I often cared for cats badly injured or too unwell for their original owners to want back from the vets, but they were not in pain they needaed further treatment and care and would live a long life after accidents etc. Mine loved watching the foxes who came into my garden. The foxes used to run away if they thought the cat was getting too close and all would sit and look at each other. I love our wildlife, respect their need for food as we humans gobble up as many animals as we want and take their homes. Wish we were more like those who live in Singapore who design their cities to accommodate their very precious wild life as David Attenborough showed in 'Wild City'.

In Ireland it is a different story. Foxes are the A-Pex predator and will kill farm animals at will. They have even been known to kill and seriously injury cats. I will have to check out David Attenboroughs 'Wild City'

Nice footage, it's nice to watch them sometimes. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury where I am, too much forestry surrounding too many sheep farms.....
7 жыл бұрын
Gary Tree yea, that's exactly it. It's nice to see them about but we all know the untold damage that they can do. These foxes are not causing a big problem yet, but I know what will happen when the vixen teaches them to hunt.
@garytree77297 жыл бұрын
Antaine Ó Dufaigh You're right there. A lot of moorland too where I am, ground nesting birds etc, black grouse on one hill farm I do fox control on. A lot of people think it's all about annihilation but you'll never get them all, it is purely about control. I wish I had more time to watch, but I would have to go to ground where I don't have permission...!!

Gary Tree that's always the way. At least you are doing your bit for other animals in the area. Where these foxes are there is no Game or Pheasant shoots or nothing the only thing that they can take are usually farmyard chickens. You will diffinately not shot them all, that's for sure.

0.243 or 22-250 and a lamp . Vixen first then the cubs will come to the body . Problem solved

That would be too easy. In fairness in this particular spot they are not causing a Hugh problem. I have dealt with a few of them already. I prefer to call them in at first or last light. Love seeing them come into me during daylight hours.

Are foot traps legal there?
6 жыл бұрын
to be honest I don't actually know. if I was to guess I would say that they are illegal. most people either shot them, hunt them with dogs or snare them
@CGoffgrid6 жыл бұрын
Antaine Ó Dufaigh Shame. Hard to beat a 1.5 coil spring foot trap for foxes. As you can tell by my pic I been known to catch a few. 😉

I'm a farmer myself and have never lost a lamb to foxes..Beautiful animal.
7 жыл бұрын
Conor Dolan that's first class and I hope that it continues. Correct they are a very beautiful animal, but I'm afraid that they do take lambs and other farmyard animals. They probably don't take as many in areas where there is a large number of other wildlife such as rabbits etc but the do the lambs.

Pity farmers can't employ or be true shepherds to stop their loss of any 'lamb' to a fox. I know foxes like an easy 'kill' as they are pretty nervous if having to fight anything - and I know they take any lambs born dead. Maybe a shame that nowadays flocks are huge and can't be properly looked after - this happens in Australia who do a lot of intensive farming and rearing. Most animals today die horribly in abbatoirs and in live animal transport, sadly.

Its a very hard thing to control. The foxes tend to take advantage of the situation. A farmer can't be their at all times to protect his animals. They need to control the fox and the best thing is to reduce their numbers by shooting them.

In most parts of Australia, those foxes would have been shot at once. They represent a very damaging cause of large scale death to sheep and lambs,
6 жыл бұрын
Robert Cudlipp luckily in Ireland at the minute we haven’t got to that stage of a problem. In this situation they are not causing any problems.
@robertcudlipp34266 жыл бұрын
They are virtually a national pest causing countless A$millions in stock- mainly sheep losses. State Governments have been offering bounties on fox scalps for a decade now. Many farmers, quite legally, bait with 1080 poison, a very effective poison which very regrettably is indiscriminate in the animals it poisons. When our farming neighbours bait to protect their large , 20,000 + sheep and lambs, we soon know as there is an almost 100% reduction in birdlife , shades of Chernobyl almost.
6 жыл бұрын
Robert Cudlipp that’s unbelievable, how much of a bounty do they pay per fox?
@robertcudlipp34266 жыл бұрын
In Victoria, $10.00 a scalp, too low really; in the past, it has been as high as AU$50.00 per scalp. Wild dogs are also a huge pest, these are not to be confused with dingoes,who can quickly decimate sheep flocks. Some private landowners, more sheep farmers, but some with cattle, pay "doggers", professional dog trappers to control? the wild dog numbers on their land. Some State Governments do likewise. All of this should be relatively easy to locate simply using Google.
6 жыл бұрын
Robert Cudlipp yea, 10dollars is too low. I will have a look on google to see more about it
