I have 8 Welsh Harlequiin ducks, and I use their poopy pool water to water my plants and garden, and everything thrives. What I like about the duck poop is that it is watery, and assimilates readily into the ground. In the past three years I can only think of a few times that I actually had to rake out any poop from their pen. As opposed to chicken poop which is what they call a 'hot' poop, solid and high in nitrogen, which requires the poop to have to be raked, and aged before adding to any plants.

I'm in the planning stages of getting ducks (which I plan to hatch from eggs). The part about dealing with the poopy water is what's concerning me the most. My land slopes steeply - and the house and water sources are at the bottom of the slope, which has been the wrong way round for almost every reason so far). I think I am going to have to invest in a pump and send water uphill to a pond, letting the waste water trickle down through overflow pipes to the fruit tree areas.
@akatsukiawsome136 ай бұрын
@@Debbie-henri Maybe try putting some semi-raised beds up the hill where their waste will be. If you have a pond they will definitely prefer to be/poop in there, I have heard. Thankfully our pond is downhill, but it is right by our house and well, about 100 ft from it. Personally I don't see it as a major problem, we have goats and chickens pooping all over the place already and their poop gets washed into the pond, which is not stagnant. I like this couple's idea of the temporary moving ponds. I can't see a small amount being dumped in a different spot being a huge deal for you, unless you are getting a lot of ducks. In that case you may want to plan on the garden and a few small berms to keep the water contained in it.

@Darmok_onthe_ocean Жыл бұрын
They are VERY messy. Some people can’t handle it. They need water sources and it takes a lot more effort to be creative with that and keep it clean. They lay somewhat less than some chickens. And runner ducks can be very skittish. BUT. The cleaning doesn’t bother me. It’s more effort than a chicken but not much more. ESP considering most duck breeds are incredibly friendly sweet. @BetterTogetherLife6 ай бұрын
If you can look to see where the water is naturally running off, all you do is build a berm, or pile up dirt on contour in order to hold that water high enough to absorb into the earth. Some people might need to create by digging. But this way keeps the topsoil in tact and reduces disturbing the microbiology of the soil.
