As someone who lives on a farm with a well, I can suggest a few things in case you might overlook them. Set 4x4 posts wherever you have uprights and attach your faucets to the post. Where you have cattle, you might need 2 posts as cows are notorious for scratching their necks and busting them. Also, if you can I would suggest getting a holding tank near your house. When power goes out, you can gravity feed from your tanks. Plus it’s easier on your well if you are pumping water with a float to keep it full.

He is correct about the mounds! We have owned big property like yours for 30 years and have done 1 major well dig. And just did a septic system replacement in 2021. We let it settle for a year and then moved and pushed it down the rest of the way! Best practice if you are able to wait the time. It ensures you don’t crush the pipes!

I think it’s best for the pipes underneath if the dirt above naturally settles, because you don’t want to accidentally collapse the pipes by putting too much pressure on it.

If you're going to do a drip irrigation for the greenhouse get a zone controller that is double the amount of zones you have so you can program the empty zones as a rest period For your well so for example 15 minutes on for your first zone then 15 minutes on for the empty zone then 15 minutes on for the next zone then 15 minutes for your empty zone so you're well has 15 minutes to partially recover in between waterings
@waylonhartwell

And not sure if the pond valve has a backflow preventer but when you hook it up you may want to put in a check valve inside the pond to prevent water from flowing backwards into the plumbing if the power goes out in the valve is open and water is used elsewhere on the property lowering the pressure then contaminating the system with contaminated water

I haven't watched the video yet but, okay wow that means I've been watching y'all for well over 4 years, sorry I just heard the 3.5 year since house buying celebration back to what I was saying 😆 It'll be sooo exciting to see the aviary working and full of birds!! Okay I'll be quiet and watch the show 👍😆 My husband does dirt work and said yes let it settle. You'll likely be amazed by how much settling it will do and of course rain and snow will change how much settling actually occurs. Give it some time and let earth do what earth does 😁 Second Edit: Maybe some fish or Koi to help keep the pond clean? I can hear the relief in your voice Jake, will y'all use solar to power the well pump? So exciting for y'all, such a blessing 💜

The company is correct. If you think about it digging up this soil is no different from aerating soil in a garden, eventually it will sink in on itself and letting it do so naturally means it will fill up any little air pockets and become compact so that the pipes aren't sitting on top off empty space that may eventually make them cave in on themself. Doing this all manually also risks damaging the pipes unless you have someone packing it all in by hand (and the last little bit would still need to sit for a bit to get rid off micro air pockets) overall it's better, and easier for you, too have too much that you can just smooth out later than having random dips where it's sunk in on itself.

Having water is amazing. I understand your excitement and stress levels. We recently did the same on our 80 acre farm. Luckily we had a very old hand dug 25' well on our property so drilling for a well we felt confident about. The mounds will settle over time but our well guy had a "pressure wheel" not sure the real name but it was like a metal wheel that compacted the soil. he ran when backfilling the hole in stages. We had only a couple of spots we had to grade back to level. We don't have a deep frost line here so our water line is about 3' deep and our well guy did the trench and didn't want to go more than 2 feet but we wanted it deeper so we don't break it where we plan to garden sometime in the future. Our well contains lots of iron, we don't filter it for our animals but do for our home. One regret was wishing I ran a tracer wire so I can locate the pipe in the future. If you have electrical with it you are in good shape as it's locatable. Yes it sure was expensive. What I did not know was we had to have a permit from our Water Dept, we paid for one from the County permit office and when the water dept found out we had a well they threatened to cut our water off. That was frustrating but after they explained why i completely understand. It's all behind us know and it's a wonderful blessing to have

That's so great, to finally have water running everywhere. And power! The amount of work and energy you guys continue to put into your property is amazing. You mentioned getting the water tested, which is good. But might be good to have it tested sooner than later. Not just for bacteria, but also for metals like arsenic (which are common and naturally occurring in Missouri, and can get into well water). If you have animals drinking it and you're using it on crops, might be a good thing, if you haven't already. Arsenic and other stuff can get into milk if cows drink arsenic-contaminated water, and arsenic poisoning can lead to all kinds of bad stuff.

I agree with the comment about adding wetland and bog plants to your pond to help filter it. And I would put in an airation pump to slowly airate and move the water. It helps break down the nitrogen, keeping the moss level down and having moving water in the winter will keep it from freezing over. We used a septic tank pump and it works great. I only have seasonal ducks, but ponds in general stink and it keeps the smell down. Good luck 😀

Could you have the slow release valve open 24/7 to the pond, then add another at the same rate on on the drainage pipe so water is constantly flowing in the pond so it doesn’t go stagnant? It would also be useful for filtration keeping the water cleaner when the waterfowl are in the aviary.

If the pond floor is slanted towards the drainpipe, only the silt at the bottom of the pond would need to be drained, not the entire volume of the pond. So draining a little every night after the ducks retire for the night should keep the pond relatively clean. By the way, that silt that drains from the pond is an excellent fertilizer and shouldn't be wasted. Water plants are also another way of keeping the water quality up. If you have duckweed, it will keep the water clean and will also feed the ducks. Have a reservoir of water higher than your pond water level. Then you can keep a culture of whatever water plant you choose that can be drained down tot he pond, just by opening a valve. Just some ideas.

That iron heavy water you have is fine for drinking, but you'll need a filter if you plan on using it to wash clothes, or run to the house, etc... And, of course, a filter for flavor might work. A berkey in your greenhouse would be a nice addition so you could get something to drink when you get thirsty out there.
