Very interesting. This has never happened to me unless they are pregnant. Gonna be watching this. I did have one mare that got an infection in her teets, early in my learning process. The vet had to come out and basically milk her because it hurt her and I just couldn't do it myself. Wouldn't it be wonderful if she is pregnant? Lol a new journey raising a foal for you.

It could be a phantom pregnancy. I had that happen with two of my dogs at the same time. The vet was extremely confused by it. But they were both producing milk. The vet ended up doing an ultrasound and x-rays, free of charge because he had never seen two females, living in the same home, have phantom pregnancies at the same time. The phantom pregnancy would also explain the weight gain and imbalance 😊

My Husky developed that even tho she never had puppies. She let a baby kitten nurse, even.

You need to have her palpated by the vet. This far along no need for blood test unless checking her health. Ultrasound can check development, but it is used mostly early in the first month or so. The Your gonna be able to clearly feel the baby cause it is 8 plus months. I dont think she is in foal. She is just not big enough. Yes, they dont have to get big and can hide it in maiden mares. If she is in foal you have to check your fields for fescue. She has got to come off that field if you do. Fecue is toxic to pregnant mares. If she is she will need a few shots due by a certian time. Load her up and take her to the vet.

Here’s a weird animal story for you. I had a dog that picked up an abandoned kitten from the ditch and brought it home. She raised it. She had never had puppies before, but she started lactating and she nursed that kitten to adulthood. They remained best buddies for life.

I had a Doberman that found 3 kittens that were abandoned or mom might have been hit by a car. But I started bottle feeding them,one night I heard sucking sounds from the kittens that were sleeping with her. So I checked and sure enough she had milk and they were nursing. She never had puppies either 😊 but those 3 were her babies. Nature has a way of doing things we never thought possible.

Normally mares are in season every 21 days between April and September, so if she was covered by a stallion in September the latest she would have it is August, not that far off 8 weeks at most. Very often maiden mares do not show a lot until the last 4 weeks, and then they get round and heavy, and before birth the part above the tail either side softens to touch noticably

I was thinking the same. My uncles horse did this same thing after a momma lost her life during the birth and mommas sister took over and nursed the baby and she had not had a baby and had never been pregnant. Crazy what animals can do. It is a great thing!

Horses go into season, and they can produce milk when not pregnant. It’s possible she is doing this because Rita is still young, also the male donkey testosterone that was at J&L ranch may have released a pheromone into the air. It can happen when they aren’t pregnant.

Could be a false pregnancy, but her belly is lower and a bit rounder than it has been. A maiden mare does not always "show" as much. The blood test will tell, if positive then you could have an ultrasound done to get a guesstimate on how far along and approx. due date. If not, are you giving her a reg u mate supplement?

Wow, that is definitely something you'll get checked. On bonus with doing bloodwork, is other tests can be performed. If not preggo, can do tests to help figure out what's going on, if preggo, can make sure things are going well (any deficiencies). Bloodwork is a great thing at this point. but honestly Jami, wouldn't it be soooooo cute for you to have a baby Reign or Rain or Cloud/Cloudy to go with Storm? And Storm is such a beautiful mare, so striking in colors. Yes Rita is gorgeous and the boys are wonderful, but a baby/foal? Would be so wonderful. Hugs and I hope for healthy horse/s. My mom's mare has a false pregnancy every now and then. Raspberry leaves dried and sprinkled on her oats or pellets. She is a 16 year old now and is healthy. Some just want to be moms more than orhers

I was thinking the same thing. Rita has come a long way, but she still wants to dominate animals smaller than herself. And that leads to possible problems between her and Stormy. Storm will protect her little one, and knowing Rita the wild child, that has the potential to lead to true fights, during which the baby might be caught between them. As much as I would love to see Stormy's offspring, at this point, I'm kind of hoping the folks saying it could be a phantom pregnancy are right.

If she's not pregnant, she could possibly be having a false pregnancy (I think that's what it's called) to where she's wanting to have one and her body is having the symptoms but she's not pregnant. If that's the case then like you said it's a hormonal thing. Which can be helped with medication.
