WE have changed our minds with the help from some friends we changed the roof to white and then decided to back track and paint the entire boat a gloss grey. The boys make good progress on the inside building on from the previous week with all the timber joists so it has been prepped for floor boards. We enjoy a bbq / Braai and enjoy some spring air, the dogs have a blast at the canal, generally just a good day out.

There are now special paints coming onto the market that can reflect heat when hot and absorb heat when it's cold...ones called chameleon paint ..I believe it's french in origin.

Al Silver grey can reflect heat but avoids the worst glare. Also fits with the Zeppelin workboat aesthetics . Slate blue or green grey for the sides... Mix it well and in a constant proportions .

Interestingly, darker colors also release heat faster than lighter ones. So white, once it heats up, stays hot longer.

Whatever the heat gain through the hull the biggest problem with all steel hulls is the condensation corrosion that develops inside.. spray foam unless it's sealed cell and expensive as well as toxic .. just causes horrible problems. So when they come to that part of the build I suggest they do some careful research and insulate above and below the water line thoroughly, using non flammable none mould or bacterial supporting materials. They need to ideally deal with conducted heat and radiant heat...so something like Basalt ..rock wool matting and a reflective layer ..under the trim and panels. Supporting metal frames act as thermal bridges and need tackling as they condensate in winter and rust quickly.

I always think its a good ideal to let young children use circular saws perhaps a chain saw next time?
@dwansbo
@dwansbo 5 ай бұрын
Maybe an angle grinder? It surprises me how many people on U Tube use them without the guard. Like a circular saw they can kick like a mule. The lad could hardly lift the saw, he would never hold it, if, say there was a nail in the timber.

Important safety advice. I saw the young kid wearing gloves. Never wear gloves when operating power tools. Even if they are cut resistant gloves, if they get caught in the blade, they can wrap around it and stick limbs into that blade. Very dangerous.

No!! A child of this age should not even be holding the power tool like this one.! THIS IS POSSIBLY A CRIMINAL OFFENCE IN THE UK . Allowing a child to hold a power tool in this way is UNBELIEVABLE!! .. And totally irresponsible. I was cringing watching this part !!
@Kami8705
@Kami8705 5 ай бұрын
Kids under proper supervision can absolutely use power tools. He had an adult with him and even holding onto the saw. As far as gloves, I disagree entirely. The gloves will protect your hand from flying pieces of wood. Hands should never be close enough to a spinning blade that they can get caught. No glove is going to stop a saw like that without at least some injury. The no glove argument makes more sense for things like a bench grinder where you are holding pieces close to the wheel. Unfortunately people try to apply it to everything.

Nice project! 👍 I also like the gloss gray color better. But white has one advantage over a dark color: the roof gets less hot in summer. I don't know what you plan to do with the roof, but if you want to use it as a chillout deck or something similar, white might have been the better choice for the roof 😉

Junk, absolute junk. Until NOW!! Looks great!! I did NOT see this coming from day one, or whenever I subscribed. But, white hides imperfections, dark magnifies. Gloss makes them visible, matte hides them. Maybe dark is better to absorb heat, on the few days you get i there, I mean that big yellow thing up there.

You need to sort out the aperture on your camera. It's too open and causing a lot of over-exposure, particularly of the outside shots. They're looking like an early 80's pop video! 😁 Although, the second part of the video does look better. That, 'battleship grey', paint will help a bit.

Nice work Chris and Priscilla, the boat looks SO much better than when you first bought it! Being in Florida, white is the only color I would have considered due to the regular sunshine and high year round temperatures. In the UK, the gray should work nicely. It's nice you were blessed with a sunny day. On the floor joists, I would have used pressure treated timbre but, I don't know if it is available in the UK. It's nice you had some (I am assuming) family help. Thanks for another interesting video, I always look forward to them. I hope the boat becomes what you are envisioning.

If the joists are not yet fastened in place, you might consider putting a material between the steel and the wood that would prevent the wood from rotting. A rubber or plastic spacer that would let moisture drain away from the wood could increase the life of the framing. Also, take a look at homemade track saw guides before you start cutting sheet goods. Peter Millard has some excellent video on MFT tables for cutting sheet goods.

When you're through with painting everything the walking deck. What I would do is if you throw a little bit of the paint sand in there you can paint that walking deck? With that paint stand it'll leave a little grip for you to walk on. So it won't be slick when you're out there in this raining or something
