Newcastle tends to be bypassed by most travellers unaware of what they are missing. A proper city, but with a laid back vibe and some of the best coastal scenery you'll find anywhere.

If your heading up the Mid North Coast please consider the Bellingen Valley Shire (Before Coffs Harbour) starting at Urunga on the ocean with an amazing broad walk along the river, to the ocean, then inland on Waterfall Way to the township Bellingen a small alternative town have a swim in one of the creeks or river, ( Bellingen River goes through town )then onto Dorrigo with the Dorrigo Mountain where you will see your first waterfall on side of road, but another once up the top, Dorrigo has a World Heritage listed National Park with some of the best views along the escarpment. Also has a small tree canopy walk with amazing view at the Rainforest Center... The Shire's motto is" From the Mountains to the Sea". there's a couple of free camping spots along the way for a night stop over, the bottom of the mountain at Thora is a lovely one... The Bellingen showground also has paid camping.

Thank you again for another great video. You're inspiring this Australian to organise a trip! FYI - we actually have a squeaky-sand beach in the Wilson's Promontory National Park (Victoria) called "Sqeaky Beach". Not sure if you managed to get there in another video, but I got the impression you went in a different direction when travelling on the Victorian coastline. The Wilson's Prom. is the southernmost tip of mainland Australia.

The reason the cicadas are so loud this year, is because 2 different species hatched at once, which is not usual. They're pretty hectic!

It's school holidays so there are more crowds than usual. It's the high silica content of the sand that causes the squeaking. We have a beach in Victoria called Squeaky Beach. The good thing about the high silica content is that the sand stays cool even on the hottest day.

Some great spots up there, I used to go to Merewether each year to watch the international surfing competition, and the dunes at the end of the video hold a lot of memories too, part of Stockton beach, you used to be able to drive and camp all through there, there's even a small town of tin fishing shacks in the middle of it. The area became much more restricted in 2012 after a big storm made the beachside dunes more vulnerable to erosion.

It’s still school holidays, that’s why it’s still busy. This is the last week though. Next week is when I go on holidays 😅 Cicadas like that here, are the loudest in the world. 120 decibels. It’s quite piercing at first, but your ears adjust to them after a while. Probably because you are now deaf in that frequency 😂 But the brush turkeys are protected Glen. They are making a good comeback from close to extinction

If you want to see a gaol used for convicts, plus prisoners of war and now a museum, that has an awesome walk that goes up to a grave of an escapee a song was made about "wild colonial boy", South West Rocks a few hours north of Newie, I'm a little further north of there, in Coffs Harbour area, which has a few great rainforest walks in the area, the 1 to south-west (Dorrigo) there's a waterfall you walk under. Been awhile since checking, but was a free campsite at base of mountain, on way up to Dorrigo. I'm in Sawtell, which is a quaint seaside village, that has a rock pool beaches and creeks (the big ones lol) and a short drive to Coffs, not a lot worth seeing there, other than Jetty area, the Big Banana and Bruxner Park (Sealy point look out).

The cicadas have been very loud this year as 2 different species have come out to breed in the same year. Cicadas babies, known as nymphs, burrow into the ground for up to 7 years and come out only when the conditions are right. They are the world's loudest insect. Lovely to see you in my home town, although I am originally from the UK. Edit. OMG you found Uprising Bakery. Best bread and other stuff in Australia! In my humble opinion

NEWCASTLE home to the largest ocean pool in the southern hemisphere (Merewether baths), the longest beach in NSW (32 kms Stockton beach) , The largest sand dune mass in the southern hemisphere, the largest salt water lake in the southern hemisphere (Lake Macquarie), it's a short jump to the Hunter Valley wineries, Port Stephens, and Sydney is close by linked by a freeway and regular intercity train connections. It has big city convenience mixed with beach town lifestyle. Easily one of Australia's best cities, but ironically most tourists bypass it and naively go to the same old touristy areas that everyone goes to that offer less!

The sand dunes you talk abut near Anna bay were used in he 1979 film Mad Max and what a lot of people don't know is that scenes from the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga were also filmed in this area although you will find no reference to it on the internet, but you will find it in the credits for the film where theythank y the Worimi aboriginal Land Council which has it's headquaters in Williamtown/Nelson Bay area. Also many of those vehicles in the film were built in Newcastle , once again you will find no reference on the internet, which goes to show that alot of the information is nothing more than a cut and paste from one source to the other.

Sand squeaks when you walk on it because of friction between the grains of sand. This friction causes the grains to vibrate, which transfers energy to the air pockets between the grains. The vibrations travel through the air and reach your ear as a squeak. Explanation The grains of sand need to be uniformly sized and near spherical, with no sharp edges. The sand needs to be dry, but submerged sand can also squeak sometimes. The sound is most audible when the sand has been recently washed. The frequency and amplitude of the squeak depends on the grain size and surface texture. Examples of squeaky beaches Squeaky Beach, Victoria, Australia: This beach is known for its high-pitched squeak, which is caused by the fine, rounded grains of quartz sand. Porthor Beach: This beach is known as the Whistling Sands, but squeaking sands would be more appropriate. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia: This beach is known for its squeaking sand.
