to cold on her but it will gradually help a little until the temp goes down. I've seen kids have convulsions and it isn't very nice xxxx

My daughter has developed a fever like that before in fact she was around Alessia ‘s age the first time. When we called the doctor they told us to alternate giving her doses of Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 4 hours and to put her in a lukewarm or tepid bath to help bring her temperature down and reduce the risk of febrile seizure. Her’s happened at 2 am and the doctor’s office was closed and if we had gone to the Emergency Room the only thing different would be them doing bloodwork, maybe an IV for fluids, and prescribe an antibiotic if it’s not a virus. She booked us an appointment for the morning and told us to take her to the hospital if she got worse before 8 am when the office opened. Thankfully she didn’t get worse and when we took her in she had double ear infections. It’s scary to see your baby under the age of 3 spiking a high fever especially a first child. Your calm demeanor helped to keep Alessia calm. Babies and children are more sensitive to their parents demeanor than most people realize which is why people on yesterday’s video were telling you to stop saying that the different rides and activities were scary and because you were making her scared to even try each thing. It’s the same thing when parents project their fears about going to the doctor or dentist based on their fears or insecurities. Some start it with their baby as early as 4-6 months old saying things about being scared of needles and getting shots which plants that notion in their head even when they don’t understand what is being said and it gets worse as they get older and more aware of things being said and done. Something to think about. All of your children are treasures and it’s fun to watch their different relationships develop and grow as they do. Eduardo has been such a great role model for Alessia and Andrea on how to show their love for each other, play, and interact and get along. There will always be minor squabbles because they’re siblings and different ages which is normal. Those close relationships can last a lifetime. I do wish that you both would stop constantly saying that Eduardo is a mess or trouble maker or the other negative things and the same with Alessia being Alessie messy or she’s a mood because they hear you and it reinforces that behavior or attitude. Back when Alessia was a tiny baby Eduardo had matured and developed enough to realize that he didn’t have to do everything Emilia dictated and that he could do things his way and play with different people and things. As expected Emilia wasn’t happy about the changes going on in her kingdom and she started rebelling in her own way which was doing things covertly and making it look like Eduardo had done it and faking injuries and blaming Eduardo for it. You can actually go back to videos from then and watch her in action. Sometimes it takes an outside observer to see what is going on. It’s similar to how children can be and act at school and on the playground where out of self preservation they blame someone else for something they did. It was around that time you suddenly noticed that Eduardo was acting up a lot and being naughty which in a way he was because he was standing his ground and not meekly following and doing everything Emilia said or did. Being in school and around children other than Emilia he had learned that hey she isn’t the boss and he could do other things and it was okay to do them. Emilia has really developed and matured over the last 7-8 months and thankfully it has been good changes as she realizes that she can now do different things with her schoolmates and friends and that she doesn’t always want to do things with her younger siblings and that’s okay too. Evidence of just how much she has changed is in the clip in her bedroom where Eduardo is trying to film a little bit with singing and dancing and he tells her not to be in it and she backs off to let him. In the past she would have been the center of attention and controlling everything. Pretty cool to see how that has changed. It became a game each time she snuck into the background and eventually they were giggling about it. I LOVE seeing how your relationship with each child is evolving and changing as they get older and can do different things with you. I have really enjoyed getting to know you and watch as the different events in your life and family has helped you all grow and change not only as individuals, but as a family and the different relationships within the family. I have a lot of respect for you and your family.I hope you understand what I am talking about. Moving to the new house was actually beneficial to the children because the shake up caused by the move allowed subtle changes to happen that allowed new dynamics to grow and develop their their relationships and how they interacted with each other. Sure there are still unsettled things that will take longer to even out, but it will calm down more with each passing day. Any change in a child’s routine can disrupt them and their behavior and moods for days just like different things can cause you to have ups and downs. Just some things to think about and I’m not telling what to do or anything just sharing some observations and insights from another parent and a teacher specializing in education of children from birth to 12+ years old. I also come from a large family (8 children) and my many years of working with children. So those with hateful comments etc can stop trying to create drama or being jerks because I won’t respond back to them. And yes I know that they aren’t my children and that I am not part of the family and I am not telling them what to do or how to raise their children. I am sharing information which they can take or leave. Have a nice day and hopefully Alessia is feeling better.

Is the word you are looking for Jonathan a seizure? Because I have already raised two children I want to offer some advice.... but the BEST thing you can do as a parent is take your child to the doctor if you have concerns. Young children with a fever often experience shivers.... here in the states we would put a small child in a warm bath, NOT HOT or cold, warm and as the water cools it will also bring down the temperature. I find adding a pedialite or plain old popcycle while they are getting their temp down ... works as as a nice treat. A young baby could have a parent join them in the bath... while the other parent helps. We would dress the child in cozy pajamas. Not really hot ones because babies tend to overheat. Not light weight because the shivers may start. I hope this helps.

