With the drought we have been having these last couple years, the places where we put our sheep in the winter haven't produced the amount of feed that they usually do. This has forced us to find a different place to put one herd of sheep for the winter. With not very many options we ended up taking them to california where they spent the winter on hayfields. California is a long way away for us (12 hours in a truck) but, in drought years, we do what we have to do and try to make the best of it. Being part of the sheep and wool industry always has its ups and downs, Conditions change from being the worst winters on record, to the best we have had in a long time. With loads of snow now at home it takes a lot of preparation to receive these sheep back onto the ranch, from building and scraping new roads in the snow, keeping equipment running in the cold, and finalizing the preparations for lambing. Here in a few days these sheep are going to be having lambs, and starting our next stage of the year. Lambing!