My son suffers from febrile seizures. Its not neccesarily to do with how high the temperature is, but how quickly it reaches a high number. He gets them even in the 38s. Interestingly, the last doctor we saw said throat infections often cause them because they tend to elevate the temperature rapidly. The first one he had was very similar to Alessia's - not a full on seizure, but he went floppy and vacant, but more recent ones have been full on fits. He started having them around 18 months, and is nearly four now, but hasn't grown out of them yet. They are very frightening, and its difficult to know when to call 999, when to call 111, or when to just monitor. We were told to time the seizures and if they lasted longer than 5 minutes, or were more severe than previous ones, we were to call 999. He has been tested for epilepsy too, but that was negative. I can fully sympathize, it really is frightening.

There are ways to lower a baby’s temperature without meds if it gets dangerously high until you can get medical help. Extremely high temperatures can cause issues with the brain. Please ask your pediatrician if they are ok with you giving foot baths with very warm water and lots of salt. You sit the baby and pour the salted water down from knee down and massage in downward motion. This draws the blood down the body, away from the brain, hence lowering the high temperature inn the brain. I have done this for both my babies and even for college friends. With a bad flu! Do a bit of research on this. It can come pick n handy if you can not get to medical help right away ( like on vacation or camping). So glad all is well with your precious Lessie.

Very scary we have dealt with it recently in my 14 month old . Over two babies no matter what doc I asked about fever and when to worry I couldn’t get a decent answer until recently. This was what I was told by a doc I’m confident with , if the temp goes up to even 40 and you can bring it down slowly with calpol etc it’s fine it’s when it shoots up from normal to fever and over 40 worry . It’s how fast it goes up . I hope she is feeling better soon poor baba xxx

Wouldn’t it have been faster to drive themselves to the hospital? Genuinely just wondering
@jenpickering5 жыл бұрын
I live near them and the closest hospital is around 20 minutes from me so I'd guess it's similar for them. Plus parking, plus triage, you're probably looking at about 30-45 minutes without answers. Calling at least gives them some idea of what to do/what it might be before doing all that first 😊(not sure exactly what area they are in, just the town so they could be closer or further away).
@Mbeepyd5 жыл бұрын
It was probably more comfortable to ring 111 first for advice, you never know what sort of state A&E will be in when you get there
@jenpickering5 жыл бұрын
@UCIathD3P0ABMmA_aW3QKtrg that's a myth, you get seen on need. Calling an ambulance when you don't need one does nothing but take away an ambulance from someone who might actually need it. If you call over a broken wrist you'll be seen just as fast as someone who got driven there by a friend with one! If anything it might be slower as you'd have to wait for the ambulance, they'd have to triage you, then they'd drive you there at normal speed (blue lighting to hospital only ever happens if you are basically dying, they blue light to the patient as they don't know the severity of the injury and then drive at normal speed to the hospital), you'd be handed over to the hospital where they would then triage you, before finally they send you to where you need to be which is likely to be a waiting room! If a friend drives you; you get there, you go through triage, you wait. Same queue, quicker to get into it! (My brother is a paramedic!)

Lisa Marie Burley you don’t have to call 111 to ask permission to go to A&E. If you believe you or someone else are needing urgent help you should go to the hospital. 111 will give you advice on the symptoms you give and sometimes they will tell you to go either to the doctors, get a health professional to call you back, tell you to call 999, etc depending on your symptoms ☺️

I love the girls' different reactions to Eduardo hogging the camera. He shoves Emilia and she stands sadly off to the side. Shoves Alessia and she shoves back. And yet both girls are equally lovable. You gotta give it to the sweet ones who don't always have the heart to stand up for themselves, but then there's something to be said for the strong, sassy ones that you admire as well.

Hi Jonathan, You were right to use your parents instinct with Alessia fever not reducing. Febrile convulsions are really terrifying, my son has had Seven, but one in particular was off of the scale scary, when he was Two, he had a seizure, and went into respiratory arrest in the back of an Ambulance, he had to be put into an induced coma to stop the seizure, which was Forty mins long. He is fine now, but i also had a febrile convulsion as a toddler. Any virus, or infection that can bring on a very high temperature can potentially cause one. Always worth getting advice on very high temperatures. All that we have been through, NHS have been Amazing. Get well soon Alessia x

It’s scary but quite normal for them to be shaky with a temp that high. Next time use calpol, a Cold flannel on her head and luke warm bath to help her cool down. Plenty of fluids. Temperatures are actually a good thing as it’s the body fighting off whatever is going on in their bodies. We get scared over them but they are most often not dangerous. Best thing not to panic and just try and help her at home.
